Review: 2019 Mazda2 Premium Series

Last year, a friend was deciding on her first car and one of the options that I recommended, straight out, was the Mazda2. Back then, the new generation Premium line had not even been launched; and the last year model of the Mazda2 that I was able to drive was the 2017. Yet, the impression remained that this was a car worth keeping on the list if you’re on the market for a no-nonsense, reliable sub-compact that came with impeccable style.

The World Says Goodbye to the Mazda Demio

Mazda has completed its shift to a global nameplate scheme with the discontinuation of the Demio moniker in Japan. After the demise of the Axela and Atenza names, the Demio will cease to exist in Mazda showrooms this September; and in its place is the global Mazda2 nameplate.

All Sub-Compacts Should be As Stylish as the Mazda2

All carmakers should take a page from Mazda’s playbook. Refusing to make boring cars, the Mazda has been experimenting with different styling bits for the Mazda2 sub-compact. Known as the Demio in Japan, they have been offering the “Style Collection” series over there.

A Word on Mazda's Design

Keyboard warriors (at least on this site) complain that all Mazda cars all look alike. So, in order to confirm (or deny) that, we’ll put that to the test. Here, we’re putting each of Mazda’s core models—the Mazda2, Mazda3, Mazda6, CX-3, and CX-5 side-by-side to see if they’re all just enlargements or reductions of the same thing.

Review: 2018 Honda City 1.5 E vs 2017 Mazda2 V+

The sub-compact car has become the new default family ride. Those who have a million and a half to spare can still go for mid-sized 7-seater SUVs, but the reality is, upwardly mobile Filipinos who once dreamed of owning a Civic or Mazda3 have to settle for their smaller kin. Still, carmakers seem to understand that while these buyers are willing to sacrifice a bit in terms of purchase price, they’re still willing to shell out for great convenience and tech features.

Review: 2017 Mazda 2 1.5V+

I know the Mazda2 very well since I spent a good two weeks with the hatchback and sedan just last year. In the time she called my garage her home, she enamored me with her good looks and driving charm. Sure, she could use more space, but you could see why she was judged Japan and the Philippines’s Car of the Year. A year later, she’s back and this time, she’s going by a new name. From the Mazda2 V, she’s now the Mazda2 V+. It turns out, that could very well mean: “Value Plus.”

Mazda2 Premium Series ambassador Gino M. Santos made a short film, entitled “Away” putting to screen his emotions about the zoom-zoom brand and how the right frame of mind can whisk us away from all the negativity. The 25-year old television and film director and producer has worked on many projects, but this is his first short film since his college days.

Stock Mazda2 Snatches Class Win at Philippine Endurance Challenge

Mazda’s intensive motorsports background has been brought to light as a showroom-stock Mazda2 hatchback finished the grueling 8-hour Philippine Endurance Challenge, snatching the Manufacturer’s Cup Trophy in the process. Long Distance Love Affair: The Mazda Skyactiv ASEAN Caravan

Photos by Ulysses Ang
There’s no greater test of love for a car than a long-distance drive. While it’s easy to get infatuated with a car right at the showroom floor, that feeling normally fades away the moment you put in the miles. You imagine the seating position could be better; the sight lines clearer; the power more linear. So imagine what Mazda put at stake when they subjected the entire Skyactiv-G line-up (except the MX-5 and Mazda6) on a grueling 4,000-kilometer journey through Indochina.

Mazda Philippines Makes Maps Available for Local Units

There’s more good news from Mazda Philippines. After confirming the arrival of the CX-3 subcompact crossover sooner rather than later, Berjaya Auto Philippines, the exclusive distributor of Mazda vehicles in the country, is also rectifying the single and glaring missing thing on its vehicles equipped with the Mazda Connection infotainment system: GPS navigation. Yes, Mazda owners, you can now activate turn-by-turn navigation.

Review: 2016 Mazda2 Skyactiv Sedan & Skyactiv Speed Hatchback

“Car of the Year” is an honor not bestowed on just any car. It takes something quite special to elevate a car from being just “good” to being “extraordinary”. See, it’s actually hard to find a bad car nowadays. Sure, there are some cars that are better than others, but for the most part, any modern automobile is better than anything being cranked out five years ago. Such is the playing field the Mazda2 had to overcome to win not just one, but two car of the year trophies—one in Japan and, more importantly, here in the Philippines. The question is: does it deserve the title?

Tokyo Auto Salon 2016: Mazda Wants You to be the Driver

“Be a driver” is a slogan adopted by Mazda to showcase the fun-to-drive attitude of its entire line-up. And it showed what could be done to give their line-up that extra edge at the 2016 Tokyo Auto Salon. Although most were left wanting a proper Mazdaspeed version of their cars (this is well and covered by the other exhibitors), Mazda did give racing concept versions of the MX-5 (Roadster in Japan), Mazda6, CX-3, and the Mazda2 (Demio in Japan).

First Drive: 2015 Mazda2 1.5 R Skyactiv

No matter how you look at it, the subcompact segment is a competitive one. Before, it was all about getting to Point A to Point B in the simplest, most no-frills way possible. It was entry-level motoring at its finest or at its worst. Today though, things are pretty different. Buyers are getting picky. They demand style, handling, and fuel economy—in other words, they want everything. And they’re not willing to pay a pretty penny for them too. It’s got to be affordable as well. Such is the world car manufacturers find themselves in; such is the world the Mazda2 has to fight in.

Mazda Philippines Enters Philippine GT Championship with Mazda2 Skyactiv Race Car

Photos by Ulysses Ang and Mazda Press
“Race on Sunday, sell on Monday”—that’s the line used by car manufacturers when asked why they delve into motorsports. The technology developed on the track (not to mention, the resulting marketing and publicity it generates) is beneficial in making their road cars better. That’s exactly what Mazda Philippines is hoping for as they officially enter the 2015 Philippine GT and Philippine Touring Car Championship (PTCC) by providing factory support to division titlist Edwin Rodriguez for the season.

MIAS 2015: The 2015 Mazda Collection Impresses

Mazda Philippines’s sprawling and intimidating 1,000 square-meter space at the Manila International Auto Show is a strong show of force and for very good reason. Just last year, Mazda achieved a milestone with overall sales almost doubling that of 2013. The end tally shows them selling more than 3,200 units overtaking Subaru in the process. Of course, the giant showcase isn’t just for celebration. They’ve used the occasion to strategically launch 13 all-new or significantly updated new models for 2015. In short, if you’re buying a car that’s not a Mazda, you better hold off that purchase.
