Mazda Koeru Concept Previews All-New CX-9

Mazda showed off an all-new crossover concept car at the Frankfurt Motor Show. Called the Koeru, it’s a preview of the second-generation CX-9 which is expected to debut as a production model probably as early as the Tokyo Motor Show at the end of the year.

Meaning “Exceed” or “Go Beyond” in Japanese, the Koeru comes from Mazda’s aspiration to deliver value that goes beyond the existing category norms and standards. Targeted at customers with a cutting-edge mindset, the Koeru comes with Mazda’s complete suite of Skyactiv technology and of course, the latest interpretation of the KODO – Soul of Motion design language.

With the Koeru, Mazda designers attempt to capture the power and vitality of a wild animal and this is shown in the LED guiding rings, tight canopy, and a modulating body that suggest a sense of speed and volume. Highlights on the front and rear fenders extend towards the large wheels suggesting powerful legs that pound the earth.

Although currently a five-seater in its concept form, it’s expected to debut as a seven-seater crossover to replace Mazda’s aging CX-9. As a concept, the Koeru measures at 4,600 mm in length with an overall height of just 1,500 mm.
