A Class Higher: All-New Mercedes-Benz C-Class Now in the Philippines (w/ Complete Brochure, Video)

Mercedes-Benz’s best-selling model globally, the C-Class, has received its most dynamic and radical change yet as it aims to become the benchmark in the premium mid-sized sedan category. Indeed, the German automaker is promising that the all-new C-Class (W205) is now “one class higher” in performance, agility, safety, and comfort. In a jam-packed launch last week, Mercedes-Benz Philippines through its exclusive distributor, Auto Nation Group, Inc. launched the C 200 AMG. This will soon be joined by other engine variants and design lines in the near future including the Avantgarde and Exclusive line.

Dimensionally, the all-new C-Class is larger in every direction compared to its predecessor. It now sits on a 2,840-millimeter wheelbase (+80) with a length that’s grown by 95 millimeter (4,686 millimeters). It’s also slightly wider at 1,810 millimeters (+40). More than just larger and roomier, the all-new C-Class also boasts of a larger trunk space, now at 480 liters. Though larger, it has gone through an extensive weight reduction program, shedding up to 100 kilograms in the process.

Aesthetically, the all-new C-Class showcases a striking and clear departure from its predecessor. Taking on the design cues of the flagship S-Class, the all-new C-Class features precise lines and sculpted surfaces that interplay with light and shadow. The long hood and setback passenger compartment produce a well-balanced character that’s characteristic of Mercedes-Benz sedans. Like in previous C-Class, the all-new model features two distinct front ends. The Exclusive line features the classic radiator grille with the Mercedes-Benz star sitting on the hood. Meanwhile, the Avantgarde and AMG lines have the three-pointed star located centrally in the radiator grille.

Though equipped with standard headlights, the C-Class comes available with two energy-saving LED lighting configurations: static and dynamic. The latter, known as the LED Intelligent Light System, create the model’s new distinct and characteristic appearance at night. The rear tail lamps feature LED lighting across the range.

Like its striking exterior, the all-new Mercedes-Benz C-Class’s interior is bold and modern that combines sensuality and clarity. The C-Class’s new center console, inspired by the brand’s line of sports cars, features flowing lines with a large one-piece center console panel. A centrally-positioned free-standing display is the eye-catching feature on the C-Class. The standard screen size is 7 inches but grows to 8.4 inches when COMAND Online in specified. The five round A/C vents lend a sporty flair while ARTICO man-made leather inserts on the instrument panel create a warm, welcoming feel. The interior makes use of energy-saving LED lighting. The C-Class also features an optional Ambience Lighting feature with three user-selectable colors: sonar (amber), polar (ice blue), and neutral (white).

Controlling the wealth of infotainment options, Mercedes-Benz is making use of a smartphone inspired touchpad interface. The touchpad permits letters, numbers, and special characters to be entered in handwriting in any language supported by the standard Audio 20 system or COMAND Online. The touchpad also returns a clear tactile feedback to make it conducive to use. A new heads-up display is also available.

For audiophiles, the C-Class comes equipped with a Burmester surround sound system. The high-fidelity sound system outputs audio via a variety of sources such as Bluetooth, iPod, USB, CD, or radio.

Underneath, the all-new C-Class boasts of a hybrid aluminum-steel body. Not only does this reduce weight, but it also improves the C-Class’s crash safety as well as increase rigidity. Along with the weight reduction, this car features a slippery co-efficient of drag at 0.24—a benchmark in the premium mid-sized category. The suspension features a new 4-Link independent front and 5-Link independent rear for agile handling without compromises to comfort. DIRECT CONTROL with its selective damping system is standard equipment while air suspension (AIRMATIC) is an available option).

At launch, the C-Class is available solely in C 200 guise. This equates to having Mercedes-Benz’s 2.0-liter 4-cylinder engine with 184 horsepower and 300 Nm of torque. Equipped with BlueDIRECT (direct injection technology) and automatic idle start/stop, the C 200 is Euro 6 compliant. The C 200 is expected to be joined by the C 250. Also with a 2.0-liter displacement, the C 250 has 211 horsepower and 350 Nm of torque. Both models are equipped with Mercedes-Benz’s 7-speed automatic (7G-TRONIC PLUS) as standard.

The all-new 2014 Mercedes-Benz C-Class starts at P 3,550,000 for the C 200 Avantgarde, P 3,880,000 for the C 200 AMG, and tops out at P 3,980,000 for the C 250 AMG. Auto Nation Group will display the all-new C-Class at the upcoming Philippine International Motor Show on September 18 to 21 at the World Trade Center.
