UPDATED: Toyota Fortuner, Hilux to Get Engine Upgrade Soon?

The biggest complaint when the revised Toyota Hilux and Fortuner came out was that the 2.5-liter 4-cylinder turbo models (2.5 G) was still rocking the old 102 horsepower engine. This certainly pales in comparison to its chief rivals from Mitsubishi.

Well, all that's about to change.

There are now whispers in the grapevine that Toyota Motor Philippines will finally launch the 2.5-liter variable nozzle turbo for service in the Hilux and Fortuner. This revised engine finally bumps up the power from the current 102 horsepower to 144 horsepower. Though it's still a good 20 horsepower short of the 3.0 D-4D (163 horsepower), the torque is now dead even between the two engines at 343 Nm. Though peak torque differs with the 2.5-liter reaching it between 1,600 to 2,800 rpm while the 3.0-liter does it between 1,400 to 3,200 rpm.

All indications point towards a possible release during the CAMPI Motor Show alongside the Toyota 86 Aero. There are no word if there will be an increase in price. Find out in a month's time whether or not this revised engine does make it underneath the hoods of the Hilux and Fortuner.

UPDATE: Although the upgraded Fortuner and Hilux didn't make it in time for the CAMPI Motor Show, Toyota is showcasing both of these two new models with a media event on September 11-12. Also, based on teaser ads in newspapers, the Fortuner model will also get a new built-in GPS navigation system.

  1. Sana Po Matuloy po Toyota's 2.5 D-4D with VNT so Mabilis po Magpatakbo ng Toyota Fortuner at Toyota Hilux. :)

  2. Wrong, the biggest complaint about the Fortuner is that it has become as common as a Taxi Vios or a riced-out Altis. Why people think that a huge, heavy, hard-riding, hard-to-maneuver, hard-to-park, un-nimble, tipover-prone (because its height is more than its width) Innova on stilts is appropriate for Phil. roads is beyond me.

    1. Only a fraction of the population are car enthusiasts, most rely on the brand their dad trusted etc.

Back in the 80's and early 90's there wasn't much to choose from. Toyota was then probably the best choice if you wanted something affordable, reliable and cheap to maintain.
That is no longer the case, others have cought up and in some cases have probably even overtaken them.

In any comparison test done by people who know cars, Toyota is no longer on the top, what keeps them on top is the image/ brand loyalty they built during better times, similar case with Honda.

Honestly, the only Toyota model I would take now in the current local lineup is the Toyota 86.

    2. Agreed. Same thing with Honda. They are still on top in terms of sales even in the US even though their current line-up all look odd (Jazz), downright ugly (Civic & CR-V) or just plain boring (Accord, City). Add to that the downgrade in specs and materials used and no progress in terms of technology (still 5-speed AT and '80s-tech like VTEC), and it's a huge wonder why people still keep buying them. "Prestigious" daw when it's as common as Toyotas even in the US, "better build quality" daw when they still offer only a mere 3-yr warranty when their Korean competitors offer 5-year warranties (10 years in the US).

    3. you don't have a fortuner, right? the only complain I can tag on it is being underpowered. I will replace it with nothing but the VNT when it comes.

    4. The steering wheel of a a 2012 Hyundai Accent of a friend of mine locked while cruising due to EPS failure, A friend of my mom experienced Montero's sudden acceleration, My ninong endlessly complaining on quality of Ford, My dad complaining on our Civic's expensive maintenance... and my own wonderful, hassle free and worrisome experience with my old 2001 Toyota Corolla...Well, just enougg logical, practical and wise reasons for me (even though how boring, bland, underpowered, etc. Toyota is) to stick with Toyota.:)

  3. it is NOT underpowered. you people just can't have enough with it. never satisfied with what you have. who needs speed anyway with speed limit posted on roads, we are not on race tracks. trust me, if VNT does give more HP to fortuner or hilux compared to montero and strada, people would say montero and strada is underpowered. come on.

  4. look people, if you really want to have stronger and faster toyota fortuner, buy the gas variant, and if you will say, gasoline is not affordable for your tank..? please, you don't have the right to say that because this car is a worth a million which you can afford compare on purchasing petrol worth hundreds or thousands only.. right..? diesel sucks..!

  9. Mitsubishi Montero GLS V still has a lot of value for money compared to Fortuner GL. Montero is better equipped with new gadgets and safety features (paddle shift, DVD headunit with GPS and multi info display, Steering wheel audio controls and Cruise control), safety features such as ABS-EBD and 4wheel disc brakes. Something you won't find in the base model unit Fortuner and the ride in the Montero is far better, actually closer to our Toyota Prado unit. We used to own a 2.5G diesel Toyota Innova with the same engine as the Fortuner GL and trust me on this, the VNT does make a lot of difference in the power department. The Innova was really under powered.
