Early this month, Mazda Philippines launched the 2022 CX-9. The refreshed 7-seater flagship SUV saw both aesthetic and detail changes for the new year. But before that happens, we got an invitation to view these 2022 CX-9s up close.

Review: 2018 Mazda CX-9 AWD Sport

The outside temperature gauge read 38 degrees Celsius and the climate control, set at cozy 22 degrees Celsius was struggling with the heat. One starts to wonder: if the CX-9 was already having difficulty maintaining the temperature inside, how much more in the engine bay? Fitted with the first turbocharged Skyactiv-G engine, the engine temperature kept on rising—middle, slightly above middle, and finally three-quarters to red. This impromptu road trip, it seems, could spell vindication or disaster for the much-vaunted Mazda CX-9.

Review: 2012 Mazda6, CX-7 and CX-9

Photos by Ulysses Ang
Normally, when one thinks of the Mazda brand, the image of a young driver, perhaps bordering on “boy-racer” comes to mind. Mind you, with products like the Mazda 2, 3 and the MX-5, that’s not such a bad thing. However, bringing back the love in everyday driving goes way beyond the “go-fast, live-fast” mantra that’s been instilled, somewhat unofficially, to the Mazda brand. In fact, beyond the compacts and sports cars, Mazda is home to three bright driving gems, all of which show an equal dose of sophistication and speed; comfort and handling fun; practicality and attitude: the Mazda6, CX-7, and CX-9.

Driving and comparing Mazda’s executive sedan, five-seater and seven-seater crossovers may seem somewhat odd given the different market segments they’re supposed to cater to. However, after driving these cars back-to-back-to-back, one thing’s clear: they’re all machined from the same magical piece of Mazda magic. The sheet metal alone serves as an indication to the sort of experience waiting to be discovered. Whether it’s the 6, CX-7 or CX-9, they’re equally aggressive and expressive without being comical or over-the-top. The flowing lines and taut features continue to remain fresh in the respective segments they’re in; while the squinting headlamps and large, smiling grille clearly ties them together as one family.

The 2020 Mazda CX-9 Doesn't Compromise Between Needs and Wants

Sitting atop the Mazda range is the three-row CX-9. As the brand’s flagship SUV, it brings the brand’s vision of premium to fruition by focusing on the true essence of luxury with its sophisticated style, well-appointed interior, and balanced dynamics.

Review: 2019 Mazda CX-9 FWD Touring

This is a drive seeking redemption. The last time I had the CX-9, the experience wasn’t as smooth sailing as I’d hope. Mazda’s beautiful 7-seater SUV was marred by its fancy Skyactiv-G Turbo as its temperature rose on the way up to Baguio. Now, almost a year after (and some technical explanation as to what happened), can the entry-level CX-9 vindicate its fancier AWD Touring (now Signature) sibling?

First Drive: 2020 Mazda CX-8 2.5 Skyactiv-G AWD

The story of the CX-8 is a rather unremarkable one. Mazda once had an MPV, the Mazda8, which was actually marketed with the tagline, “the idea of a sportscar – inherited by a minivan.” It was, in every sense of the word, a mom mobile that that very tagline was delivered by a middle-aged woman in Japan. But as the company shifted its attention to all things KODO and Skyactiv, they found themselves with an opportunity: should they make something pleasing to soccer moms or should they make a three-row SUV? Focused group studies and likely, simpler engineering costs dictated the latter, and thus, the CX-8 was born.

Review: 2020 Mazda CX-8 Signature 2WD

Mazda has been taking their approach to premium the same way the Germans have: plug very conceivable niche. It may not feel it, but the carmaker actually has five SUVs in its product range—that’s as many as Honda (three) and Subaru (two) combined. And though Toyota has seven, its price spread is rather large—P 3.967 million compared to Mazda’s P 1.65-million. With such a dizzying array of choices crammed into a small price bracket, where does the CX-8 fit into all this?

Mazda Philippines Elevates Three-Row SUVs with CX-8. Prices Start at P 2.290M (w/ 15 Photos, Specs)

This model is more than two years in the making. After “slipping out” during the press con at the CX-5’s Malaysian plant assembly roll out in 2017, people thought that the three-row Mazda CX-8 was sure to join the line-up in 2018. Then, nothing. Enter the first nine months of 2019, and still nothing. And then, it just happened. It rolled out of the assembly plant in October and now, here it is. Philippines, this is your 2020 Mazda CX-8 (read our first impressions, here).

Review: 2021 Mazda CX-8 AWD Exclusive

When Mazda Philippines launched the CX-8 mid-sized SUV, it served as an alternative to the typical pickup-based mid-sized SUV choices in the market. Priced at P 2.290-million, we extensively reviewed the CX-8 2WD Signature last year, proclaiming it to be the best balanced of Mazda’s CX line-up. But what if you wanted something more; something with all the bells-and-whistles? Well, for P 160,000 more, there’s this: the CX-8 AWD Exclusive.
