There Will Be a Second-Generation Subaru BRZ
The introduction of the Toyota Supra, particularly a base 197-horsepower variant in Japan has certainly put the “Toyobaru” twins back in the spotlight. Will Subaru and Toyota move forward with a next-generation 86 and BRZ? Or will their affordable coupe bit the dust after just one, albeit lengthy, model generation?

2017 Toyota 86 A/T vs 2016 Mazda MX-5 A/T
Having high levels of horsepower is something most people crave for, but there’s also something deeply satisfying with a well-balanced sports car. By perfectly dialing in not just the engine output, but the steering, chassis, and brakes as well, they become more of good dance partners, following your lead without trying to overwhelm you at every corner.

2015 Volkswagen Golf GTI vs the Competition
The original hot hatch is finally here: the 2015 Volkswagen Golf GTI. Although the GTI nameplate has been around for a while in Europe, it’s the relative new comer here in the Philippines. In this match up, the Golf GTI is pitted against the Filipino favorites: Subaru WRX, MINI Cooper S, and the Toyota 86.

2013 Honda CR-Z M/T vs 2013 Toyota 86 M/T
Some car enthusiasts say that we are what we drive. In fact, some even claim that a car is a window into the driver’s soul. So, what does driving a sports car say about you? It might mean that you are: one, someone who’s always at the center of attention; two, a risk-taker; three, a person of power and influence; or four, all of the above. A sports car is a statement piece. Nothing spells out success and wealth more than a sports car.
And now, thanks to an aggressive strategy emphasizing driving fun, Japanese car companies are finally getting into the sports car act, once a segment reserved for European makes and models. And the two most popular examples are the Honda CR-Z and the Toyota 86—subjects of this head-to-head grudge match.

Toyota Preview 86 Convertible for Geneva Debut
Toyota has confirmed its lineup for the 2013 Geneva Motor Show and although the all-new RAV4 is there and so is the new Auris Touring Sports (future Corolla?), the biggest headline is the world premiere of the 86 convertible.
Still carrying the concept moniker, the 86 convertible (properly referred to as "FT-86 Open Concept") is a sneak peek at a "possible future variant" of the 86 (Toyota's own words). Of course, everyone knows that the 86 and its corporate twin, the Subaru BRZ is designed to maintain its structural rigidity even with its roof lopped off, so mostly likely the "concept car" we'll see in Geneva is nothing more than a thinly disguised version.
Right now, enjoy the official sketch provided by Toyota Motors Europe, but we'll be covering the 2013 Geneva Motor Show during the first week of March.

Review: 2012 Toyota 86 Aero

Thumbs-up,
catcalls, whistles, and snaps from cell phone cameras—this is what it’s like to
drive the all-new Toyota 86 on public roads. No other car that I’ve driven,
including other two-door sports cars twice or even quadruple the price gets and
attracts as much attention as this. And this is just the first hour of a
five-day love affair with Toyota’s dreamy coupe. Forget twisty mountain roads
or race tracks, we all know how the 86 can easily beat the best of them, so you
won’t hear any of that here. The mission here is to find out if the 86 is as
good as any Toyota as a daily driver.

Upon his appointment as Toyota Motor
Corporation CEO, Akio Toyoda has one goal: make Toyota fun-to-drive once again. As the
founder’s grandson, Akio-san knows that one vital ingredient to make this dream
a reality is to create an affordable and spirited sports car. Before the birth
of the 86, it was puzzling that Toyota—being
the world’s largest automaker, didn’t have a single sports car in its line-up.
The absence was made even more obvious given the carmaker’s illustrious past:
Toyota Sports 800, 2000GT, Celica, MR2, and Supra. Now, after years of
anticipation and excitement, the long wait is over as the company has
introduced a new addition to its line-up; one that finally re-introduces a
legend: the Toyota
86 sports car.

Toyota Motor Philippines Launches "86 Sightings" Marketing Campaign
Toyota Motor Philippines, in what could be the best guerrilla marketing move, has launched the Toyota "86 Sightings" to mark the upcoming launch of the 86 sports coupe in June (we'll be there on June 18-19 for the media track day). If you want to see the 86 in the flesh a full month before we'll get to drive one, the schedule is located after the break.

Toyota 86 Appears in Toyota Thai Website, Priced Ridiculously
While trying to search for information about the upcoming April launch of the Toyota Camry, we happened to stumble on a little nugget of information in Toyota's official Thailand Website: the Toyota 86 is now available for order in the Kingdom of Thailand. Of course, this just means that the reality of seeing an 86 on the roads of Manila is slowly becoming a reality.
Unfortunately for us, it seems that Toyota Thailand didn't get the memo with regards to the Toyota 86's aggressive pricing strategy. In the US, a similar Subaru BRZ / Scion FR-S can be yours for just a little over US$ 25,000 (~ P 1,075,000). However, in Thailand, the Toyota 86 starts at a whopping THB 2,490,000 which translates to over P 3,400,000! If this is any indication to the 86's Philippine pricing, we have an advice for Toyota: don't bring it in! Sorry Toyota, but ou'll probably have better luck selling a Prius or two at a million bucks less.

Toyota and Subaru Confirm 86 and BRZ Plans for Philippines
In two separate announcements, both Toyota Motor Philippines (TMP) and Motor Image Pilipinas (MI) have announced that the Toyota 86 and the Subaru BRZ will be made available to Philippine car enthusiasts.
TMP, the Philippine office of Toyota Motor Corporation has announced that the Toyota 86 (or in Europe, the GT 86) will be launched in the Philippine market. In an interview held at the sidelines of the 2011 Tokyo Motor Show, Toyota Motor Philippines President Michinobu Sugata was quoted as saying, "We are launching the Toyota 86 in the Philippines quite soon."
Speaking in a non-committal manner, another Toyota Motor Philippines executive said that the Toyota 86 is slated for a mid-2012 launch with a price tag of no more than P 2-million.
On the other hand, MI has confirmed that the Subaru version of the two-door sports coupe, the BRZ will be on sale in the Philippines by mid-2012.
This just means that both the Subaru BRZ and the Toyota 86 will be made available at roughly the same time. This equates to more choices to car enthusiasts in the country. We can't wait!
