2017 Toyota 86 Races to Toyota Motor Philippines Showrooms (w/ Specs)

Toyota’s modern day legend, the Toyota 86, sees a timely refresh this year with the goal of delivering a more exhilarating drive on both road and track. Since its market launch of 2012, the Toyota 86 has been developed and engineered to deliver intuitive handling that embodies driving enjoyment. Four years on, it continues to deliver an innate sense of excitement that only the 86 can deliver.

“With a rich history born from other Toyota sports cars such as the 2000GT, Sports 800, and the AE86, the new 86 is a sports car that holds all its predecessors characteristics but with a compelling new style,” said Mr. Satoru Suzuki, President of Toyota Motor Philippines.

Today, in Toyota’s thrust of developing “ever-better cars”, the Toyota 86 takes an evolutionary step forward that incorporates many of the technological feedback from the compact rear-wheel drive sports car’s participation in various motorsports fields.

This starts with the revised styling that not only emphasizes the width but also improves the overall aerodynamic performance. The lower nose and horizontally expanded grille creates a sportier stance while new nose fins and canards built into the fog lamp housing improve the airflow around the car. At the side, the new 17-inch alloy rims with twisted spokes and finished in a two-tone machine-cut/gun-metallic look further accentuate the nimble-looking profile.

At night, the 2017 Toyota 86 is made more visually striking thanks to the lighting elements. The front features a full-LED lighting system (including the signal lights) while at the back, the rear combination lamps also utilize LEDs positioned in a horizontal manner for a smarter appearance.

Inside, the Toyota 86 continues with its driver-centric cockpit. This begins with a new steering with that incorporates controls for both the audio and multi-function display systems. At 362-mm, this new three-spoke wheel is the smallest ever fitted in a Toyota vehicle. The gauge cluster has also been modified. Not only does it incorporate a clever multi-function display (MID) that displays all sorts of nifty stuff including G force, power/torque curves, and a stop watch; but it’s been tweaked so that the red line (7,000 rpm) is located at the 12 o’clock position. Careful consideration has also been extended to the choice of interior materials. In the 2017 Toyota 86, the improved textures not only impart a more premium feel, but also reduce unwanted glare from the outside.

Though in-car entertainment should be primarily provided by mountain passes (and some impromptu drifting), the 2017 Toyota 86 does gain a new Kenwood multimedia system. The 7-inch touchscreen unit not only incorporates inputs such as CD/DVD/USB/Bluetooth, but it also boasts of a smartphone mirroring function via WiFi.

Under the hood, the Toyota 86 sees tweaks to improve its tractability. Although maximum performance figures remain the same (200 horsepower and 205 Nm of torque), changes to the intake and exhaust manifolds have led to the maximum torque being achieved at lower rpms. Furthermore, the torque spread has also been widened.

Known for its exhilarating handling, the 2017 Toyota 86 has improved suspension and increased body rigidity thanks to the increase in spot welds used, specifically in the rear pillar. Furthermore, front and rear vented disc brakes provide better stopping power than before.

The new Toyota 86 is now available at all dealerships nationwide in 7 stylish hues: Dark Gray Metallic, Pure Red, Crystal Black Silica, Ice Silver Metallic, Lapis Blue Pearl, Orange Metallic, and Crystal White Pearl. It’s available in just two variants: M/T (P 1,749,000) and A/T (P1,849,000). As always, the Crystal White Pearl commands a premium of P 15,000.

    2. Wala rin option na mag palagay? I mean kahit mag bayad kapa? Kasi sa AERO lang dati meron e. Although na hindi ko naman gagamitin pero maganda lang kasi tignan sa interior, kumpleto yung buttons.

  3. Isn't it that the manual is expected to gain an additional 5hp with a red aluminum cast intake manifold for the facelifted version?

    1. According to Toyota Motor Philippines, there's no power increase despite the change in intake and exhaust manifold design between M/T and A/T variants.

    2. But is the intake in the manual variant finished in red aluminum cast?

    3. From what we saw, nope. It doesn't have a tinge of red on the intake.

    4. Ohh...I was hoping they would give in the asditional 5hp for the facelift; just like what other countries like USA, Japan, and Australia will be getting.

    5. I think the broader torque curve, and lower rpm for peak torque are better improvements. 5 horsepower sounds like margin of error, if you know what I mean ;-)

    6. I get what you mean. Also, the new Grandlux soft touch materials used in doors and instrument panel, together with the 86 logo etched into the passenger-side dashboard, did these stuff make it to the new model?

    7. Sat in the passenger seat, it didn't look it. It's got leather and suede combination seats though. It didn't have the 86 embossed on the passenger side.

    8. Ohh, so looks like they didn't bring all the good stuff for the facelift here. And it also looks like it doesn't have reverse camera as well.

    10. Did they open the hood of the red and white 86? And did both cars have same plastic intake manifold cover?

    11. Same plastic intake manifold cover. Yes, they did open the hood on both cars. Even Toyota Motor Philippines personnel said it still has the same overall power and torque.

    1. Toyota and Subaru created this jointly. So technically this isn't solely from the efforts of toyota

    2. Toyota & fun aren't compatible - yes, because you only drive a vios.

    3. Nope, I drive a Mazda 3, mind you.

    1. That's even assuming Motor Image will bring in the refreshed BRZ. I understand the BRZ initially sold well, but tapered off quickly. If they were to bring the refreshed BRZ at the same price as well, they'll be able to leapfrog Toyota. But then again, I think they'll concentrate on the WRX instead.

    2. Are we getting the refreshed BRZ? Or is it already available in the market?

  6. I like the BRZ bumper. 86 looks so weird. but still awesome. I'm waiting for brz, sana hindi lumagpas sa 2M ang presyo.

  7. Will they ever put a goddam turbo on it?

    1. Subaru might do that with the BRZ but not Toyota. Like putting an FA20DIT on the BRZ platform giving it the same output as the WRX or detune it like on the Forester XT. Lexus can make a similar car and power it with a 2.0L turbo engine like on the IS200T.

  8. Did they change the fd 4.1 to 4.3?

    1. I think that comes hand in hand with the revised engine, so no.

The 86 we have does have a lot of revised suspension bits, but that's it.

  9. I know nobody cares about this but, lemme just ask if it's still have power retract side mirror?

  10. trd version 2017 is it possible in our country?
