Of Fast Cars and Race Queens: 30 Images that Prove: Super GT is Awesome

Super GT is Japan’s premier touring car competition featuring heavily-modified production cars (for those designed to be commercially available). With an acronym that stands for “Grand Touring”, these high-performance automobiles are capable of both high-speed and long-distance driving. The cars lining up to compete in the top-class GT500 cars are from the Japanese “Big Three”: Nissan, Toyota, and Honda while domestic and overseas manufacturers go up against each other in the lower GT300 class.

Drawing over 400,000 spectators a year, Super GT has eight rounds and is primarily held in circuits in Japan: the Okayama International Circuit, Fuji Speedway in Shizuoka, Sportsland Sugo in Miyagi, Suzuki Circuit in Mie, and the Twin Ring Motegi in Tochigi. However, wanting to draw a more international audience, one round is held outside Japan and since 2014, the Chang International Circuit in Buriram, Thailand plays host. This year, it hosted Round 7.

With the exception of the hot and humid temperatures in Buriram, the organizers successfully replicated the sights and sounds of a full on Super GT race. The weekend is filled with fast cars, exciting racing, and of course, tons of race queens.
