Everything You Need To Know About The 2024 Toyota Wigo (w/ Specs)

Toyota Motor Philippines has introduced one of its most important new models of the year: the all-new Wigo. As Filipinos seek to become more mobile, the Wigo has proven to be a success story for the country’s number one carmaker. The second-generation model aims to build on that solid foundation by getting a top-down redesign and more tech-features than ever before.

2014 Hyundai Grand i10 1.2 vs 2014 Toyota Wigo 1.0 G A/T

Oh my, how the world turns. Hyundai was once known for being value-for-money cars. They were solid but crude cars with a price tag that made it close to being disposable after a couple of years of use (or abuse). On the other hand, Toyota produced refined and quality cars which certainly cost more, but are seemingly built to survive a nuclear war. Today though, the world moves to a different beat. With the Wigo sub-compact Toyota has moved, for the first time in its Philippine history, way into the basic transportation genre; while Hyundai has leveled up several notches with its i10 (now known as the Grand i10). Has the automotive world turned upside down? Is the P 728,000 Hyundai Grand i10 1.2 really worth it against the P 534,000 Toyota Wigo 1.0 G? Well, it’s time to find out.

Officially launched just a few days ago in the Queen City of the South, Cebu, the Toyota Wigo is the Japanese automaker’s first foray into the sub B-segment category and the one that’s expected to lift Toyota’s Philippine sales past 90,000 vehicles annually (they’re currently doing 70,000-plus). With the come-on of being “Easy to Own, Easy to Drive, Easy to Enjoy”, the Wigo is aimed at first-time car buyers who want a no-nonsense vehicle that can fit their increasingly mobile and sophisticated lifestyle. Toyota is set to unveil the all-new Wigo this year, and they’re going the runabout way of doing so. Instead of launching it with the Daihatsu (Ayla) or Toyota badge, the automaker has selected Malaysia as its global debut market as the all-new Perodua Axia.

Review: 2014 Toyota Wigo 1.0G M/T

Photos by Ulysses Ang
Owning a brand-new car should be stress-free. No anxiety attacks when thinking about payments. No worries about reliability. No agonizing over fuel and maintenance costs. Toyota’s latest addition to their line-up, the Wigo, is promising just that: it’s all about easy-to-own, easy-to-drive, and easy-to-enjoy. But can it live up to the promise? I spent an entire week with the Wigo 1.0G M/T—the full-loaded model that doesn’t break the psychological P 500,000-mark (P 499,000 to be exact). Just how well does it perform? Read on.

First Drive: 2017 Toyota Wigo 1.0 G A/T

With a doubt, the launch of the Wigo in 2014 was a double-edged sword for Toyota in the Philippines. On one hand, if they get it right, it sees them expand to a new market dominated by Korean, Indian, and even Chinese car brands. On the other hand, get it wrong and you can bet these first-time car buyers will swear off owning a Toyota for the rest of their lives. Thankfully for Toyota (and tough luck for everyone else), it was a huge success. It moved more than 40,000 units and paved the way to first-time Toyota ownership for a lot of happy campers. And even before its rivals could respond, here comes a new one.

Review: 2021 Toyota Wigo 1.0 TRD S

Who would have thought? From merely being a market disruptor against the Chinese and Korean car brands, the Wigo has become one of the most important models for Toyota Motor Philippines. Last year alone, it moved close to 12,000 units—more than the Innova, Fortuner, or Rush. It is, for the most part, designed to attract first-time new car buyers—those either moving from old, used cars or those who’d otherwise be taking public transportation. As such, don’t expect it to be the fastest, cushiest, or most refined offering out there. This is unabashedly basic level motoring, but surprisingly enough, it’s a remarkably fine one.
