The Jeep Renegade is probably the cheekiest car I’ve ever tested and it’s proof that Americans (with a little help from the Italians, of course) can make a car with more interesting design details than all the other competitors in its class put together. On paper, the Honda BR-V looks like a Frankenstein product: part Mobilio, part CR-V, part Jazz. It’s not supposed to make sense, but in reality it does. Honda perfectly knows that the small crossover segment is fast growing and they figured that the best way to capitalize on that popularity is to merge it with yet another strong segment in the industry: the 7-seater MPV. The end result is a 7-seater crossover that doesn’t really push the limits of imagination, but still manages to live up to expectations.

To the average person, Nissan isn’t regarded as a sporty brand. Outside the sub-culture of drifters, where Sylvias and Cefiros perform excellently, the lack of souped-up Sentras or Teanas plying the streets of Manila create a misconception that Nissan doesn’t have a strong motorsports heritage (as if riced-up cars are sporty). When Michael, my Uber driver, noticed where I was heading, he started his small talk with: how do you pronounce “Peugeot”? Eager to impart a bit of automotive trivia, I told him the proper way to say it: “POO-zho” and that if he ever needs a refresher, every dealer has a pronunciation guide stickered on the façade. Then he asked: mura ba yun? Mukha kasi silang mura eh (are they cheap? It’s because they look cheap). At that point, I thought: Ouch! If I were working for Peugeot or owned one, that comment would feel like a knife piercing through my chest. Although I could try reiterating things like how they’re filled with quirky yet intricate details and that they’re made in France and so forth; I’m simply calling on Michael to try out the new 308, be it the hatchback or wagon. Discounting the budget 301 which I abhorred, this is the first mainstream car that lives up to Peugeot’s brand values.

It’s hard what to make of the 2016 Volkswagen Golf. Looking at it purely as a car, it’s pretty darn good: timeless looks, peerless build quality, peppy performance, respectable fuel economy—it is by and large, the whole compact car package. But put the window sticker on it—P 1,759,000—and the 1.4 TSI Highline isn’t looking like such a bargain anymore. The price pretty much limits the appeal of Volkswagen’s everyman car. And while Corolla or Civic buyers looking to upgrade won’t be lining up for a Golf any time soon, those willing enough to pay the premium will certainly be in for a treat.
