Subaru Foresters Go Off The Beaten Path

Who says crossovers can’t handle a real-life off-road trail? Subaru just proved naysayers wrong when they brought bone stock Foresters, in both turbo and non-turbo trims, to the first-ever X-Mode drive that brought their compact crossovers from  San Juan to through some rough terrain eventually ending up at the Daraitan River in Tanay, Rizal.

The highly experiential activity, open to both the motoring media and Forester owners, showcases some of the leading feature of the country’s best-selling compact crossover. Chief among them is the generous 220-millimeter ground clearance and 500-millimeter water wading depth. Of course, this is joined by the 23.0-degree approach, 21.0-degree ramp breakover, and 25.0-degree departure angles. These figures are certainly are much more adept at handling off-road trails compared to other vehicles in its class (see chart below).

More than just the design though, the secret of the Forester is in its unique mechanical architecture that makes it a cut above the rest in handling difficult terrain. Where other crossovers fear to tread, it remains a confident vehicle thanks first to the Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive (S-AWD) system that reduces mechanical power loss from the engine to the wheels. Next, the Boxer engine reduces the center of gravity meaning it has a lesser tendency to tip when traversing steep terrain.

The main highlight though is X-Mode. First introduced in the current-generation Forester, X-Mode coordinates the engine, transmission, AWD, and brakes enabling it to safely drive through any terrain. It also re-configures the Vehicle Dynamics Control (VDC), traction control, and enables Hill Descent Control. Hardcore SUVs may be more capable than the Forester, but none can do it quite as efficiently or easily than a Forester.

Subaru, through its exclusive Philippine distributor, Motor Image Pilipinas, aims to continue doing activities such as the X-Mode Drive in order to provide a venue that highlights the capability of Subaru vehicles in a safe manner. Indeed, it’s in these sorts of activities where owners can appreciate what makes Subaru, a Subaru.

  1. And the winner is the everest! Just add 200k from the forester's price, and u get a nice looking, full of features you can imagine, diesel, body on frame SUV. plus its got a locking differential

    1. Well, not all of us are willing to drive large SUVs every single day. Hence I did put the Everest into the comparative mix here. But it shows the capabilities of a compact crossover like the Forester.

    2. you are right sir!
we almost bought a forester, but went to the trailblazer, almost same price.
couldn't be more happier. Diesel FTW!

    3. well you are right sir Ulysses, but the size difference of the two is small. plus even though the everest is larger, it has a host of safety features, like adaptive cruise control, lane keep, blind spot monitoring, and active auto park assist. its kinda strange why subaru did not even put the "eyesight" technology on the TOTL Forester.

    4. You know, that's a good question. With mid-sized SUVs now becoming more and more high tech, crossovers like the Forester could use more cutting edge tech. From my understanding, Eyesight is an expensive feature... But worth it, but at the very least, it'll be a cool conversation piece.

    5. 3rd-world pickup-based SUVs like the Everest shouldn't be included in this comparo.

    6. Don't compare your pathetic crude 3rd world SUVs to a 1st world vehicle like the Forester. Ang lalakas ng mga loob nitong mga taong to.

Both the trailblazer and everest are pitiful when compared to the forester so I don't know where you people are coming at.

    7. E ano naman kong 1st world kotse mo kung ta3 world ang laman ng utak mo.

Terms like "1st world vehicle" or "3rd world vehicle" has really nothing to do with actual performance or actual "greatness" of a car. That's why there are actual tests dones to these vehicles. It's funny how some people attach nifty slogans like this idiot (Anony Aug 9, 2015 11:19 PM) to these cars or SUVs just to advance their racist points.

    8. Nope. 3rd world vehicles are really inferior. Performance, emission, comfort, safety etc. are all superior in 1st world vehicles like the mazda cx-5 and subaru forester.

The only reason why your kind probably buys these 3rd world SUVs is because you never even heard of the term "family planning" up until maybe now at this point while you are reading this. That's it, extra seats and slightly better flood fording capability are all the benefits you're going to get if you purchase a 3rd world vehicle.

    9. If so called first world and third world vehicles were put on the table, it's a toss up. Each car maker will have a car able to trump another car and so on. Mazda and Subaru's designs were influenced by other car's designs. Labels are just that labels. Subaru's AWD and Mazda's Soul aren't even perfect. Later, it will be boring and it will be back on the drawing board. Thats why we have review websites like this and that's why designs evolve. What has family planning got to do with it? You better pull your head out of your arse since you're not making any sense. One thing is for sure, we're all getting the picture that you're driving a so called first world car in order to compensate for your really tiny brain and inferiority complex.

      Delete
    10. To the freaking car racist: Each time you drive and step out of your so called first world Subaru or Mazda, always remember that there are people out there who knows that your just driving one in order to compensate for your tiny brain and severe inferiority complex.

    11. The lack of knowledge in family planning leads to increased amount of children. More children = more seats needed in a car. That's why your kind needs to stop making babies, control your urge for fuck's sake so your future kin can stop buying these 3rd world crap SUVs. The grass is greener on the other side, so as early as now let me tell you once you've opened your mind and tried these 1st world vehicles, you'll never go back to those bulky and unrefined 3rd world SUVs.

    12. As expected, an idiot like you wouldn't comprehend what I said. I pity you. I truly do.

Let me explain, probinsyanos, squatters and the likes such as yourself do not control the urge to procreate children. As a consequence, when buying vehicles, you prioritize space and number of seats instead of safety, performance and etc. You chose the 3rd world SUV instead of a 1st world vehicle not because you want to but because you need to. If only you had the willpower to control your babymaking urges then you'd probably be driving a 1st world car now.

Salamas.

    14. Yup. These 3rd world SUV patronizers are so stubborn and ignorant. We're educating them yet they keep resisting the gift of knowledge that we are selflessly giving to these poor souls..

Kaya nga doon pa lang sa pagbili ng 3rd world SUV, alam mo na agad takbo ng mga utak nila. Doon pa lang, may parang may kaunting sayad na.

      Delete
    15. hahaha! mga comment very funny, lahat naman ng cars maganda. eh! kung may sayad nga ang gumagamit ay talagang hindi. It's and every cars there's a purpose.

  2. Uly should be upfront and say if Subaru is sponsoring this site, I see Subaru banner ads and PR releases every time I visit this site. So how much engine oil did the Foresters consume for this trip? 1L every 2500kms. is "normal" for these boxer engines :P.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Yes, Subaru does advertise on the site, but so do Ford, Tata, Mitsubishi, and Nissan to name a few.

I don't know how much oil the FA20DIT would consume, but my personal experience with the FB20 (non-turbo) Forester, I haven't come across any oil consumption issue. And I've done around 27,000 kilometers in them.

I actually just change oil once a year! (I'm cheap).

Buy this if you miss maintaining a 2-stroke motorcycle engine... :P

From page 11-10 of the Subaru owner's manual:

"Some engine oil will be consumed while driving... you should check your oil at least every 2nd fuel fill-up and change your engine oil more frequently. If your oil consumption rate is greater than 1 quart every 1,200 miles or 1 liter every 2,000 kilometers, contact your Subaru dealer... "

In short, oil consumption of 1 Liter every 2,000 kilometers is considered "normal" for these boxer engines. QED

      Delete
    3. If its 1 liter every 2,000 kilometers, then the Subaru dealer should be contacted. You would not contact your dealer for anything normal that's happening about your car. "Hey Subaru dealer, odometer just turned 2k and 1 liter of oil is consumed, FYI!"

      Delete
    4. Kaya nga "normal" nga daw sa Subaru boxer engines yung ganung kalakas lumaklak ng langis. Meaning every 8000km. on the odo it's as if you've completely changed oil na (I'm assuming the engine needs around 4L to operate normally). I've never had a non-Subaru engine consume that much oil. Check how much you lost next time you pull out the dipstick. I'm pretty sure it's way below 1L from the last time you topped up. That's the inherent problem with these boxer engines that the fanb0is won't tell you.

  3. Sir Uly can you confirm other the wading depth of the other two crossovers? thanks sir :)

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Neither Honda nor Mazda want to issue confirmed water wading depth figures. However, anecdotal from owners say the CR-V does about 350 mm while the Mazda, around 350 to 400.

  4. though not in the same category, still the best 4x4 around is the Jimny. It even trumps the patrol and land cruiser in versatility among other things..

    ReplyDelete
  5. Suzuki Jimny should be included as well.

    ReplyDelete
  6. Sir Uly, could we also request for a chart comparing the base models this time (this may be more useful to more people since base models usually sell the most). Also could we include the Cost of Ownership comparison such as Fuel efficiency, cost of maintenance, etc. Please do STILL include the 2.2l base Everest. After all, we are living in a "3rd World" country and a "3rd World" vehicle may just be the appropriate vehicle given our road/weather conditions.

  7. Sex appeal lang ang kulang sa forester. Very much capable for a crossover.

    ReplyDelete
  8. The refinement of a Subaru is never comparable to a pick up based SUV's. It's like you're comparing a land cruiser to a rav 4.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Haha, ironic example, since the RAV4 is a crossover using a monocoque chassis and the Land Cruiser utilizes the traditional body-on-frame construction.

  9. To add, from actual driving experience, petrol true suv/crossovers awd are way lot more powerful in any climbing and passable terrain, than the most number of turbo you could cram on a diesel. Driving a diesel in rural terrain is plain too boring as it is completely no powaahhhh and it rattles a lot, not to include as if you are sitting on a thorned stone.

  10. have a 2010 fxt and am all for it but am wondering why the suzuki jimny wasnt thrown into the mix.
