Volkswagen PHL Aims to Slay the Compact Car Competition with 2017 Jetta, Golf GTS

Volkswagen Philippines has begun preselling two new passenger car offerings: the 2017 Jetta and 2017 Golf GTS with retail sales beginning at the end of the month. The move comes as VW Philippines aims to continue its strong momentum after being crowned the best-selling European car brand last year.

Selling over 14 million units worldwide across 6 generations, the Philippines adds two additional variants to the Jetta: the Business Edition+ and Business Edition. This joins the current line-up of the Highline and Comfortline variants. “Made for Everyday Driving”, the 2017 Jetta has distinctive European looks, feature-packed amenities, and of course, the only one in the segment with a diesel motor.

Standard across all variants is a moon roof while opting for the Highline nets 17-inch Lancaster alloy wheels and front fog lights. Meanwhile, the Business Edition and Business Edition+ up it even further with HID headlights with adaptive front lighting and LED daytime running lights.

Inside, all 2017 Jettas gets a passive keyless entry system with push-button start/stop, a 5.8-inch touchscreen Color Display infotainment system with Bluetooth, and leather seats. The Highline, Business Edition, and Business Edition+ add even more niceties such as rain-sensing wipers, dual zone climate control, 6-way power adjustable driver’s seat, and an 8-speaker Fender sound system.

The Business Edition+ highlights Volkswagen’s commitment to safety and comes equipped with Adaptive Cruise Control, Blind Spot Alert with Lane Assist, and Front Braking Assist with Forward Collision Warning.

All Jetta models come powered by Volkswagen’s 2.0-liter TDI engine with 150 horsepower (from 3,500 to 4,200 rpm) and 340 Nm of torque (from 1,750 to 3,000 rpm). This diesel engine is mated to a 6-speed dual clutch automatic (DSG).

The 2017 Jetta is priced at P 1,100,000 for the Comfortline; P 1,200,000 for the Highline; P 1,250,000 for the Business Edition; and P 1,300,000 for the Business Edition+. It comes in the following colors: Black, Platinum Gray, Toffee Brown, Cardinal Red Metallic, Reflex Silver, Blue Silk, Pure White, and Moon Rock Silver.  Black interior is offered for all while beige interior is also available for the Business Edition+, Business Edition and Highline models.

Along with the Jetta, the Golf GTS will also be made available later this month. Standing for GTS or Grand Touring Sport, the Golf GTS is basically a wagon version of Volkswagen’s most popular model globally, the Golf.

Like the Jetta, the Golf GTS is powered by a 2.0-liter TDI engine with 150 horsepower and 340 Nm of torque. And like the Jetta, it delivers that power through the front wheels via a 6-speed DSG gearbox.

With only two variants, the Business Edition and Business Edition+, the Golf GTS comes loaded with the same features found on the higher variants of the Jetta: passive keyless entry with push-button start/stop, a 5.8-inch touchscreen Color Display infotainment system with Bluetooth, rain-sensing wipers, leather seats with power adjustment for the driver, and an 8-speaker Fender sound system.

As with the Jetta, the Golf GTS Business Edition+ gets a multitude of additional safety equipment such as: Adaptive Cruise Control, Blind Spot Alert with Lane Assist, and Front Braking Assist with Forward Collision Warning.

The Golf GTS Business Edition is priced at P 1,350,000 while the Business Edition+ tops out at P 1,400,000.

Volkswagen dealerships nationwide have begun accepting reservations for the 2017 Jetta and Golf GTS with units expected to be delivered by the end of May.

  1. This is great news! I formerly thought that Volkswagen PH are overpricing their cars. These new offerings seem fine for the specs/features and the price. Looking forward to seeing more Volkswagens on the road.

    1. And stocks are limited so might as well reserve now or you'll be sorry! All with reverse cam and moonroof [with tilt] plus VW's hallmark driving dynamics not to mention efficiency, definitely will slay any Asian branded competitor in the segment.

  2. Attractive pricing! Diesel engine + good features.

  3. The prices look great because its competitors skyrocketed in price as well. I'm not saying it's a bad deal but it does give you more options if you're in the market for a compact car segment.

  7. What is the rep for VW servicing in the PH? This is good news, still deciding between Levorg and Mazda 6...

    1. VW follows a 15k KM or 12-month PMS cycle for either gas or diesel engines. There is a free checkup in between PMS periods (every 7500 km or 6 months).

    2. Get the 6, it's much better than the Levorg.

  8. As a Honda fan boy, I was a bit skeptical about how the title says VW will "slay" the competition. After seeing how the Jetta and Golf GTS are priced, I'd say that title is totally apt.

  9. Saw the jetta comfortline in Sheridan, Mandaluyong very nice... premium feel inside and out comes with sunroof, leather seats, push-button start, and a 5.8in touchscreen with rear camera. The best of the jetta is diesel powered engine (EA288)tried to start it runs smoothly match with 6-speed dsg tranny... san kapa?... very reasonable price at 1,1M.

  10. Station wagons are rare in this country....so it's great to see a Golf Wagon as the first estate car of Volkswagen Philippines. I gotta see it =)

  11. Is the Golf GTS a car worth trading in my Opel Omega station wagon ? Opinions?

    1. I have never driven an Opel but rode on one. The VW Golf [GTS] Sportwagen is the better car without a doubt.

    2. If someone ever offered me 200k for it then I'd buy this in a heatbeat.

  12. I hope the VW distributor in PH just go for a low margin high volume strategy like they probably went in for these two, unless these are the piled up unsold stocks in the US because of dieselgate. Not that pinoys would mind, we're not there yet.

We only make do with the japanese, murricans, and korean brands in PH because the euros are priced way off. But if they are priced and specced like these two then yeah pinoys are in for a treat!

    1. Definitely a treat in every sense. I'm excited to see more of these cars on our roads.

  13. I do believe these units are the unsold ones due to the dieselgate scandal. But then again, these are priced competitively enough to challenge the Japanese and Korean carmakers.

The next question is, how's the maintenance of Volkswagen? The availability and price of spare parts? Does Volkswagen offer discounts similar to other carmakers?

    1. You're correct, those units came from the US and this are not the unsold units because of dieselgate scandal but rather US banned the used of VW diesel fed engine. Those Tdi's engine in the jetta's and golf's belongs to new engine family that is EA288 which are not equipt or installed with the so called "defeat devise". So were very lucky because we have the latest and most advance tdi engine available in the market through Vw in a reasonable pricing.

PM's is relatively cheap... there's no break-in period once the unit is release then next time your gonna visit the service center is on the 15k KM or 12-month ( which ever comes first) PMS cycle for both gas or diesel engines. There is a free checkup in between PMS periods (every 7500 km or 6 months).

    2. Do you guys think maglalabas din sila ng Manual nito? anyone who has any contact with VW PH? I don't mind losing the moonroof as well and perhaps some amenities, I just want a manual diesel for zoom zoom! The accent diesel engine is good but everything else on that car is sh!t

    3. Where were buyers like you when Volkswagen started selling the Jetta here?

Seriously though, you can try getting the Polo 1.6 TDI or the run out model of the Jetta if you want.

      Delete
    4. But is their polo notch/hatch diesel? I tried checking VW PH website but specs are scarce, and the brochure download just gives an error. Or is it because we already have Euro 4 diesel that they only start to offer TDI engine? I'm noob with VW as they're priced above my pay grade but this jetta changed the game for me.

    5. Guys im proud vw polo notch tdi owner since Nov.2015... looks like im the last batch to acquire the tdi powered polo notch during that time nagkaubusan nat pati un prefered kung color na black e naglahot nauwe sa metallic beidge na lamang ang available color pero ang mahalaga Tdi cya at manual.
looks like after the promo wala ng nilabas na polo notch Tdi but instead mga MPi powered engine ang natira up to this moment.
Guys dika magsisi sa performance very powerful engine, very stable even cornering at high speed, very responsive speed sensitive steering wheel at fuel efficient ng Tdi...imagine in long drive (80-120kph) walang patayan ng makina even during stop-over AC oN to no.2 with 5 adult + 1 todler passenger + luggage (SAn Pedro, laguna to Ilagan, Isabela)including rounds in the town registered 600kms. for the half of the fuel guage.. ng magpa gas ako 30liters...meaning an average of 20kms/liter ang na consumo ko super tipid!..this is actual measurement since polo tdi is not equipt with multi-screen info... so there you guys the car is very basic and bare inside but its really fun to drive... ang tanong kelan pa kaya maglalabas ule ng polo notch tdi?...

    6. A new batch of Polo TDI sedans might be coming in once all remaining 2015 & 2016 units are sold out. The remaining units are gas Polo HBs which are sourced from India.

  14. Note that these units do have the speedometers with both mph and kmh set guidelines. Odd in a Philippine setting though.

VW-PH was selling the Jetta 1.6L TDI MT for 850k late last year. There was no ads for it in TV or in the local newspapers. It was offered to those who went into the VW showrooms. The Jetta 1.4L DSG turbo gas model was sold at 950k (400k discount). The Jetta 2.0L TDI DSG was offered at 1.05M (450k discount).

By the way, VW automatic cars with the DSG tranny are much quicker/faster than its MT variants.

    1. Welp! So should I be checking their website more often? I guess I need someone from their showrooms for first hand info like this, that Jetta 1.6TDI MT at that price would have been perfect!

BTW, how'd you know about those promos?

I'd prefer the manual for the smiles than the faster matic,TYVM.

    2. Well, VW-PH always send out text messages to existing clients if they have promos or any new model is to be released. We bought a Jetta TDI DSG around June last year.

Walk-in clients were also offered the same discounts. Premium taxi services bought a big number of the Jetta 1.6L TDI MT models.

Back in 2014, VW-PH released a limited number of Jetta 2.0L TDI MT models. It was a bit overpriced back then. Last year, VW-PH brought the lower-spec 1.6L TDI MT primarily for fleet buyers.

    3. So the Jetta you got was 1.5M or u got some discount as well? How is it holding up so far?

BTW thanks for the info, I'm so ditching Hyundai after this. I might get the 2.0 AT TDI for the wife but would still keep an eye on the manual (hopefully they still offer the 1.6 because cheaper) for me personally as 2nd car.

I already saw some VW agents post in OLX on the 1.1M Jetta and they look great.

    4. I wonder if VW gives discounts for these upcoming models. And does anybody know if their top of the line models of the Jetta and Golf has has curtain, side and drivers knee airbag? Thanks!

      Delete
    5. Yes, they are all equipped with these airbags you mentioned. Reserve now because this deal is very rare and stocks are limited. Bang for the buck any way you look at it!

I drive a manual TDI 1.6 Trendline, are you interested? It is still has 2Ks+ on the odo and Pure White in color.

    7. Gotta check it out personally. Then decide if i'll choose this instead of Civic RS. Thanks for the input guys!

How much is it? Can you post in OLX? The MT is actually something I need to pitch to the wife as she doesn't drive it and would prefer an AT (we already have an MT car). I'll just sweet talk her to get an SUV AT instead so I can get another MT sedan myself.

We got the Jetta 1.6L TDI DSG for less than 1M. All I can say is that the car is pretty well-built. It is heavier than its Asian compact counterparts and the interior is much better. It was a really good buy compared to an Altis 1.6V or Civic 1.8L. The new Civic RS interiors feels cheap compared to the Jetta's interiors.

The VW 1.6L TDI engine may only be rated at 105hp but the available torque of 250Nm from below 2k rpm gives it some grunt to be quick enough (around 10+ seconds on from 0-100 kmh). It feels very stable in triple digit speeds (120-160 kmh). The Jetta 1.6L TDI DSG is not as quick though as the Jetta/Golf 1.4L TSI DSG (turbo gas, 150hp, 250Nm) or the Jetta 2.0L TDI DSG.

Maybe you can get lucky if owners of the Jetta 1.6L TDI MT decide to part ways with them after just a few months of use. I think these base models come with steel rims but you can always change them to aftermarket rims. I think they only come in limited colors (black, white, silver).

    1. Good to hear. Do you have a VW group/car club in FB or in forums? I checked OLX and there is only one 2016 Jetta 1.6 TDI selling for 950k which is about the same as your purchase price, and it's the MT that i need for the second car.

A VW agent says there is a lot of stock but we're not sure how quickly the market will gobble it all up considering the word got out of this great deal (specs/price), unless most pinoys would just dismiss VW.

    2. There is a healthy discussion in Tsikot forum regarding VW's local model lineup. Last year, VW models were a bit more expensive than its Asian counterparts. However, the pricing is decent enough as you're getting something like an affordable Audi. I guess the local VW dealerships (Ayala group) decided to bring the price down like in other countries to bring it to the level of the competition.

We got ours thru a corporate discount. When VW placed a big discount last December (Jetta 1.6L TDI MT for 850k, Jetta 1.4L TSI DSG for 950k, Golf 1.4L TSI for 1M, Jetta 2.0L TDI DSG for 1.05M), the Jetta/Golf inventory flew off the shelves. VW-PH also sells a Golf Caddy MPV (2.0L TDI DSG) which has 7 seats and sliding rear doors. The SRP is around 1.5M which might be offered at a discount knowing that the Golf GTS wagon is priced cheaper now.

    3. Thanks bud. Yeah I do hope the local distributor price its line competitively going forward as this two, if only for better service and parts availability (at the cost of not being unique on the road but that's ok).

I inquired to an agent about the future availability of MT TDI the Jetta but he only knows of what's available (AT) and not of the plans.

I guess I'll just need to visit a dealership myself and check that forum you mentioned. TYVM

    1. The Jetta GLi is the sedan form of the Golf GTi. No news if it will be brought to the local market. If you want something similar in performance, you will either get the Golf GTi or the Passat 2.0T for around 2.3M.

  18. Guys you have to buy this car. I've tested this 2.0 TDI in Switzerland with the DSG and it was just a beauty soaking up the kilometers. Shame that VW PH cant bring in the Sharan. But seriously, this emgine is super good.

  21. We've test drove the Golf GTS Business Edition Plus yesterday - thanks to Miguel of VW Alabang. All I can say, this is one of the best compact sedans to date. The acceleration is monster!!! We drove it in the raining and can even keep in pace w/ a Ford Mustang in front of us (we are five inside the car). Definitely will consider buying this car.

  22. The Jetta and Golf GTS variants are very competitively priced. Having the TDI engine with DSG transmission is a plus. I'm now torn between getting a Golf GTS Business Edition + or a Subaru Forester 2.0i Premium. I wonder how I can convince the wife that getting both is the financially savvy move...
