2015 Mazda6 Sports Wagon: What's the Difference? (w/ Specs)

Mazda Philippines just brought out the all-new Mazda6 Sports Wagon. And there’s no denying it’s a thing of beauty. It’s certainly a different choice than your typical luxury crossover or executive sedan. Mazda Philippines President Steven Tan says, “It’s like you combined the best elements of the Mazda6 sedan and the CX-5.” You can’t say it any better.

Plus, if you’re in the market for a Japanese executive wagon/tourer/hatchback or whatever else you want to call it, it’s your only choice. With the demise of its most direct competitor, the Mazda6 Sports Wagon is the last man standing. So what difference to warrant the additional P 10,000? (P 1,795,000 versus P 1,785,000).

At first glance, it looks like the 6 Sports Wagon is simply the Mazda6 sedan with the roofline continued all the way to the back. Ah, those eyes just fooled you. In fact, the Sports Wagon sits on a shorter wheelbase: 2,750 mm versus 2,830 mm. It’s also a tad taller 4,865 mm versus 4,800 mm, but that’s probably because of the roof rails. It’s also a bit wider: 1,480 mm versus 1,450 mm.

The difference in dimensions, according to Mazda, is simply because the Mazda6 Sports Wagon is designed primarily with the European market in mind while the sedan has to satisfy the North American market. And everyone knows that Uncle Sam loves size. So, thankfully, Philippine buyers want the freedom of choice and this market is one of the few in the entire world to get both body styles.

Under the hood, both the Mazda6 sedan and Sports Wagon get the 2.5-liter Skyactiv-G with 188 horsepower and 250 Nm of torque. But, the Sports Wagon is a tad heavier: 1,491 kg versus 1,444 kg. But what’s 47 kilograms between siblings? Plus, the smaller wheelbase does return a much more nimble chassis with a 5.5-meter turning radius for the Sports Wagon versus 5.6 meters for the sedan.

Visually, aside from the obvious, the Mazda6 Sports Wagon is differentiated by a unique lighting signature (see image above) that actually outlines the front grille and then sweeps into the front headlights. Therefore, when you spot the large Mazda wing in your rear view mirrors at night, you immediately know it’s the Mazda6 Sports Wagon.

The rest of the car though is largely the same so you get the same Adaptive LED headlights, i-ACTIVSENSE, and the 11-speaker Bose sound system. Of course, a full test drive is needed to actually see if there’s a discernible difference apart from the body style. Still, for those wanting the full specs, just click the image below. 1. I dunno.. Even with a badass front, the wagon form seems kinda dorky...

  2. Wagons or estates or avants are preferred in Europe. It offers the nimbleness and handling of a sedan but offers better interior space. Kudos to Mazda for bringing something new to the local market. The previous generation Legacy GT wagon was a success, in some ways, as you can see a lot of them on the road. Maybe Mazda took notice and decided they can corner such a market with the Mazda6 wagon.
