2017 Chevrolet Spark Ups Small Car Ante (w/ Brochure)

They promised and they delivered. Chevrolet Philippines is now making the all-new 2017 Spark available at all of its authorized dealerships. Available in three variants, the all-new Spark promises to lead small cars in design, performance, technology, and safety.

Running on an all-new global platform, the 2017 Spark features a more mature aesthetics. It’s characterized by a lower roofline that removes the “tall car” look so prevalent in many small cars. Thinner pillars and more efficient packaging (the rear wheels are pushed out to the corners) contribute to a planted stance. The top-of-the-line LTZ has more cues that set it apart such as the larger alloy wheels (185/55 R 15s) and projector-type headlights with LED daytime running lights.

Inside, designers have matched that more mature appearance with upgraded materials and better attention to detail. For example, the seats boast higher density foam for improved comfort while higher quality fabrics, particularly for the LTZ up the premium feel more. And by lowering the roof height, the all-new Spark offers better hip-point dimensions for the seats lending a more ergonomic driving position. Surprisingly, the Spark only offers seating for 4 people (the middle rear seat has a console box). Though this limits its usefulness, at least 60/40 split-folding seats is standard.

The Spark uses Chevrolet’s MyLink infortainment system which features a 7-inch capacitive touchscreen, icon-based interface, and gesture controls. New volume controls and buttons enhance the overall intuitiveness while 6 speakers across the line give good aural quality. Other premium touches include a keyless entry system and all power convenience features.

All Spark models will run on the 1.4-liter Ecotec 4-cylinder engine. Shared with the Sonic hatchback, the Spark outs 99 horsepower at 6,200 rpm and 128 Nm of torque at 4,400 rpm. This Euro-4 engine is mated to a new CVT or Continuously Variable Transmission. The switch to EPS or Electric Power Steering makes it highly fuel efficient as well.

In terms of safety, the Spark doesn’t take any shortcuts. Dual SRS airbags, ISOFIX child seat anchors, and auto door locks are standard while the LTZ gets dynamic stability control and traction control as well.

The all-new 2017 Spark is available in 7 “interesting” colors: Black Meet Kettle, Brimstone, Mint My Mind, Pull Me Over Red, Son of a Gun Gray Metallic, Summit White, and Switchblade Silver. The 1.4 LT 5-speed M/T is priced at P 648,888 while the LT CVT goes for P 682,888. The 1.4 LTZ CVT caps the range at P 763,888.

  4. Can we replace the rear seat with no "console box"? I'm leaning to buy this instead of the Mirage or Wigo but that seat really annoys me.

  5. I am 6 ft tall and my son is 6ft 4in. Would we find this to be tough with driver settings because of our height?

    1. At your height? The Spark will probably end up as a two-seater.
