Review: 2012 Toyota 86 Aero

Thumbs-up, catcalls, whistles, and snaps from cell phone cameras—this is what it’s like to drive the all-new Toyota 86 on public roads. No other car that I’ve driven, including other two-door sports cars twice or even quadruple the price gets and attracts as much attention as this. And this is just the first hour of a five-day love affair with Toyota’s dreamy coupe. Forget twisty mountain roads or race tracks, we all know how the 86 can easily beat the best of them, so you won’t hear any of that here. The mission here is to find out if the 86 is as good as any Toyota as a daily driver.

First Drive: 2012 Toyota 86

Photos by Ulysses Ang

Upon his appointment as Toyota Motor Corporation CEO, Akio Toyoda has one goal: make Toyota fun-to-drive once again. As the founder’s grandson, Akio-san knows that one vital ingredient to make this dream a reality is to create an affordable and spirited sports car. Before the birth of the 86, it was puzzling that Toyota—being the world’s largest automaker, didn’t have a single sports car in its line-up. The absence was made even more obvious given the carmaker’s illustrious past: Toyota Sports 800, 2000GT, Celica, MR2, and Supra. Now, after years of anticipation and excitement, the long wait is over as the company has introduced a new addition to its line-up; one that finally re-introduces a legend: the Toyota 86 sports car.

Toyota Motor Philippines Launches 86

After years of anticipation and excitement, the long wait is over. Toyota Motor Philippines uncovers the legendary 86 sports coupe in June of 2012. Made famous by car enthusiast, the number “86” presents multiple meanings behind it, including the rich history of Toyota sports cars and the emotions that went into building this vehicle. It shares the same number based on the motor show concept “FT-86”, which in turn was patterned on the 1982 Toyota AE86 also known as the hachiroku; a car which never relied on beastly horsepower but instead on a combination of a lightweight design, responsive power and a perfect balance. 30 years later, the 86 is reborn with the spirit and the heart of its predecessors; the 2000GT, Sports 800 and the AE86.

Toyota Motor Philippines Launches "86 Sightings" Marketing Campaign

Toyota Motor Philippines, in what could be the best guerrilla marketing move, has launched the Toyota "86 Sightings" to mark the upcoming launch of the 86 sports coupe in June (we'll be there on June 18-19 for the media track day). If you want to see the 86 in the flesh a full month before we'll get to drive one, the schedule is located after the break.

Toyota 86 Appears in Toyota Thai Website, Priced Ridiculously

While trying to search for information about the upcoming April launch of the Toyota Camry, we happened to stumble on a little nugget of information in Toyota's official Thailand Website: the Toyota 86 is now available for order in the Kingdom of Thailand. Of course, this just means that the reality of seeing an 86 on the roads of Manila is slowly becoming a reality.

Unfortunately for us, it seems that Toyota Thailand didn't get the memo with regards to the Toyota 86's aggressive pricing strategy. In the US, a similar Subaru BRZ / Scion FR-S can be yours for just a little over US$ 25,000 (~ P 1,075,000). However, in Thailand, the Toyota 86 starts at a whopping THB 2,490,000 which translates to over P 3,400,000! If this is any indication to the 86's Philippine pricing, we have an advice for Toyota: don't bring it in! Sorry Toyota, but ou'll probably have better luck selling a Prius or two at a million bucks less.

Toyota and Subaru Confirm 86 and BRZ Plans for Philippines

In two separate announcements, both Toyota Motor Philippines (TMP) and Motor Image Pilipinas (MI) have announced that the Toyota 86 and the Subaru BRZ will be made available to Philippine car enthusiasts.

TMP, the Philippine office of Toyota Motor Corporation has announced that the Toyota 86 (or in Europe, the GT 86) will be launched in the Philippine market. In an interview held at the sidelines of the 2011 Tokyo Motor Show, Toyota Motor Philippines President Michinobu Sugata was quoted as saying, "We are launching the Toyota 86 in the Philippines quite soon."

Speaking in a non-committal manner, another Toyota Motor Philippines executive said that the Toyota 86 is slated for a mid-2012 launch with a price tag of no more than P 2-million.

On the other hand, MI has confirmed that the Subaru version of the two-door sports coupe, the BRZ will be on sale in the Philippines by mid-2012.

This just means that both the Subaru BRZ and the Toyota 86 will be made available at roughly the same time. This equates to more choices to car enthusiasts in the country. We can't wait!

Toyota Reveals GT 86 Sports Car

Photos courtesy of Toyota Press
After countless teasers, concepts and production mules seen around the world (particularly near the Nürburgring), Toyota has finally taken the wraps off its much-waited FT-86. Though the reveal is supposed to be at the Tokyo Motor Show, Toyota's UK office has released the first official photos as well as some initial specifications.

It has also been revealed that the car will be dropping the "FT" moniker for something much simpler: "86". Yes, that's right--the car will be called the Toyota 86. However, for Europe, the two-seater will be called Toyota GT 86. Of course, depending on where you are, the 86 will be called by different names. In the US, it will be known as a Scion FR-S.
