Review: 2015 Subaru Outback 3.6R-S

Photos by Ulysses Ang
Subaru has always been different, catering to a kind of customer who desires something a bit more special than your mainstream sedan or crossover. Time and time again, the company has shown that that strategy has worked. For instance, the XV continues to be a brisk seller compared to the Impreza on which it’s based on. And although they’ve strived to iron out the kinks and smoothen the awkwardness with each new model generation, the intrinsic Subaru difference is still there.

First Drive: 2015 Subaru Legacy 2.5i-S and Outback 2.5i-S

No turbo? That’s inevitably the first question asked by everyone during the launch of the all-new 2015 Subaru Legacy and Outback in Bangkok. It’s also the one question that Mr. Masayuki Uchida, Senior Project General Manager for both products could easily answer. His response: a turbocharged engine is not in line with the Legacy or Outback’s character. He’s aiming for an executive sedan with a smooth, comfortable, confident, and above all, linear driving experience; a turbocharged engine simply cannot deliver the refinement he wants. Mr. Uchida should know what he’s talking about: the vastly experienced 55-year old has worked on the Legacy since the first-generation model in 1981. This effectively means he’s worked on Subaru’s flagship offering for about half his life.

2015 Subaru Outback is Still Basically the Raised Legacy Wagon You Love

It seems reports of Subaru ditching the tall-riding wagon look for the all-new Outback are greatly exaggerated as the company unveiled the fifth-generation model at the New York International Auto Show. Like its predecessors, the all-new Outback is instantly recognizable as a tall-riding Legacy, something that has attracted a fiercely loyal clientele since the first generation launched in 1995.

Road Trip: Subaru Outback to Bataan

I consider traveling outside Metro Manila to be quite a chore. Though the promise of fresh air and endless expanse of greenery is welcoming indeed; to get there, you usually end up traversing terrible roads. And with only a low-slung hatchback in my garage, I have to contemplate whether the trip is worth the suspension damage I may suffer on the way. Needless to say, with the right car and the right destination, I’m willing to take on even a ten-hour driving challenge single-handedly. And though it didn’t take us ten hours, that’s exactly what happened when I recently took the Subaru Outback to Las Casas Filipinas de Acuzar in Bagac, Bataan.
