Review: Chevrolet Spin 1.5 LTZ

Photos by Ulysses Ang
The Asian Utility Vehicle or AUV was once the staple of car manufacturers in the Philippines. With a lucrative tax incentive and the Filipino’s penchant for traveling with their extended kin made them the proverbial “king of the road”. Today, AUVs have taken a different role altogether. With the incentives gone, car manufacturers have opted to go Multi-Purpose Vehicle or MPV instead. Meanwhile, the AUVs have become mini-MPVs of sorts; slotting below entry-level MPVs in both size and price. But don’t let that repositioning fool you: the AUV is still a sought after segment; focusing on Filipino families, who want a 7-seater, but can’t or don’t want to spend anything above one million pesos. Besides price, AUVs are also known for their small displacement engines and cheap ownership cost. Given this formula, Chevrolet has upped the AUV game and has gone a step further by giving style and sophistication through the Spin.

Developed specifically for emerging markets, the first thing you notice with the Spin is how compact it is. With a wheelbase of just 2,620 mm and an overall length of just 4,260 mm, it’s no longer than a typical compact sedan. But this is where Chevrolet designers start to get crafty. By reducing the overhangs and adopting a formal squared-off roofline with a large greenhouse, the Spin looks like a 90th percentile MPV. More than just being practical, the Spin is also stylish and modern-looking. The front-end is cute with its large, expressive headlamps and the smiling dual-port grille. The front bumpers also visually cut an aerodynamic profile. At the side, the Spin doesn’t rely on any sort of door molding; instead it has a strong crease on the doors sandwiched by two wheel flares that extend onto the doors. The Spin’s rearview is more functional, but the central cutout for the door handle and the mudguard “lip” on the bumper add a dose of style.

The tall roofline and large windows already give a great feeling of space, but Chevrolet designers went a step further and used light toned plastics and fabrics to give the airiest cabin experience possible. Going with a two-toned hue, the Spin has a welcoming, family-friendly atmosphere. The plastics are hard to the touch, but they’re well-textured and solidly put together. The seats feel rich and opulent, though they seem to attract dark-colored lint, so regular vacuuming is a must. The dashboard design itself maximizes available space by making it as flat and canting upward as much as possible. Yet, there’s a wealth of storage and cubby holes (22 in total) including one of the largest door pockets you’ll ever see in a car.

In terms of interior space, all three rows of the Spin is certified Average Filipino friendly (average being 160 cm or so in height). The front and second row seats offer nice support making this a great car to drive or to be driven in. The driver has the added comfort of a 4-way adjustable seat and a tilt-adjustable steering wheel. The three-spoke steering wheel itself is nice to grip. Those in the third row will have to be content with a slightly knees-up position but the adjustable headrests and recline helps make trips more comfortable. With all three rows up there’s barely enough space to even fit a duffel bag, but fold and flip the third row bench forward (it locks into place via a crude cord tied to the second row headrest), the luggage space grows to fit airport luggage. To fit longer items such as stand fans and golf bags, the Spin’s second row folds flat in a 60/40 split-fold.

Getting into the Spin’s driver’s seat, you’re welcomed by Chevrolet’s familiar motorcycle-inspired gauge cluster. The large digital speedometer and large analog tachometer (that swings up on ignition) add a sporty style without compromising on legibility. The Spin’s instrument panel is surprisingly full-featured with a multi-function trip computer and even adjustable dimmer control. The rest of the driving controls are well-placed with the shifter, hand brake, stalks, and knob-type light control all within easy reach. The only two exceptions are the knobs for the air conditioning which require an extra reach to adjust and the asymmetrical design of the radio face which requires a good look-see to operate.

Though the availability of a small 1.3-liter turbo diesel is the main reason why the Spin grabbed headlines, the 1.5-liter gasoline engine is a sensible choice too, especially if you can’t or won’t drive stick. With 109 horsepower and 141 Nm of torque, the Spin’s S-TEC III (though Chevrolet Philippines claims it’s an ECOTEC engine) is quiet and refined given this vehicle’s class. It idles unobtrusively and even lets out a motorcycle-like note as the revs climb up. Floor the throttle though, and the Spin’s cabin vibrates in unison with the engine creating an uncomfortable gurgling sound at around 2,000 rpm. The Spin’s clearly made more for city driving instead of highway driving as the 6-speed automatic shifts up at the soonest possible time. As the speeds climb past 80 km/h, the Spin’s already past 2,000 rpm on 6th gear and as a result it struggles to reach triple digit speeds. Also, fuel economy’s isn’t really mind-blowing, resulting in just 8.4 km/L in the city.

Based off the platform that also underpins the Chevrolet Sonic, the Spin is remarkably refined. In fact, it drives pretty much like a wagon as opposed to a cumbersome AUV. It exhibits excellent straight line stability and remains quiet even at high speed cruising. At lower speeds, it’s very compliant around Manila. It also feels very nimble not only because of its small exterior dimensions but also because of its excellent all-around visibility. Even without the aid of parking sensors, the Spin is easily slotted into the tiniest of parking space. On the flipside, the steering is somewhat heavy and the Spin does have a strong urge to understeer through corners. The body roll is also very noticeable because of the softy-sprung suspension.

Priced at P 838,888, the Chevrolet Spin is actually very good value for money. Not only does it deliver car-like levels of driving and refinement, it comes fully loaded with pretty much everything a modern Filipino family could wish for. Standard on the Spin 1.5 LTZ are features such as variable intermittent wipers, a multi-function trip computer, front and rear fog lamps, dual air conditioning, a CD/MP3 audio system with USB and Bluetooth hands-free capabilities, dual SRS airbags, and anti-lock brakes with electronic brakeforce distribution. The only glaring thing missing are front height adjustable seatbelts.

The Chevrolet Spin, especially in its 1.5 LTZ guise lifts the AUV segment from merely being considered as the mere alternative when it comes to buying a family MPV. It’s definitely priced and featured to sell, but above all, the Chevrolet Spin shows that style and sophistication need not be expensive.

  1. how's the temperature on the 3rd row of this mpv?

    1. Temperature of the third row? Given that the test drive unit doesn't have tint, it was a bit hot on any row. Rest assured though, the a/c is more than adequate to handle Manila heat. Remember, this is smaller than say, the Innova, so less area to cool.

    2. Sorry for the kinda misleading english. I was referring sir the room temperature since, i dunno, if it has an a/c vent or fan blower from the second row.

    3. Ah okay...the Chevrolet Spin has a dual manual air conditioning with ceiling-mounted vents for all rows. Hope that answers your question.

    4. Sir Ulysses Ang.

I'm on the way of scouting a car. At nakita ko na best choice ko ang spin however, medjo nag second thought ako sa consumption ang gas which 8.4 km/liter. A bit expensive.

    5. Try the 1.3-liter diesel if you're concerned about fuel consumption. You do have to drive a manual though.

  3. Hi Sir, how about the load capacity of spin (7 persons) and size of its body in relation to the its engine size (1.5 DSL M/T)?? Is the 1.5 engine size perfectly matches its maximum load capacity, in the long run??? am about to buy my first car and considering the Chevy Spin...thanks..

    1. The 1.5-liter gasoline is so-so in terms of performance, refinement, and fuel efficiency. The 1.3-liter diesel fares way better but I haven't tried it out yet. Of course, the diesel only comes with a manual.

  4. Hi has anyone tried using this fully loaded, on climbs along ternate to nasugbu or, the route to laguna through teresa to mabitac. My current sedan can handle those but i'm thinking this might not due to engine size compared to load capacity. Thanks

  13. I'm sorry but I have to strongly disagree with the comment just above made by Ms. Unknown. We just recently bought a Chevrolet Spin 1.5 LTZ and we are more than satisfied with the performance of our car. The review written by Mr. Ang was accurate and objective. I also do not believe Ms. Unknown's claim that the dealer (I'm assuming she was referring to Chevrolet) did not offer assistance in servicing her Spin. In fact, most Chevrolet Ph vehicles carry a 3 to 5-year warranty. If your car was indeed a lemon, I'm sure you are covered by the newly passed Lemon Law. Truth be told, I would highly recommend the Spin over any other AUV or MPV in the market. Cheers!

Childlock ko na lang daw yung doors if I feel di sya secured. Lahat ng spin daw ganun. Naisip ko, what if someone opens the passenger door from the inside while the car is moving/parking... isn't that dangerous?

    6. ganyan talaga ang design nyan sir. sana tinignan nyo muna bago nyo binili para di kayo nagsisisi

7 people on board papunta quezon zigzag, kaya naman just don't expect na parang FWD ang lakas. 7 people sa highway 12-14km/L, sa city mild traffic 9-10km/L, sa super trafic as in parang naglalakad 6-8km/L, Tatlo kaming nakasakay, sa highway pinakamataas ko from cabuyao to magallanes 16.4km/L. Fold the 3rd and 2nd row then buksan mo back door, sarap humiga at mag relax under the tree shades.

  16. malaks mag produce ng brake dust ng spin namin any solution to this please?

  17. Oo nga sir daming daming dumi ng mags sa harap because of break dust. Is this a sign of defect ?

    ReplyDelete
  18. nakakadiscourage namn po bumili ng spin, eto pa nmn sana ang balak ko bilhin ngayong december 2014, kaso sa mga review nyo, nakakadismaya n mangyari sa akin ang mga defects and problems n naexperience nyo, so i suppose i just choose another option at magchecheck ulit sa mga forums at comments like this, sa mga mayari n so far walang problem, bka di nyo pa nasasagad sa paggamit ang sasakyan nyo,ang naoobserbahan ko lng ay almost lahat ng may problema sa spin ay under running hours pa, meaning mababa ang kinakailangan na maintenance interval ng spin which implies costly maintenance. at hindi porket may warranty eh okay na, tapos hnd ok sa fuel economy

    ReplyDelete
Is it worth buying? I am planning to buy this December pero mukhang maraming reklamo. Thanks.

    ReplyDelete
  20. Kung gusto mo ay malakas humatak na pang 7 persons, go for an SUV or innova. If you want to switch from sedan to a small van from time to time with driving comfort in mind try the SPIN automatic (gas 1.5 LTZ). Mas matipid sya sa dating kong 1.3 na car base on long journey consumption (6-8hrs driving 12km/L against 11KM/L). sa traffic parehas lang 6-9KM/L. If this is your first car try toyota brand, if you have good experience in car maintenance and knows the basic capabilities of a certain car features, this is a nice car to have.

    ReplyDelete
  21. To the person who wrote just above my post, thank you. My brother warned me about buying this car, that I should check on the reviews first. My choice is this over the Innova but reading on with all other reviews, I finally made a choice. Bakit nga mas marami ang naka Innova kaysa Chevvy. I wanted a distiction, to be different from the many so I had insisted on the Spin til I read the reviews. Sometimes in a brand, the more users, the more wiser buyers.

    2. Actually, this is normal. These new European door locks will really open even if you tug it from the inside. It's the same as Ford's for instance.

Engaging the childproof locks will prevent the rear doors from opening. Is this dangerous for children? Take note... It's good practice for children below 12 to sit in the backseat for safety.

  38. may test drive naman ang chevy. Before buying test drive muna. ask all about the car.

Last month ginamit ko siya from Antipolo Rizal to one of the famous resort in San Fernando La Union. The next day nagamit ko siya from La Union to Baguio. It is loaded with 4 kids and 4 adults at may baggage pa on the roof. So far we safely return back home in Antipolo.

  43. I bought my spin ltz automatic gasoline last yr and it took me 2 months (march ako nag-pay ng down, i got my unit on may, not to mention i wanted a manual-diesel but andami nilang alibi na hindi available and matatagalan so i got the auto-gas). So sa good sides muna, satisfied naman ako sa unit ko. On weekdays office-haus lang naman travel ko, ni traffic, uphill and downhill na sementado ang way to my office, rough road harap ng haus ko and tiny space ang parking sa bahay but my unit can manage. On weekends i go on a roadtrip here in iloilo and guimaras and na manage naman since konti lng naman rough roads. Most of the time loaded din because i have some merchandise na dala, plus 4 passengers most of the time. When i got my unit, wala man lang nag explain ng things that i'd have to make sure para sulit naman gas consumption and convenience ko while using. And dahil newbie ako, i bumped my car after a few days, and parang ok naman sana ang claim ko with the insurance. I just started to notice na nung may mga questions na ako after several weeks of driving and i was following up my insurance claim na pabaya na ang agent ko. Then when I checked with the bank to pay and also check my insurance claim (bpi auto-loan with insurance), hindi pa na process nung chev ang papers ko so yung claim ko was not processed by bpi pa. So may 2014 ko nakuha ang unit ko and same month ako nagka road accident pero july na na file ng chevrolet iloilo ang loan and insurance claim ko. Medyo tinamad na din ako mag follow up kase andaming alibi and i was also busy, so last week of nov na dumating ang spareparts. I told them i will have my car repaired na lng on dec.19 when i leave the country since i wont be needing it. Nung pinasok na sa servicing ang car, they recorded the km and i remember my gas was 3/4 full. After 3wks ko na binalikan ang car after my vacation, and was so disappointed na paubos na ang gasolina. Their alibi was they took my car from their main office to their service center twice (max 15 km total) so dun daw naubos ang gas ko. When i complained they said at that time they will take note lang daw dahil wala ang supervisor and the supervisor will call me na lng daw. But no one called. Until a friend of mine said contact ko daw ang senior supervisor na nila dun, and when i went there and we investigated, we found out they used my car without my permission. So they promised me that they will have the supervisor from the servicing suspended but til now they did not update me of the status. Then when LTO announced na mag penalty na sa walang plate, i called chev and asked if they followed up LTO already but they had incompetent answers even when i was explaining to them i live far from LTO and it is their job to follow up as that's included in their promo package. But since parang walang kwenta ang sagot nila, ako na lng ang nag follow up considering i live 50km away from the city pa, plus the mahabang pila sa lto. And then just today when ayaw umandar ng car ko (sabi ng office driver namin battery daw) i called chev again, a rude customer service agent will not even assist in asking their servicing unit to contact me dahil walang landline ang office nila doon. I had to call again the senior supervisor who reffered me to another person who said an agent from their "car rescue team" will call me pero hindi naman tumawag. Parang ok naman sana performance ng car ko (i understand pwdeng mag drain agad ang battery, so aside from that wala naman ako naging prob sa unit), but my problem has always been with the incompetent and lazy chevrolet agents here in ILOILO CITY!! And i'm posting this complain here because kahit in a good tone, sarcastic tone, or demanding tone ka pa makipag usap sa mga taga chev dito sa amin, walang ka kwenta-kwenta talaga. Pinag tatakpan lang nila ang isa't-isa. Hay...

Napakbulok nila as in.

  45. We got our Spin LTZ gas last Aug. 2014 and so far we are lucky enough that we did not encounter any problems with "Spinido" and we are very satisfied with its performance. Na-drive ko lang cia during my vacation last Dec.-Jan. Inikot namin ang Taal Lake from Sta. Teresita, Batangas to Sto. Tomas (Padre Pio Parish Church), then to Tanauan, Talisay, Laurel, Agoncillo, Lemery, Taal and back to Sta. Teresita. 6 adults umaahon kami past the 2000 rpm mark using auto mode. Matipid cia, nag-register cia once 24km/l sa Startoll, 4 adults naman kami using manual mode. Average fc sa highway nasa 15km/l. Mixed fc nasa 12-13km/l. Regular route namin e from Bacoor, Cavite to Sta. Teresita, Batangas using Startoll or via Aguinaldo to Tagaytay via Payapa road...

I found chev spin and the price is ok. 61. 3years spin user. ngayon lang nasira ung aircon naming, cooling coil. repair cost is 5.5k sa frigid kamuning. the best repair duon. I don't rely sa casa kasi matagal, ska mahal. ang technique ay kumuha nang piyesa sa casa, then pagawa maintenance sa shell mechanics. overall OK ang spin for me, city drive is 25 to 33km/liter at 1.3 diesel manual. ang saya, kasi lagi kami nasa labas. ang isang fulltank around 50-55liters cost 1.3pesos lang. abot na yun nang mahigit isang buwan samin. at least once a week i check air pressure at 35psi. we travel at least 500km per week. considering the traffic at tengga sa sasakyan kasi pag nagsusundo sa wife ko at mga bata. we travelled ilocos and Cagayan madaming beses na, ska south. from QC to Cagayan I spent 600 pesos on diesel balik fulltank na,. that almost 800km of travel, hataw pa yun my speed hindi bumababa nang 100km/h tapos max ko at least 160km/h medaling araw kasi, kaya niya mag 180 I tried it sa startoll batangas nuon pero hindi ko na inulit kasi hindi naman kailangan magtulin... I often change oil and filters, tapos every month pinapabugahan ko yung air filter and aircon filter sa shell 50 pesos lang plus tip. wala akong masabi sa spin sulit na sulit. swak sa Pilipinas lifestyle nang family na praktikal. I want to try yung trailblazer next or fortuner na bago kasi fullypaid na itong spin ko I went for 3years lang 22k/mo sulit na sulit.

  62. saka tip po sa chevy spin diesel user.. wag po kayo mag kakarga sa paiba iba na diesel class at provider. kasi sa experience ko, pag nagkarga ako sa petron, rhen shell, namamalya siya for sometime then after ilang minutes OK na. parang nagbabago yung idling. pero binasa ko sa manula may safe adjustment ung diesel calibration nya kaya siguro ganun. pero less hassle ska safer engine magkarga lang nang low grade diesel fuel sa isang suking gasolinahan nalang. don't go for special diesel class :-)

Normally it will take 3 ton4 weeks na nasa Chervoler Service Center because of the parts na iniintay pa. This morning while driving our car suddenly stopped ib the middle of the road. Praise God it was traffic kaya mabagal lang ang takbo namin. The car power suddenly shut down and it took 15mins na bumalik yung power ng sasakyan. Naiuwi pa namin then nung ioopen na ulit ayaw na ulit magpower on. Kakakuha lang namin ng kotse from the service center last Saturday 2days ago dahil sa nasira yubg aircon hindi lumalamig and now mas lalung nasira dahil bigla nalang namamatay ang makina. If you plan to buy spin please think again.

Since then, it has been brought to Chevy for repairs 10x and Chevy has now refused to honor the warranty. It has not offered to repair the vehicle, replace it or refund. We're filing a case now.

  69. My Chevy spin 1.5 LTZ gasoline auto trans, Is now 4 year old. In about a year old, after when I took it from the dealer, I heard abnormal hissing sound.this will happen when you revs up or during auto shifting of gears. I reported it many (4) times already but they cannot really identify the cause of the problem. Their service is very frustrating considering they only have 1 available service center here in cebu and our house is quite far away from their location. I could not imagine how slow and un systematic they were. This car i got had plenty issues not mentioning them all causing me enough stress,so if anybody here a planning to buy on any of their car,you better think it all over again bec Chevy after sales service is terrible.
