Review: 2016 Mitsubishi Montero Sport GLS Premium

Mid-sized SUVs are a necessary evil in the Philippines. Not only do they provide enough space to ferry the entire clan, but they provide the water wading capability so necessary for flood-prone streets. Yet, there are some who cannot accept them for their lack of driving dynamics and refinement. Enthusiasts were beginning to dismiss them until the all-new Mitsubishi Montero Sport arrived. Categorically, this is the best mid-sized SUV out there.

If you’re used to driving a compact crossover for decades, it’s surprising how little adjustment is needed to pilot the Montero Sport. Indeed, Mitsubishi engineers have aced their homework the moment you climb aboard. The step-in height isn’t too high per se, but consideration must be practiced as not to soil pant legs on the protruding side step boards. Thankfully, the pillar-mounted grab handles make ingress much easier.

Settling in, the front seats are easily the best among the new PPVs (Pickup-based Passenger Vehicles)—comfortable, supportive, and feel like they’ve been lifted straight off a sports sedan. Those in the second row will the same way; but those in the last row will feel tight. Yes, accommodating two adults back there is possible, but they must be willing to get cozy with their knees slightly bent up. The headroom is also lacking for its size, but if you prefer to sit low (or is vertically challenged), then that shouldn’t be a problem. And if you don’t have a basketball team for a family, dropping the third row gives a flat, cavernous cargo room.

More than just the seats, the designers have also hit a homerun with the cabin. There are a lot of stalks, switches, and buttons straight from the Mitsubishi parts bin, but they’ve been laid out in a very easy to understand, very easy to operate manner. The fit and finish are top-notch with the aluminum and piano black accents creating a sporty feel. The gauges, lit in high-contrast LED with a multi-info center display, are legible while the touchscreen infotainment system features crisp graphics. The only glaring thing missing is the cubby holes. Despite being fitted with a lockable glove box and deep center bin, there’s nowhere to put things like mobile phones and other stuff. Worse yet, even your iPod will have to dangle in full view when you plug it into the USB port located just above the shifter.

In terms of styling, there’s little doubt that the Montero Sport’s a head turner. Though not everyone is being won over with the new design, the whole Dynamic Shield concept has elevated this mid-sized SUV above its peers. It definitely has design cred—looking like it came from the future, mixing a strong high-tech vibe with rugged cues. The rear is perhaps the most controversial part, but it’s been done for practicality: the drooping tail lights and cut-off rear bumper do make for the biggest and lowest tailgate opening in its class.

On the business end, the Monty has an all-new 2.4-liter MIVEC clean diesel engine. It’s a common engine shared with all variants of the 2016 Montero Sport and it’s easily one of the best powerplants in the PPV segment. It’s quiet at idle with minimal clatter. Also, it doesn’t get much louder as the speeds go up, making conversations between passengers easy even at high speed. Apart from refinement, there’s good pull too. Initially, it feels sluggish because pushing 1,935 kilograms of mass can be difficult, but once it gets going, the power is there. The engagement isn’t linear, so keeping the throttle feathered and the revs in the sweet spot, is a must for optimal operation. The best practice is to apply around 70 to 80 percent throttle to rocket off smoothly; anything more feels a bit jerky. Thankfully, the 8-speed automatic is a willing ally, shifting up and down quickly, keeping the engine singing happily. You can even flick gears yourself with the steering wheel paddle shifters. In terms of fuel economy, this GLS Premium 2WD does 9.90km/L in a mixed setting (7.57 km/L city, 14.92 km/L highway).

Compared to the rest, the Montero Sport has the best ride and handling. With thicker front sway bars, rear suspension lateral mounts, and improved geometry, it glides through potholes whether it has 2 or 6 occupants. It doesn’t get upset by small and undulating ruts while also absorbing sharper and larger obstacles better. The solid body structure also contributes to improved comfort and quietness. The only complaint is the constant shuddering from the second row if it’s unoccupied. In tighter confines, the quicker steering ratio and reduced turns lock-to-lock lend good maneuverability. Together with the large side mirrors and large glass area, it’s as easy to drive as a compact crossover. The four-wheel disc brakes (with larger two-piston ventilated up front) bite excellently with good feel and modulation.

It’s only at high speeds where the ladder-on-frame chassis limitations are felt. Though the ride remains polished, wind noise from the mirrors start to enter the cabin. The steering numbs and lightens up too, reducing high speed driving confidence. Nonetheless, it’s still way better than any PPV when it comes to conquering straight patches of road. Furthermore, it handles corners and curves tidily with controlled body movements and surprisingly responsive steering.

Considering how mid-sized SUVs have now jumped up in pricing, the Montero Sport manages to balance the value-for-money equation very well. Priced at P 1,685,000, this GLS Premium comes loaded not just with the usual dual SRS airbags, anti-lock brakes with EBD, brake assist, and rear parking sensors; but you also get four additional airbags, Mitsubishi’s Active Stability and Traction Control (M-ASTC), and trailer stability assist. And that’s on top of the LED headlights and tail lights, 18-inch alloy wheels, dual zone climate control, passive keyless entry, leather seats, and many more. By far, your peso goes the farthest here.

People have varying and sometimes personal reasons for choosing a particular PPV over another. And it’s based on these criteria whether or not the Montero Sport fits your lifestyle. With the only nays being the smaller than average interior and lack of storage space, it stands out as a great SUV because it’s easily the most refined and polished out there. The 2016 Montero Sport proves that mid-sized SUVs need not be necessary evils anymore; it becomes the well-informed choice.

  1. Is this better than the Toyota Fortuner 4x2 V and the Ford Everest 4x2 titanium?

    1. It's not perfect, but it's definitely better than the Fortuner or Everest. Remember though, I did indicate certain criteria such as easy to drive, soft riding, etc.

    2. Ok, thanks for your insights.

    3. Ford Everest is the best. It has the most electronic aids and toys(power tailgate, power 3rd row seats, power passenger seat, adaptive cruise control, lane keeping aid, pre-collision warning, panoramic roof, blind spot, cross traffic aid, can't name them all). The riding comfort is the best, it is the most quiet due to Active Noise Cancellation. It has a good suspension too, bumps and potholes are filtered very well(feels like nothing when inside). The steering is very light(easy to maneuver in tight spaces) and firms according to the increased speed. Another important thing, japanese cars have very thin metal compared to american cars. Try to swing the door of montero, then swing the door of everest. There will be a very big difference on the weight. Strong and thicker metal, safer!

    4. Oh yah, i missed something. You don't wanna move a heavy steering wheel on traffic. (causes muscle pain )

    7. Depends on what do you consider in owning an SUV. If you're the mister gadget type of guy get something that even has a kitchen in it.

    8. Un Ford everest maganda ang design pero mahirap ang parts at mahal. Kahit mga kano ayaw ng Ford. Ok ang Ford sa mga pick up trucks. Kahit magtanong ka sa mga taga US na marunong sa sasakyan. Wag daw Ford sirain.

      Delete
    9. di mo talga alam, best talga ang everest. eh yung parts di nmn palgi sumisira. yung parts dipende sayo kung minamahal and tinitiis nyo. tsaka may mga tao sabi nila na baba daw resale value ng ford, eh bakit magbibili ng kotse

    10. It is a misconception to think that heavier metal translates to safer driving. Check the Internet on collision safety and related stuff. Google is your friend.

      Delete
    11. We had put everest into our options. Pero we were warned by a friend whom his boss owns one (sirain factor sorry, but I'm a fan of the Ranger).
And yeah I agree about the door^. Heavier doesn't mean safer. The new montero has remodeled it to being compact and lighter but not risking the safety.
All of those what you said features are also with the new Montero (except for the power seats on 2nd and 3rd row not sure).
The space yeah, that goes to the Everest.
For a price of 1.6M you wont get a package as good as Montero than the Everest. Why I know? We had gone thorough canvassing. Except for the Fortuner which released their new one after we decided what to buy.

  2. The exterior is lacking in my opinion, maybe augmenting it with accessories would make it look better.

  3. I have grown to like the back but the front is still hideous. The bulbous cheeks, the chrome bigote is just ugly.

  4. Which has the best 3rd row seats?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Everest, power folding pa. For fortuner.3rd row seats are outsated. They are flipped to the side,no fold flat. EVEREST has the largest space for 3rd row, you can even adjust the 2nd row seats, to give 3rd row more room

      Delete
    2. Everest would have lots of gimmicky features like power folding seats. But at the end of the day, their 3rd row seats are as cramped as any other mid-sized suvs available in the market.

      Delete
    3. Still the everest has the most space thats an advantage over the montero. Plus the 2nd row of the everest slides to accommodate more knee and leg room on the 3rd row which in the montero the 2nd row is fixed, making the 3rd row cramped forever. The everest also has more head room.

And i wouldnt say the power folding seats are gimmicky. Try owning one with power folding seats and youd say its cool!

      Delete
    4. Baka wala ka pang Everest, tignan mo un tapakan ng 3rd row seat ng Everest may naka umbok. Mangangawit ang paa mo.

      Delete
    5. EVEREST could be nice... but the PRICE TAG is so damaging with auto fold seats for 3rd row and others....
(Everest 3rd row doesn't recline. SIT STRAIGHT UP like MILITARY's SITTED ATTENTION POSTURE LOL

SO overall panalo si New MONTY. The car reviews from AUSTRALIA and MIDDLE EAST to NORTHERN EUROPE countries shows more specifics on why MONTERO beats FORTUNER and even EVEREST.

      Delete
  5. ^The rear door is bland. They thought the rear light configuration can compensate for this lack of imagination. But the front end looks innovative although it might not appeal to some...

    ReplyDelete
  6. The best PPV in the market right now. The new fortuner lacks toys and still rides hard in most cases not to mention the price disadvantage. The everest on the other hand felt clumsy because of the super light steering and the questionable reliability of the electronics. If only the chevy trail blazer felt better built then it might stood a chance with the handsome facelift due soon.

  13. Everest is really the best, can't deny it. It competes with the Prado in other countries.3 cars have their unique style,so it depends on taste. For the interior' Everest is the best with luxurious leather on the dashboard and there is also ambient light(7colors,lights all around inside the car). Montero and fortuner have a very very stong leather scent.Leather really has a greater quality in the Everest. Many fake wood inserts in the fortuner, they will start to peel years later.

That being said, the built quality of the PH everest is not that far off with the built quality of the PH montero and PH fortuner.

Montero sport is the best MID SUV.
Your everest is like a pregnant woman almost 500kg more kerb weight the than MS.
Do simple math and physics definitely can't go wrong w/ the MS 2016.
Everest has to much power in paper but actually isn't the case.

    1. Nope.Nope.Nope. EVEREST's curb weight is about 1000kg or more(for the 3.2, don't know for 2.2). It will be more stable if its heavier, light cars can roll. EVEREST is 3.2l engine which gives 200ps, it is tdci and will even give more than 200ps. Suggest everyone to test drive montero and EVEREST, you will know that the montero is really underpowered.

      Delete
    2. ^Your data is false, the Mazda 2 R variant has a weight of 1042kg, and that's already a very light car. Check your data again. The Everest is really heavy by around 500kg, so the additional power is restrained by the heavier weight. From my experience with my Mazda 2, despite being a light car, it doesn't have much bodyroll. Anyway, the montero is not underpowered, it is modestly powered.

    4. BURNED! hahaha.
Well, anyway. Heavier does not translate it to being more stable. To the guy that loves his Everest so much, let me say this: It's ok to love and be loyal to it, but you don't have to make others love it the way you do. Also, it seems that you don't actually own an Everest - all you did was to quote spec sheets and nothing more.

    1. How is the MS the best suv? By being the smallest and having a tighter interior space than the competition? It almost feels like a sedan or a small mpv. For power, even the 2.2 everest is enough for most people and you wont use it for racing anyway. Torque is what you need for these kind of cars. Ground clearance and wading depth also important sa floody areas in the ph and the everest wins that. Plus the styling, kulang nalang maglagay sa loob ng montero ng coffin cause it looks like a sporty funeral car LOL! Overall the everest has a more premium feel and has all the package for a right SUV. not the montero "volvo funeral car wannabe"

  19. I like the design of the everest more cause its simple and clean unlike the fort and mont which basically is in the level of too futuristic which is not my taste. I like the performance of the 3 new suvs, but I would have to go to the simple and clean design of the everest.

  24. Here's the performance data of Fortuner 2.8 liter diesel and Montero Sport 2.4 liter Mivec diesel engine tested by "Performance drive.Au" in Australia using the Racelogic VBOX Sports timing tool.
    Fortuner 2.8 liter diesel
    0 - 100km at 12.49 sec
    1/4 mile at 18.59sec at 121km/hr
    Braking 100km - 0 at 3.43 sec and will take 44.53 mtrs
Engine Noise at idle 54.6db, and 88.2db at full throttle 60km to 100km

Montero Sport ( Pajero Sport in Au )
    0 - 100km at 11.29 sec ( Faster )
    1/4 mile at 17.9sec at 125.9km/hr ( Faster )
Braking 100km - 0 at 3.29 sec and will take 40.27 mtrs (quicker and shorter)
Engine Noise at idle 52db, 84db at full throttle 60km to 100km/hr

The higher 2.8 liter Fortuner cannot even compete with heavy 2.4 liter 4x4 Montero sport, how can a smaller and weaker Fortuner 2.4 liter 4x2 G and V variant compete with same 2.4 liter Mivec engine carrying a lighter weight 4x2 Gls Premium variant. Definitely Fortuner will eat Montero's dust. Pity on Fortuner G variant who's interior center Aircon outlet looks like a Mitsubishi Fb. Priced at P1476k but you cannot even get an Automatic Climate control, no Push Start/stop button, has no "Smart keyless entry" ( but it has a "non-keyless stupid entry" :) ). No reverse camera and not even reverse sensor. By the way those features i'm telling you are available on smaller, cheaper budget car like the Honda City, the small Ford Ecosport and even the 700k peso priced Mitsubishi Mirage. Pity on those who spent almost 1.5M hard earned peso and yet cannot even enjoy the luxury and beauty and joy of 2016 technology. One more, parallel parking with car behind is like a nightmare to Fortuner G

    1. Thanks for writing.

There are some probable causes of black smoke coming from the tail pipe. The chief among them is the use of dirty fuel.

Although we are supposed to be Euro 4 now, I understand that some provincial stations (usually smaller players) still haven't shifted to Euro 4 standard. That could be a culprit. In fact, it's not recommended to run Euro 2 fuel in a vehicle designed for Euro 4.

In my time with the Montero Sport, I didn't notice any substantial black smoke coming from the tailpipe... But you're right in pointing out that there are some units puffing black smoke (only slightly) when driven hard. Even the SsangYong vehicles we drove emitted black smoke.

Until such time our fuels, even smaller players, completely shift to Euro 4 I think we'll still see some black some coming from even the newest cars.

    5. Will have a review of the Everest up soon too.

As for the fuel, in theory the big 3 is supposed to all offer Euro 4 gasoline. The hard reality of franchise station is that some times, they'll do short cuts to earn a bit more. This could mean mixing in different fuels, etc.

Petron penalized a handful of stations found guilty of this practice.

    6. Mausok kasi gamit nya paddle shift, hindi pa sanay gumamit. Kailangan ng ilipat ng gear at galit na un makina kaya mausok. Dapat D-drive nalang nag ginamit nya, hindi naman mausok

  26. i agree with you sir uly..if 4x2 variants, specs, and price ang paguusapan mas lamang ang Monty kaysa sa Fortuner and Everest..sulit pera mo sa 4x2 GLS Premium Variant 2.4L engine 181 BHP plus 8 speed AT..compared sa 4x2 ng Everest and Fort 2.2L and 2.4L respectively underpowered compared to Monty..plus yung ride and comfort ng Monty mas maganda compared to Fortuner and Everest..sa interior nmn d ngkakalayo ung tatlo..i'll go for Monty 4x2..just for me..

  27. That swooping center console that curves into the foot wells make for a tight fit. Otherwise, the new montero sport is a pretty good package.

  28. P1,355,000 nalang yata ngayon GLS. meaning mas mura narin sa original price ang premium.

  29. Ang pangit ng new montero specifically the rear. Ang sikip ng loob youll immediately feel claustrophobic pagsakay sa cabin lalo na dahil sa arm rest and center console. Headroom is also low. Width is narrow sa buong vehicle para ka lang nasa sedan. Interior is not the best. 2nd row seats hindi pwede slide to accommodate more knee and leg room sa 3rd row.

8 speed tranny just for economy. Truth is youll never get to the 8th gear on everyday use sa city. Its not underpowered, pero yung mga owners ng montero kala nila race car auto nila at nananaginip lagi na best ang montero sport nila among suvs.

Overall features and package goes to the everest titanium for me. Ford really did a great job sa new everest.

  30. Re: Black smoke, diesels will always emit some, how much depends on how rich the fuel mix the engine is running at the time. Normally we see it going rich in high load (going uphill/fully loaded/accelerating), high rpm while at low vehicle speed conditions. Even with Euro 5 fuel I've seen diesels in Italy emit black smoke. Richer fuel mix = more power & pollutants. More advanced engines can run much leaner while producing as much power as others, and emit less smoke & other emissions given the same conditions.

The last gen Monteros look like they run a really rich fuel mix compared to last gen Fortuners. Even brand new ones from the factory at cruising conditions had a bit of black smoke. With Mitsu claiming this is a "clean diesel" I hope they make good on their claims.

The only way to have absolutely no black smoke is to have a DPF.

    1. Wag kang matakot sa black smoke, ibig sabihin madumi lang ang tambutso mo or hindi ka pa ng change oil and fuel filter. Matakot ka sa white smoke kasi may sira ang makina mo. Tanong mo sa mga mekaniko.

  32. Ugliest suv imo. It looks like a narrow and tall van, that's made for funeral services. It's the smallest of the suvs, and has a claustrophobic interior. Suspension is too soft for off roading. Id rather buy the new fortuner.
