SsangYong Tivoli is Much Better than Ford EcoSport

Mr. Young Han Song, SsangYong’s Executive Managing Director is one straight talking corporate executive. After forging a partnership with SsangYong Berjaya Motor Philippines (SBMP) in January of this year, the partnership is starting to bear fruit with the local launch of four models: Korando, Rodius, Tivoli, and Tivoli XLV.

Review: 2017 Ford EcoSport Titanium vs SsangYong Tivoli Sport R

When SsangYong launched the Tivoli, the Korean carmaker boldly predicted that buyers will flock to their new crossover from the perennial segment favorite, the Ford EcoSport. A year on, this hasn’t gone to plan as the EcoSport continues to protect its turf while managing to increase its sales in the process. The question beckons: has SsangYong simply bitten more than it can chew? Will the Tivoli be relegated to being kicked to the curb in this sub-compact crossover turf war?

Review: 2018 SsangYong Tivoli XLV ELX 4WD

“The Power to Surprise” is a tagline used by one Korean carmaker and sadly, that’s not SsangYong. See, with the sort of vehicles they’ve been coming up with—well-designed, capable, great value for money, SsangYong’s the carmaker that has every right to use that slogan. Case in point is the 2018 Tivoli XLV, pretty much one of the better small crossovers money can buy today.

Review: 2019 SsangYong Tivoli Premium Sport

Admittedly, the SsangYong Tivoli was not a looker. When it appeared on my driveway, I nearly missed it, and walked right past. I suppose it did not help that Techno Grey was clearly not my color. Add to that, my first drive out in the little crossover made me eyeroll — the brakes were too soft and sensitive, making the car jerky; and, being only on a 1.6-liter engine, the power was not as responsive as I was used to. Day One—color me unimpressed.

SsangYong Philippines Offers Spare Tire to Replace Mobility Kit on Tivoli and Tivoli XLV

The SsangYong Tivoli is considered to be one of the best-valued crossovers in the market. However, there’s one big surprise that apparently hindered its success, at least based on what some keyboard warriors are saying: the spare tire, or more specifically, the lack of it.

SsangYong Moves to Build Advanced Engines

SsangYong Motors is remembered mostly for their tie-up with Mercedes-Benz producing products such as the MB100 (Istana) and Musso. Though that arrangement happened to span only three years (1991 to 93), it left an indelible mark on the company that remains with them until today. Moving forward from simple licensing agreements, SsangYong is inching towards a corporate vision of becoming the “most innovative and respected Korean automotive company”. Flush with cash from its acquisition by the Mahindra & Mahindra Group, SsangYong plans to expand its global footprint by selling 300,000 units globally.

First Drive: 2016 SsangYong Tivoli, Korando, and Rodius

Anyone of a certain age will remember SsangYong. Apart from a name that read like a typo, it was infamous for slapping on a German three-pointed star on its vehicles in the late 1990’s to early 2000’s. It died a natural death, whimpering out of existence as extinct as the animal namesake of one of their nameplates. That is, until now.

SsangYong Designs Now Are Inspired by Korea and Nature

In the past, SsangYong has made cars which were as visually challenging to understand as their nameplates: Rexton, Actyon, and Rodius. In fact, for decades, the brand seemed to look for inspiration from the West only to have the finished product look like something that was subjected to a Korean cultural blender. Well, SsangYong is putting that past behind them and now all eyes are on the double dragons and this time, it’s for a good reason.
