Review: 2014 Honda Jazz 1.5 VX+ MUGEN

Photos by Ulysses Ang
There are hatchbacks and there is the Honda Jazz. From Generation One, the Jazz has always been known for combining a sharply styled body, stellar frugality, and mind-blowing interior packaging. Most importantly, it has made small hatchbacks cool again. Since then, a handful of competitors have entered, each outshining the Jazz in one aspect or another be it in terms of price, handling, interior technology or frugality. Nonetheless, the Jazz is still regarded as the most well-rounded hatchback of the bunch. And coming from that, here is the all-new, 2014 Jazz—a car that’s far better than its predecessor and one that simply towers ahead of the entire small hatchback segment.

Review: 2012 Honda Accord and 2012 Honda Jazz

On any other day, it’s like comparing apples to oranges, or more appropriately in this case, comparing a bottle of Gold Eagle to Stella Artois. They’re both brewed from the same combination of cereal, barley and wheat but the end result couldn’t be further apart. Yet, you cannot deny that the fundamental ingredients are the same. The same could be said about driving two cars from the same manufacturer, in this case, Honda. At first glance, the sub-P800,000 hatchback Jazz and the sub-P2-million Accord may seem worlds apart, but they do have the very same basic ingredient: superb engineering. And that’s the basis of this back-to-back drive.

There and Back Again: What Makes the All-new Honda Jazz Handle So Well

Photos by Ulysses Ang and Honda Press (Jam Ramos)
UPDATE: Here is our in-depth review of the Honda Jazz 1.5 VX+ MUGEN. (9/9/2014)

For those who say that there aren’t any good driving roads in the Philippines, I say you should go out more often. And though some so-called enthusiasts are more than happy pummeling the tires off their cars in a straight line (think NLEX, SLEX, or anything else ending in ‘EX’), real men like it bent. And twisty. And hardcore. Located a mere 15 kilometers or so east of the Ortigas Central Business District is the start of the infamous “Tanayburgring”—a clockwise loop of twisty, mountainous road stretching from Tanay, Rizal looping down to Quezon, Laguna, and Cavite before ending back up in Makati City. It’s a long, arduous route with no fancy pants coffee shop stopovers (at least for the first part) and one that really separates the men from the boys. So like a boy entering into puberty, I took to the Tanayburgring (well, at least a part of it) for the very first time and my weapon of choice: the all-new Honda Jazz.

All-New, 2020 Honda Jazz Goes Human-Centric Design

Honda ushers in a new era for its sub-compact car offering with the global unveil of the all-new Jazz at the 46th Tokyo Motor Show 2019. The all-new model eschews Honda’s “grand design” concept for a more human-centric design approach. It goes on sale first in its home market of Japan by February 2020 with the rest of the world to follow.

Review: 2018 Honda Jazz RS

For the longest time, Jazz buyers would add a trunk badge that reads: “RS.” Whether that particular mod really adds five more horsepower is something best discussed for another day, but it just goes to show you that “Honda” and “sporty hatchback” sound like a match made in heaven. As Honda managed to get back into the sporty groove, they’ve begun to formally introduce the RS trim to the Filipino consumer. From the Mobilio to the Civic, and now the Jazz, here comes the Road Sailing (yes, that’s what it means) treatment.

Review: 2018 Honda Jazz VX Navi

One of the first cars that I ever drove was a Honda Civic and compared to the other cars my family had at the time, I loved its feel. In this regard, I had high expectations for the Jazz. My initial doubts were not just about its size, but about how functional it can be for someone like me—a daily driver, likely to be caught in traffic 80 percent of time, with an allergy towards tight parking spaces and with little patience towards road hoarders.

The Honda Jazz MUGEN is Here

Last September, Honda Cars Philippines gave us the privilege to drive its concept Jazz 1.5 VX+ MUGEN edition with the caveat that it will be launching the official car in the third quarter of 2014 with a retail price that’s ‘to be announced’. Well, after all the speculation, here it is: the 2014 Honda Jazz MUGEN and it’s all yours for P 908,000.

Honda Introduces Jazz Special Edition

Photos courtesy of Honda Press
Honda Cars Philippines is saying that the Jazz is back in stock in very big way: by launching the Jazz Special Edition.

Now imported as a completely built-up unit from Japan (as opposed to Thailand), the Jazz Special Edition (1.5 EX) features different front and rear bumpers with fog lamps from the regular Jazz 1.5 (it actually shares its bumpers with the 1.3 variant). Aside from that, the Jazz Special Edition gets cruise control, steering wheel audio controls as well as a cooled upper glove box and power folding door mirrors. In terms of engine, the Jazz Special Edition has a 1.5-liter VTEC engine with 120 horsepower and a 5-speed automatic transmission.

Priced at P 899,000, the Jazz Special Edition is available in three colors including a new retina-burning Fresh Lime color.

More details in the Press Kit after the break.

Honda Lets Us Try Vehicle Stability Assist (VSA) in the All-New Jazz and City

Safety is perhaps the least sexiest topic to talk about when it comes to cars. Styling, performance, and even space dictates a car buyer’s heart in choosing their next vehicle purchase even before the subject of airbags, brakes, and crash safety are even brought up. This lack of safety-consciousness is reflected quite well in the multitude of new cars available in the market today with either no or just the barest minimum of safety equipment. However, before reaching out for the car that gives you a GPS and DVD combo, it might a good idea to actually what new safety technology such as Vehicle Stability Assist can do for you.

UPDATED: 2014 Honda Jazz / Fit: This Is It (New Info, Photos)

Honda has revealed a couple of photos of its all-new Jazz (known as the Fit in Japan) a few weeks after a magazine leaked out some photos. And from the photos, we like what we're seeing. The 2021 Honda City Hatchback Is One Sleek City Slicker

It has been a long while since my last Honda and in all fangirl honesty, I was secretly excited. If you hadn’t read my previous stories on the Honda Jazz, Mobilio, Brio, and CR-V, I grew up in a Honda-driving family. I practically knew what to expect with the arrival of each test drive unit. However, the one I was most impressed with was the 2018 Honda Jazz. That being said, I had high hopes for the City Hatchback, if only because I wanted it to prove all the doubting Thomases wrong for ever questioning its worthiness as the successor of the beloved Jazz.

There is a Non-Hybrid Honda Jazz After All

Honda shocked the world in announcing that the all-new Jazz/Fit will be available only in a gasoline-electric hybrid set-up. True enough, when it was unveiled globally at the Tokyo Motor Show last year, it debuted a new 2-motor hybrid system that’s part of Honda’s e:HEV brand push.
