First Drive: 2024 Ioniq 5 N

What is the Hyundai Ioniq 5 N exactly? It’s a straightforward question to ask, but harder to answer. See, it’s not exactly an electric hot hatch—it’s too big to fit that template. An electric high-performance crossover? Strictly speaking, yes, but that doesn’t capture the entire picture either.

The Hyundai Ioniq 5 N: The High-Performance EV For Petrol Heads By Petrol Heads

Electric and high-performance are two automotive concepts that lie at the opposites of a car enthusiast’s mind. Each one carries characteristics that don’t seem to jive with one another. Electric vehicles are seen as heavy, soulless, lumbering commuters, while high-performance cars are all about lightweight, visceral, communicative weekend joy machines. It’s this seemingly unattainable balance that Hyundai decided to work with in the development of the Ioniq 5 N—its high-performance EV.

Hyundai To Discontinue IONIQ In July

It is the end of an era. In July 2022, production of the original Hyundai Ioniq will end at the company’s Ulsan plant in South Korea. The last Ioniq to roll off the production line will mark the end of a significant chapter in Hyundai’s recent history. When the model launched in 2016, it became the world’s first car with three electrified powertrains: hybrid, plug-in hybrid, and battery-electric.

Review: 2019 Hyundai Ioniq Hybrid

Hybrids are commonly associated with manufacturers like Toyota, and that’s understandable because the Prius is the world’s best-selling hybrid and is the official poster child of environmentally-conscious motoring. That said, some don’t want to drive a Prius, and that’s understandable. It’s weird-looking, and at least in the Philippines, priced like an executive sedan. Enter the Hyundai Ioniq Hybrid—a car that says it’ll do everything the Prius can do. But the question is, can it do things better?

Review: 2023 Hyundai Ioniq 5 GLS 2WD Long Range

The Ioniq 5 isn’t Hyundai’s first EV, but it is their first EV that happens to turn heads. If you’ve only seen it from pictures, you’d presume it’s sized like a compact hatchback, sort of like a retro-futuristic Pony—the brand’s first mass-produced and exported car. However, it’s a big all-electric crossover. You can credit the bespoke E-GMP platform for that, and it’s a strength that Hyundai keeps on leaning on to make this one of the brightest gems for the year.
