Review: 2017 Subaru Impreza 2.0i-S

Subaru is one of the most stubborn of carmakers. Whereas others would try dabbling in a particular technology only to abandon it altogether when all seems lost, Subaru would more or less tread the same path for years, if not decades. This explains the trademark ingredients that now make a Subaru, a Subaru: the horizontally-opposed Boxer engine and Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive. These key technologies have been carefully tweaked, honed, and polished to where they are today. Once in a while though, Subaru takes a leap of faith and makes something more revolutionary than evolutionary. The 2017 Impreza is one such example and one that comes with its own set of problems.

First Drive: 2017 Subaru Impreza 2.0i-S

It’s not every day you have a committed man thinking of having an illicit affair, but that’s exactly what happened when I got introduced to the shapely new 2017 Subaru Impreza. As a proud owner of an immaculate 2008 model (the rare hatchback no less), I’ve always found it difficult to find a suitable replacement to her charms. After every test drive, I always come back to my beloved Empress’s sweet embrace and I think to myself: ‘till death do us part. That is until I met Empress’s sultry younger sister.

With the Philippine launch of the 2017 Subaru Impreza still two months away, information about it will slowly trickle into the internet. We discussed what makes the all-new Impreza so impressive, we also took a closer look at the Impreza tS, we also took is for a spin. Now, we got our hands on what could be the preliminary Philippine specs of the 2017 Impreza. We say it’s preliminary because it’s based on the model which distributor Motor Image has committed to three counties: Singapore, Taiwan, and the Philippines. There could be some minor tweaking here and there, but expect the major specs to remain solid.

Most, if not all Japanese carmakers have an in-house tuning division that gives their vehicles a little bit of something extra be it through looks or performance. In the case of Subaru, it’s Subaru Technica International or STI. And though the 2017 Impreza, known by its model codename ‘GK’, is fresh off the boat for its ASEAN debut in Singapore, tucked at the side of distributor Motor Image’s booth are two units decked out in yummy STI parts.

New York International Auto Show: 2017 Subaru Impreza Debuts

You’re looking at the 2017 Impreza, the first vehicle underpinned by Subaru’s new global platform architecture. It’s supposed to also debut the company’s new design language, DYNAMIC x SOLID but frankly, it looks like a bore; like a Legacy with more lines. But before dismissing the car as a whole, listen carefully because this is a barometer of Subaru cars to come.

Photos by Ulysses Ang and Subaru Press
Fuji Heavy Industries, the manufacturer of Subaru automobiles, used the 44th Tokyo Motor Show 2015 to show the first and most important piece of its mid-term “Prominence 2020” corporate vision: the Impreza 5-Door Concept. Although purely a design concept previewing Subaru’s entry-level model, the Impreza 5-Door Concept does show cues that hint at the design direction of the entire future line-up.

Subaru Impreza Gets Hybrid Model in Japan

Well, that took longer than expected. After touting its Subaru XV Hybrid way back in 2013, it would only be a matter of time before the Impreza Sport (hatchback) gets the same battery love. Well, that wait is over, at least for Japan where Subaru just took the wraps off the Impreza Sports Hybrid.

2014 Mazda3 vs the Competition

So where does the all-new 2014 Mazda3 stack up against its compact car competition. Here, we’re pitting the 2.0 R 4-door against its most likely 2.0-liter competition: the Honda Civic, Toyota Corolla Atlis, Mitsubishi Lancer EX, Subaru Impreza, and Ford Focus.

The information presented below cannot be too segment specific since this will be a new feature of this site (each time a new car comes out), so you cannot expect things like Active City Stop, i-Eloop, etc. This serves as a handy reference guide only. The best figures are presented in bold.

Subaru Launches Most Affordable Impreza Yet: 2.0i CVT at P 1,128,000

The compact car war is certainly heating up this 2014 as Subaru distributor, Motor Image Pilipinas launches its most affordable Impreza yet, the 2.0i. Priced at just P 1,128,000, the 2014 Subaru Impreza 2.0i comes equipped with the company’s efficient and responsive Lineartronic CVT as standard. It replaces the even more expensive 2.0i M/T that cost P 30,000 more. It’s also cheaper than the previous generation (GH7) Impreza’s automatic transmission that would have been P 60,000 more.

And yet, a glance at the 2014 Impreza 2.0i spec sheet reveals even more technology for the price.

Video: Subaru Impreza Beats Differently

Subaru has brought in Kouteisennin and Time Machine, along with beat boxers Tatsuya and Rinka to let you experience the spirit of the Impreza without even seeing the car. The result is a rather eclectic mix of interpretative dance and movement. Quite unique if you ask me. Have a great weekend!

Review: 2012 Subaru Impreza 2.0i-Sport and XV 2.0i

In any family, there’s always a degree of sibling rivalry going on. Whether it’s comparing which one shoots hoops better or aces more tests, pitting siblings in what seems to be a head-to-head grudge match is almost unavoidable in any family. Naturally, this comparison is much more heated when you’re talking about twins—people typically comment that one is more handsome or smarter than the other.
