Honda Cars PH Launches All-New 2022 Civic. Prices Start At 1.290M (w/ Specs)

In an uncharacteristic move, Honda Cars Philippines has given us the general features of the all-new 2022 Civic a week and a half before its launch (read the story here). But now that they’ve officially launched their compact sedan, it’s time to dive into the details.

Review: 2000 Honda Civic VTi

With the amazing debut of the Ford Lynx Ghia, one begins to wonder if Honda's grasp on the 1.6-liter market would begin to fade.  In terms of market share, it seems that it hasn't happened just yet.  In fact, Honda has maintained a healthy second place in sales for the 1.6-liter segment despite having a car that is nearly five years old and is becoming too common to be called different.  So what makes the Honda Civic a big seller then?  Why do people keep on flocking Honda's way when they could get cars with much more features for the same price?  I decided to find out for myself.

Review: 2002 Honda Civic VTi-S vs Toyota Corolla Altis 1.8G

Ever since the introduction of the Honda Civic back in the early 1990s, it became an overnight success.  The ‘bug-eyed’ generation seemed to have no end as it seemed that everyone owned a Civic, whether it was an LXi, VTi or SiR.  Funny thing is that when Toyota released its Corolla back in 1998 it had all the safety equipment and some of the luxuries like better plastics and an upgraded stereo system.  Nonetheless, the Civic still ran away with the sales lead.

Honda Cars Philippines Unveils Much Awaited 2012 Civic

Photos courtesy of Honda Press
After much delay, Honda Cars Philippines, Inc. (HCPI) has finally unveiled the all-new 2012 Civic at the start of their weekend-long festivities dubbed Honda Mania at the Bonifacio Global City in Taguig City.

Though it looks pretty much close to the previous-generation Civic, Honda has repeatedly said that the ninth-generation Civic features an all-new sheet metal as well as extensive work done on its proven platform and drivetrain. Known for its sporty handling and practicality, Honda said that they have kept these traits while focusing more to improve the Civic's fuel efficiency for this all-new model. Among the changes include a design that has a co-efficient of drag that's 3.8 percent lower, a body that's seven percent lighter thanks to 55 percent high-tensile steel and bigger interior room with a wider shoulder width and rear seat room. Honda engineers have also improved the 2012 Civic's overall visibility by over nine percent.

Under the hood, the Civic carries on with the previous model's 1.8-liter and 2.0-liter two-stage VTEC engine. Power generated is 141 horsepower and 155 horsepower respectively connected to a 5-speed automatic. The suspension is independent all-around with MacPherson Struts upfront and Multi-Links at the back. The 2012 model features a longer suspension stroke to further reduce the transmission of unwanted "shocks" into the cabin.

Though the Civic is traditionally Honda's most mainstream model, because of the Thailand plant's shutdown, HCPI is currently offering the Civic in a single flavor: the 1.8 EXi. This sole model, available in four colors (Urban Titanium, Taffeta White, Carnelian Red and Crystal Black) is imported as a completely built-up model from Japan. Because of this, the Civic has a slightly prohibitive price of P 1.074-M. Nonetheless, it comes fully loaded with almost everything as standard.

Features on the 2012 Honda Civic 1.8 EXi include: projector-type halogen headlights, front fog lamps, 16-inch alloys with 205/55 R 16 rubber, door-mounted side turn lights, rear reversing camera, an integrated audio system with CD/MP3/USB connectivity with 6 speakers, steering wheel controls, cruise control, Bluetooth hands-free phone function, 60/40 split-fold rear seats, leather steering wheel, dual SRS airbags, ABS and vehicle stability assist.

Review: 2012 Honda Civic 2.0 EL

Photos by Ulysses Ang
We’ve already taken the 2012 Honda Civic 1.8 E (Thai-built model) on a full-blown test drive that lasted a week. Suffice to say, we weren’t so impressed the first time around. We concluded that Honda was doing their utmost best to ape a Corolla Altis, when they should have built a sportier compact.

So how would the Civic 2.0 fare? Will a bigger engine and some additional luxury trimmings turn the tide from utter beige-ness? Read on.

Review: 2014 Honda Civic 2.0 EL MUGEN

Photos by Ulysses Ang
Editor’s Note: Click here for our review of the 2012 Honda Civic EL.

The Honda Civic is in a very peculiar situation. Next to its other stable mates: City, Jazz, and Accord, it’s quite pedestrian in every sense of the word. Designed during the 2008 economic downturn, Honda banked that buyers would opt for a simple compact sedan with solid but unremarkable virtues: spacious, frugal, and reliable. Instead, all of its competitors moved in a completely different direction, offering cars with features a class or two higher. The initial supply problems (Thai floods) didn’t help things either. And though the Civic is still selling pretty well, it’s not anymore as lauded as its predecessor (at least for critics). Knowing very well that the compact segment is shrinking and the battle getting all the more competitive, Honda rushed in to refresh the Civic this year. The question is: is it enough?

Review: 2019 Honda Civic RS Turbo

With all the hype that surrounded the Type-R in recent years, the standard Honda Civic seemed to have gotten lost in all the fanfare. Considering how, before the CR-V ever came along and became its top seller, the Civic was one of Honda’s finest. Admittedly, after growing up on the fifth-generation Civic, the succeeding generations waned in terms of aesthetic appeal, compared to their predecessors. It lost that sporty, racer-edged design formula that made it uniquely a Honda. That, however, has begun to change.

Honda Cars PH Drops The Price Of Refreshed 2021 Civic Type R (w/ Specs)

Last week, we reported that Honda Cars Philippines is bringing in a limited number of the new 2021 Civic Type R. You can check out our story here, but if you want the official info from HCPI, read on.

Confirmed is that there are three colors available—the classic Championship White and two new shades—Racing Blue and Sonic Gray.

The 2021 Civic Type R also comes with a refreshed exterior design and a new front grille that decreases coolant temperature by up to 10 degrees—perfect for constant hammering on the race track.

Inside, it gets a new Alcantara-wrapped leather steering wheel, redesigned shift knob, and an updated 7-inch infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto (hurray physical knobs).

The 2.0-liter VTEC Turbo remains unchanged, but it does now benefit from Active Sound Control as well as improvements to its suspension and brakes.

The 2021 Civic Type R also comes with Honda SENSING as standard. Using a monocular camera and a millimeter wave radar, it gives this hot hatch an array of driver assistive functions.

Okay, here’s the best news of all: to celebrate the arrival of the 2021 Civic Type R, Honda Cars Philippines’ giving a P 100,000 discount until September 30, 2021. That brings down the price of the better equipped, better handling Civic Type R from its P 3.21-million suggested retail price to just P 3.11-million—this effectively makes it cheaper than the outgoing Civic Type R.

Check out the full specs and press release below.

Press Release: Honda Officially Launches New Civic Type R In The Philippines

Honda Cars Philippines, Inc., Honda’s automobile business unit in the Philippines is pleased to introduce the New Honda Civic Type R, refreshed with a new sporty exterior design and mechanical updates which aims to further improve the model’s already exhilarating driving performance.

The Civic Type R was first introduced in the Philippine Market in 2017. Having the highest distinction for performance for the Civic model line-up, the Civic Type R has been phenomenally sought after with the first one hundred (100) units made available for the Philippine market, booked within 48 hours upon the announcement of its availability.

The Civic Type R continues to be one of the most sought after and desired performance vehicles today.

This is due to the model’s strong following, multiple recognitions, rich racing heritage, and several track records broken in some of the world’s most challenging racetracks.

Exterior

Outside, the New Civic Type R receives a refreshed sporty update while still boasting a comprehensive and improved aerodynamic package. The front and rear bumper get updated with new lower fog light surrounds. It features a new symmetrical design, smooth surfaces, and sleek styling blades which contributes to the New Civic Type R’s cleaner styling. The front and rear bumpers and side skirts continue to sport a carbon fiber effect front splitter, side underspoilers, and rear diffuser with a sporty red accent line, which runs around the entire vehicle contributing to its distinctive look.

At the rear, the Type R spoiler works in conjunction with vortex generators found by the rear edge of the roofline. Diverting air flow across the tail and generating additional downforce on the rear axle, the wing contributes to overall negative lift, and improves road-holding abilities, particularly through high-speed corners for better high-speed stability.

The New Civic Type R sports a new front grille design with a new thinner grille beam. It provides a 13 percent larger air intake area. Combined with the Type R’s updated radiator core, this decreases coolant temperature by up to 10 degrees (under Honda internal testing) during high-demand situations, such as track driving.

Filling the enlarged wheel arches are 20-inch Berlina Black alloy wheels completing the New Civic Type R’s sporty exterior stance.

Interior

Inside, the New Civic Type R builds on the sporty, sleek and sophisticated interior space of the 10th generation Civic’s cabin. The New Civic Type R features a high center console complemented by the striking Type R spec bucket seats sporting a suede-effect red and black fabric trim. It gives the driver and passenger that sports car feel given its low seating position. Carbon center inlays and red accents can be found on the Type R’s dashboard extending towards the side door panels.

A new Alcantara-wrapped steering wheel and a new teardrop style gear knob, similar to previous Type R models, have been introduced for the New Civic Type R. These updates aim to provide optimized steering wheel grip and improved gear shift feel and accuracy. These subtle changes combined aim to enhance the driver’s feel once behind the wheel. On top of these new upgrades, the exclusive Type R serial number plate is found below the gear shift lever.

In front of the driver, the instrument display layout provides vivid clarity and highly intuitive user interface. A 7-inch full color Thin Film Transistor (TFT) LCD Display makes up the central section of the instrument cluster and can display a variety of different function readouts including, Driving mode display (+R, Sport, Comfort), LED gearshift indicator light, Turbo boost pressure gauge, Throttle/brake input display and G-Meter.

On top of the center console sits an updated 7-inch Touch Screen Display Audio System with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto capability. The control functions for the infotainment and climate control system have been updated with additional physical buttons and tactile knobs for optimum usability and functionality.

Drivetrain

Under the hood, the New Civic Type R retains its 2.0-litre VTEC TURBO engine that produces a maximum power output of 310 PS at 6,500rpm, and peak torque of 400 Nm from 2,500rpm to 4,500rpm. The engine is mated to a 6-speed manual transmission equipped with a rev match control system enabling the car to sustain maximum power during gearshifts.

To emphasize its soulful performance, the New Civic Type R now comes equipped with Active Sound Control (ASC), complementing the Type R’s triple exhaust system’s refined note. With the ASC, the Type R’s audio system provides an enhanced engine sound within the cabin during aggressive driving in Sport and +R modes, refining it during acceleration in Comfort mode and enhancing the driving experience.

To further improve the Civic Type R’s responsive and confidence-inspired handling, improvements on the suspension and brake systems have also been updated for more responsive and sharper handling. The Civic Type R’s Adaptive Damper System’s control software has been upgraded to allow faster road condition evaluation, resulting in improved damper reactions for better handling response and ride quality.

In terms of braking, upfront, the New Civic Type R comes equipped with Brembo four-piston calipers paired to a new two-piece floating 350mm front brake discs and new brake pads. The enhancements in the Type R’s braking system not only improves thermal efficiency but also reduces brake fade for increased capabilities during high-intensity driving for optimized on-track performance.

Honda SENSING

As part of Honda’s aim to provide collision-free and safe mobility, the New Civic Type R now comes equipped with Honda’s SENSING suite of driver-assistive functions. Through a monocular camera and wave millimeter radar simultaneously working to monitor and assess various road conditions in front of the vehicle, Honda SENSING alerts the driver of potential hazards that may occur. Honda’s suite of driver-assistive features provides an array of advanced safety features such as Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC), Collision Mitigation Braking System (CMBS), Lane Keeping Assist System (LKAS), Road Departure Mitigation (RDM), and Lane Departure Warning (LDW).

Together with Honda SENSING, the New Civic Type R comes standard with an array of safety features such as Front Driver and Passenger Airbags, Side and Side Curtain Airbags, Anti-Lock Braking System (ABS) with Electronic Brake-force Distribution (EBD), Vehicle Stability Assist (VSA), Hill Start Assist (HSA), and Multi-View Reverse Camera w/ Guidelines.

Colors and Availability

The New Civic Type R will be available at a suggested retail price of P 3,210,000 and will be available in three colors: Championship White, Racing Blue (New Color), and Sonic Gray (New Color).

As a special treat, HCPI is offering an introductory P 100,000 discount for the New Civic Type R from July 27 to September 30, 2021.

2023 Honda Civic RS: A Comeback Worth Waiting For

The thing about driving a Honda—any Honda, for that matter—is that there is likely some form of history or experience that the driver can draw from. After all, the brand has been in the Philippines for over 30 years. With that number alone, it can be safely said that at least 2 generations of Filipinos have had the pleasure of growing up with a Honda vehicle, whether it be the founding classics or a modern revamp.

Did Honda Just Leak The Refreshed 2024 Civic?

Hard to believe, but the 11th generation Honda Civic has been around since 2021. As such, it’s pretty much ready for a mid-cycle refresh sometime this year. Now, normally carmakers would like to keep the exact timings a closely guarded secret, but in the case of Honda, they outed the launch timing themselves.

Review: 2012 Honda Civic 1.8 EX

Photos by Ulysses Ang
For the life of me, I can’t seem to understand women and their almost-infinite choice of clothing styles. More than once, I’ve been accused of not paying attention to what my wife wears when she readily points out that her blouse today has got wider stripes compared to the one she wore yesterday. I mean, stripes are stripes. But the tables are turned when it comes to cars where I can readily point out each make and model based on a particular view, part, or sometimes even just by the engine sound. So when I drove up in the all-new Honda Civic, the first thing she asked? So what’s new?

Review: 2022 Honda Civic RS Turbo Honda SENSING

The compact car segment is fast shrinking here in the Philippines. What was once considered as the starter family car has now been replaced by genre-bending crossovers, SUVs, and even pick-up trucks. Despite the volume thinning faster than a guy in his forties, not everyone’s giving up on the segment just yet. Case in point is Honda and their all-new Civic RS Turbo.

Honda Cars Philippines launches sportier Civic for 2014 (w/ Complete Brochure)

Amidst the City, Jazz, Accord and even the CR-Z, the Civic is undoubtedly the face of Honda, especially in the Philippines. Through the years, it has earned its rightful place in the hearts and minds of Filipino buyers with its sporty DNA, driver-centric attributes, and affordable pricing. However, the entry of the ninth-generation Civic in 2012 underscored a difficult time at Honda. Not only did they have to resort to launching a single variant, imported from Japan, due to a plant shutdown in Thailand, it was received lukewarmly especially with its less than sporty design.

Just How Good Is The Base 2022 Honda Civic S Turbo?

Four hundred. That’s the number of 11th generation Civics Honda Cars Philippines has been able to sell so far since its launch in November. That may not seem like a large number, but putting things into context, that’s about four units a day; not bad for what the Japanese carmaker has recognized as a market reduced to a mere sliver of what it once was during its heyday.
