Review: 2016 Honda CR-Z 1.5 Navi CVT

When Honda introduced the CR-Z, it was maligned for being the jack of all trades, but the master of none. That being said, its single biggest contribution is to prove that gasoline-electric hybrids aren’t dull to drive; that they aren’t just smart appliances on wheels. It showed that a car packing a small gasoline engine and a trick battery can dance pretty much through corners just as well as a standard sporty coupe. But is that all to it? Is the CR-Z simply going to be labeled as the tree hugger’s sporty car?

Review: 2014 Honda CR-Z Mugen CVT

First-timers will find the Honda CR-Z a mesmerizing, if not, confusing sports car considering all the tech shoved into it. Start it up and the instrument cluster alone has 11, yes, 11 separate clusters and gauges displaying all sorts of information. Add to that the 3-Mode Drive system to the left and the climate control to the right and it becomes apparent that the CR-Z’s made for the Gran Turismo generation. However, as you get used to it, operating the CR-Z becomes second nature; like a well-worn pair of Adidas running shoes (we’ve tested it in Modulo CVT trim and even pitted the MT versus the Toyota 86). Yes, this is one complex machine, but it’s completely understandable too. But what happens when Honda sprinkles a bit of their motorsports magic onto the CR-Z? The resulting sports hybrid is something that’s equally familiar and mysterious—meet the CR-Z Mugen.

2013 Honda CR-Z M/T vs 2013 Toyota 86 M/T

Some car enthusiasts say that we are what we drive. In fact, some even claim that a car is a window into the driver’s soul. So, what does driving a sports car say about you? It might mean that you are: one, someone who’s always at the center of attention; two, a risk-taker; three, a person of power and influence; or four, all of the above. A sports car is a statement piece. Nothing spells out success and wealth more than a sports car.

And now, thanks to an aggressive strategy emphasizing driving fun, Japanese car companies are finally getting into the sports car act, once a segment reserved for European makes and models. And the two most popular examples are the Honda CR-Z and the Toyota 86—subjects of this head-to-head grudge match.

Review: 2013 Honda CR-Z Modulo CVT

“Sports car” and “Hybrid” are not normally used in the same sentence. While a sports car is known for giving its drivers unparalleled thrills at the expense of fuel-efficiency; hybrids return unparalleled fuel-efficiency at the expense of driving thrills. Yet, that didn’t stop Honda from thinking outside of the box and provide a car that’s both thrilling to drive and yet, returns stellar fuel economy. Their concept isn’t without compromise, but it’s the cajones to actually develop and tinker with such an idea that merits the Honda CR-Z a good amount of attention.
