New Suzuki Alto 800 Leads in Affordability

People looking to buy their first car can drive home their new ride without spending big as Suzuki Philippines Inc. (SPH), the only integrated automobile and motorcycle company in the country, launches the all-new and very affordable subcompact car— the Alto 800.

Retailing at only P388,000.00 for the standard variant, owners get great value for their money as the all-new Alto 800 goes farther with  its 22.74 km/l average mileage, 11 percent more torque, and 15 percent more fuel-efficiency than the previous Alto.

SPH President Hiroshi Suzuki shares, “The launch of the Alto 800 in the Philippines underscores our commitment to bring fuel-efficient, comfortable, and affordable cars to this market.  We look forward to introducing more the Suzuki ‘Way of Life’ brand philosophy to the Filipinos by pioneering great-valued automobiles like the Alto 800.”

  2. I'd really really love to buy this car, it's the only one within my budget. But I'm seeing a lot of stalled Altos to consider it just a coincidence or isolated incident (plus one being towed, an Alto Gold).

  4. @ Ulyssses: Have you tried using this car? Any comments? I'm planning to buy a second car but I'm not willing to spend much nor take risks with second hand cars (because of the recent floods in the Metro). Thanks!

    1. If you ask my opinion, I'd probably go for the Toyota Wigo given it's great value for what you get.

That said, I haven't driven the Suzuki Alto 800. I was supposed to, but Suzuki Philippines has yet to confirm when I can try it out.

    1. 2009 Suzuki Celerio A/T Developed and manufactured in India by Maruti Suzuki, Suzuki's Indian subsidiary, the Celerio is Suzuki's much-awaited successor to its Alto subcompact city car. It is also known as the A-star, or Alto Celerio in other markets.

The design is a young, European-inspired concept as claimed by Rajesh Kumar Gogu and Saurabh Singh of Maruti Suzuki India, but it looks more like a fusion of a Citroen C1, a Kia Picanto, and a Hyundai i10; all of which it competes with in the European market and locally, with the exception of the Citroen.

Under the hood is a Euro-5 compliant, normally aspirated, 997cc lightweight three-cylinder aluminum K10B engine, which the manufacturer claims can go up to 19.59 kilometers per liter. Power output is rated 67ps at 6200rpm while pulling 90Nm at 3500rpm. Being primarily a city car, don't expect to be sprinted away by the engine, as it was engineered with economy in mind. It does, however, have decent power for its use. The evenly geared four-speed automatic transmission changes gears virtually without any shift shock.

Suspension is composed of front MacPherson struts and a three-link rigid rear suspension which provides decent car control. In the ride comfort department, it absorbs road bumps and ruts quite decently despite being a short wheelbase car. A well set-up brake system combined with the car's lightness provides very good stopping power for the car.

Being small and compact, the Celerio does offer adequate space for four average-sized Asians. The boot can fit 110 liters of cargo, but folding the rear seats pushes it up to 345 liters. Power amenities come in the form of doorlocks, power front windows, keyless entry and electric power steering. The driver, however, does not have access to the passenger window control. An MP3/WMA capable CD player provides in-car entertainment with 6 speakers.

The Celerio comes big in safety features as it is equipped with modern active safety equipment such as anti-lock brakes with electronic brakeforce distribution and brake assist, and dual front airbags. While passive safety features were side impact beams and child seat anchors. However, it was only given 3 stars by the Euro NCAP (Europe's vehicle safety testing agency) for the locally available setup.

Indeed big things come in small packages; the Celerio is packed with power and safety features with a dash-mounted tachometer to boot, all uncommon in its segment. As the old adage goes, you get what you pay for. In this case, the Php569,000 retail gets you all these added features that come with the car which might make the car seem bit unattractive to the budget conscious. Although this car seems boring for my liking, it may however excite those who value frugality. Its also an alternative for the Alto buyer but want a more stylish vehicle to get them from point A to point B.

  10. We have the Alto 800 standard for 1 year now. No problems so far. super sulit. Naiikot na namin siya. Cavite-Ilocos-Cagayan-Isabela-NV-NE-Mla-Cavite, with no problem at all. Fuel efficiency is 24km/L pag nasa province na na diretso ang drive. But we use it everyday to work Cavite-Makati, 17km/L normal traffic conditions. Kung 2 kayo pumapasok sa Makati, mas mura pa gas nyo kesa mag commute. For the budget conscious like us, this car makes us happy.

  20. as far as the parts are concern I believe they have the parts available in the market since this car is one of the affordable subcompact cars (aside from EON and Spark). I own one as well and believe it or not I drove it to Baguio with 6 adults passengers (3 adults (big built) at the back and 2 (small built) infront including me). of course I have to turn of the AC when we reach Kenon Road to compensation on the engine power. As for the fuel consumption, indeed it can reach 18-20Km/L, well it also depends on your driving and traffic condition.

  29. Mine is Granite gray. Daming nagsasabing cute. For me, alto is very convenient for singles/couple only. Not for family. Kasi 5 seaters lang sya. 3 sa likod. 2 sa harap including the driver. So pag long ride gusto nyo dapat 3 lang nasa likod. Pero more than that... Mapapagod yung makina. Kaya i suggest Pang-city driving lang si alto. Pwede din naman syang long driving basta 2-4 persons lang laman :) kaya sya isabela man o baguio :)

It's not a good car, kung being practical lang mas maganda ng bumili ng car na that could last long term.
