Review: 2015 Isuzu mu-X LS-A 4x4

Photos by Ulysses Ang
The mid-sized SUV race is one of the most hotly contested ones right now and simply ignoring it means you can’t reach critical mass in terms of sales numbers. Of course, to gain a strong foothold, manufacturers have come up with their positioning be it through performance, smart technology, or comfort. That’s well and good if you’re a large carmaker with equally deep pockets. But what if you’re Isuzu—a name more synonymous with commercial vehicles than passenger cars? In the wake of newer and fresher choices, can the mu-X flourish, let alone survive?

A lot of criticism has been leveled against Isuzu for not trying hard enough with its recent crop of products. A lot of this stems from the brand’s overreliance on in-car entertainment functions rather than mechanical upgrades. And in the case of the Crosswind, this may be true. However, with the mu-X (or the D-Max even), this is the most they can realistically do. Mechanically, Isuzu’s mid-sized offering doesn’t push the mechanical envelope and playing Top Trumps with that’s written on the spec sheets won’t do it justice. Instead, you’ve got to give it a try, free from bias and all. And you know what, as long as you’ve got that kind of mindset, it gets the job done.

Built as a joint-venture with Chevrolet, the mu-X shares a lot in common with the Trailblazer in terms of sheet metal and it shows in cues like how the rear door meets with the D-pillar. Of course, that’s not to say that they’re carbon copies of each other. In fact, subjectively, the mu-X feels much more cohesively designed. The front clip, with its angular headlamps, chromed six-hole grille, and grayed out lower bumper gives it an aggressive and sporty appearance. The doors themselves, featuring a hard-creased character line, look much better than the slab-sided Chevy. The rear though is the mu-X’s biggest strength. It echoes the same angular treatment with just the right amount of chrome to keep it interesting.

Like the exterior, the mu-X’s interior is once again largely shared with its American relative. In fact, looking at them back-to-back reveals that, save for the overall color scheme and detail changes like the audio system and gauges, they’re practically the same—down to the trapezoidal-shaped center vents, dual glove box, center storage bin, and the large circular climate control system. It’s only when you go down to the details that you begin to appreciate the mu-X. First, despite being twins and all, the mu-X actually feels better made. This is perhaps all an illusion brought about by the all-black interior, but even if it is, it works. The plastics are of the hard variety for sure, but at least, there’s consistent graining and free from any rattling. Second, the gauges on the mu-X look and read great. Not only do they have LED backlight, but at night, a spotlight shines on them creating the illusion that the digits are carved in metal. And, all the controls light up at night with a serious shade of red.

The space and flexibility of the mu-X is better than most of the current crop of mid-sized SUV. In girth alone, it promotes good levels of shoulder and hip room for all rows. This is especially true for the second row where it can fit three adults comfortably. It doesn’t seem to slide fore and aft, but at least it tumbles upward offering easy ingress and egress into the third row. Here, the space isn’t as big, but it’s still good for two adults. You seat with your knees up back there and almost brushing the second row backrests, but at least they’ve got their own adjustable headrests. In terms of cargo flexibility, the mu-X offers close to a flat loading bay that spans from the back all the way to the second row.

In terms of toys, Isuzu has thankfully shown restraint with the mu-X offering just the right balance of needs and wants. In keeping with its tradition of providing a robust in-car entertainment system, it has an AVT touchscreen audio system with all the usual AM/FM, USB, and GPS functions. On top of that, it also has an overhead-mounted DVD system with a 10-inch monitor. For the designated driver, it comes with a powered seat and the segment’s first passive entry system with push button start/stop. Unfortunately, on this particular unit, the keyless entry already lost the receiver in the hatch thus displaying a ‘Check System’ and annoying loud beeps each time the driver’s door is opened.

Perhaps the biggest concern with the mu-X is its on-road performance. Considering it has some 2,025 kilograms to push, the 2.5-liter 4JK1-TC 4-cylinder CRDi looks taxed on paper alone. The mu-X produces just 67 HP/ton which pales in comparison to any of the competition: Chevrolet Trailblazer (96 HP/ton), Mitsubishi Montero Sport (92 HP/ton), Ford Everest (87 HP/ton), and Toyota Fortuner (84 HP/ton). Therefore, don’t expect it to be blistering quick; in fact, don’t expect it to be quick at all. While it will never smoke the drag strip, it does have a fat and usable torque curve. In fact, this is one of the mu-X’s saving graces. Because of this, locomotive progression is still achievable even when it’s fully loaded. A climb up Tagaytay with seven aboard proves effortless. Because of its smaller displacement, at least it’s quiet with the diesel clatter barely reaching the cabin. And surprisingly, despite the portly weight and weak engine, the mu-X produces shockingly good fuel economy figures: 9.25 km/L in the city and 15.62 km/L on the highway enough for a combined figure of 11.76 km/L.

For as long as you find yourself adjusting to the mu-X’s more relaxed and leisurely engine, the rest of the mechanical package impresses with its relative smoothness. Despite the large size, it’s easy enough to pilot through traffic. The steering is hefty and takes more turns than necessary, but still belittles its large size. However, because of the tall ride height, there are visibility issues with the dead-side and rear portion. Thankfully, rear parking sensors with a backing camera (no guidelines) comes standard. At high speeds, it’s still pretty secure and stable, but of course, you do feel it tip through tighter turns. Plus, despite being fitted with four-wheel disc brakes, it feels largely underbraked with a spongy pedal feel.

Going back to the question thrown in the beginning, does the Isuzu mu-X have what it takes to survive the mid-sized SUV wars? That truly depends on what you expect it to do. If you expect to top an aspect or two, you’ll be largely disappointed. Instead, what Isuzu has done here is to create an SUV that gets the job done, plain and simple. Yes, there are some frills built into the package, but since it tops out at below P 1.8-million, it doesn’t break the bank as well. The Isuzu mu-X is the silent performer of the mid-sized SUV; it’ll do what you ask it to, nothing more and nothing less.

  1. I hope that "tops at 1.5M" is the new price of the top of the line version

    1. Actually there was a typo. I was supposed to say it would be better if they priced it at P 1.5M, but changed the angle of the story to reflect a different sort of conclusion.

To remove any confusion, I changed and corrected the figures. Still, with the newer competitors going up in pricing, the mu-X presents itself as good value. Not great, but good.

      Delete
    2. So, do you think the value of the 4x4 Mu-X is just around 1.5M as opposed to the selling price 1.748M?

      Delete
  2. The last time I heard this was at 1.7 M? Is this another model? Or they just lowered the price?
Geez, such a big and heavy body. I really think this is seriously under power. For a manual 4x2, perhaps it can provide enough power. But A/T and heavier 4x4 iteration at that, I think speed will be seriously compromised. If the running joke about the Fortuner's brake is, brake today stop tomorrow. This one's gonna be, ride today reach tomorrow??
Any news of the 3L coming over? 4x2 perhaps?

    1. Based on the car prices at this site, I think the D-MAX is the one close to 1.5 at 1.487. Mu-X at 1.748.

  3. Ugly, underpowered and overpriced for what you are getting. Isuzu just crammed some "toys" inside and called it a day. No wonder it's the default choice of OFWs along with the outdated Crosswind. Folks, if you want a decent vehicle, get a crossover, not this piece of crud.

    1. You just called on the entire cheapo mid-sized SUV segment here, which is basically the MU-X, Fortuner, Montero, Trailblazer and Everest. All pick-up based. At least Isuzu was honest enough to acknowledge that these class of vehicles have naturally poor ride quality and handling, so they made the MU-X a fairly comfortable cruiser instead that offers a leisurely and relatively refined ride. It's the most refined of the third world mid-sized SUVs in terms of NHV and ride quality. It's soft and passenger-oriented.

Like you said, if you want good handling, performance and comfort, you'll need to buy a crossover. But 7 seater crossovers such as the Santa Fe and Explorer (yes, the Explorer is a crossover) are pricey, rightfully so because they're far more refined in all aspects. For most Filipinos though, price is simply paramount. I think the MU-X is a good buy considering it's relatively cheap across all its variants, has lots of toys, offers good fuel economy, and sits 7 in comfort. These things cannot be said for the likes of the Fortuner, Montero and co. which emphasize ruggedness through a harsh ride, poor NVH isolation, and an unrefined and rambunctious diesel engine to match their burly, large exteriors.

      Delete
    2. The refinement of the MU-X is just slightly better than those you mentioned. I still wouldn't pick any of these 3rd world SUVs as my primary vehicle. Maybe for business purposes, it's plausible. It's just sad to see many people being so enthusiastic about their 3rd world SUVs, their ignorance is pitiful to look at. It's like looking at someone praising their own worthless multi-cab.

    3. You find 1.748 Million cheap? underpowered and without cruise control? In trailblazer LTZ SE, 1.788 Million but with all convenience and with Cruise control? use your imagination

    4. Don't be such a douche.. di lahat ng OFW yan ang choice .. don't generalize.. by the way mas mapera kmi sa inyo.. sumasahod ka ba ng six digits per month.. i don't think so..

      Delete

      Delete
    6. Yes, I earn more than your paltry "6-digit" salary without leaving my family and country. Sure not all, but most OFWs would get the Crosswind or MU-X.

      Delete
    7. @ Anonymous

"Six digits" is nothing to be proud of. I'm in my mid 20s making over P150K/month after taxes and I'm doing it here in the Philippines. Start bragging if you make at least 7 digits a year without leaving your country and slaving over a company you don't own.

Face it. Most OFWs have poor taste in vehicles. It's either an Isuzu, a Fortuner, Montero or Innova. They usually buy the cheapest and least sophisticated family haulers. Hard to argue with their choices since it's their family here who will drive these cars when they're back abroad.

    8. But the misconception about diesels is that they are durable and easy to maintain. The truth is that most diesels have fussy maintenance and are prone to parts breaking down if not maintained properly, which is a common sight among those who have that typical ignorant pinoy mentality.

      Delete
    9. ^ Depends on the circumstances. There's a good reason why many Filipinos still buy older models like the Crosswind. It's because their engines and other mechanicals are not as complex as those in newer diesel models. Korean and European diesel engines are very sophisticated, which is exactly why they have tremendous performance vs Japanese counterparts with modest performance figures. The downside is that it requires a lot of engineering know-how to maintain and repair. Most mechanics in the province wouldn't know how to deal with such systems and it becomes a headache if you'll need to go to the city just to have the car maintained. This is why many buyers still prefer older diesels with simpler systems because they're easier to live with outside the city. Those who live in the city and can afford regular casa maintenance are better off with the fancier diesel cars. Well worth it in terms of refinement and performance. A current gen 2.0 diesel Sportage can wipe the floor against most naturally aspirated 2.0 to 3.0 cars in a rolling start drag race, even against light 2.0 cars like the 86/BRZ. Rolling start because diesels rev slowly from 0, but can accelerate like sports cars when at speed because of their very high torque figures and flat torque curves.

Last I checked walang ganyan mid variants ng MS/Fort. Educate yourselves please.

Anyway, this variant should cost no more than 1.5M.

Some of us bought Crosswind, then used for 3 years and sell it...in order to tell the truth and know the reality of Isuzu...buy an Isuzu and use it for 5 years and more and then observe it..by then you will realize that what i am telling you now is correct. Kaya if you make comment make sure you have an experience using this vehicle. Based on using SUVs i would rate from good to bad are Nissan, Mitsubishi, Ford, Chevrolet, Isuzu, Mazda...just a piece of advice.

  11. I understand the market of the diesel SUVs, and I get the rational why they buy it. Like it or not, some people buy cars out of need, not want, and we should be thankful that we can overthink car specs.

That being said, would I buy one? No.

  12. I'm pretty sure that people who buy Mu-Xs know that this is meant to haul their families, not to speed around. I havent heard of any Mu Xs that fly off flyovers, not unlike some people who think that just because their "SUV" has "SPORT" written on the badge, get illusions of grandeur that these "SUV"s are sportscars. Just saying.

  21. Both my parents are OFW, and yes, kailangan nilang magtrabaho abroad to earn a better profit since we don't own a company of our own(for now) not a shame of that because its true. We bought Mu X not because of unexpected pregnancy nor we dont want a faster car but because 'yun na pinaka affordable and cheapest sa suv segment with practical capability(LS model). With practical what I meant is kaya lumusong sa baha, maglagay ng madaming bagahe, with 7 -9 seating capacity( yung extra para sa lola ko at other relatives ), and diesel(yes we actually chose diesel since sakit sa ulo gas, hahaha) which "other" crossovers, apvs and mpvs fails to do so. Some of you may say bat di nalang kami ngsecondhand? First, trust issues lalo n pag di namin kakilala owner, second is most of secondhand cars ay sakit sa ulo. Kaya sa mga naka high end, or other luxury cars better than our car, wag niyo po kami ibash na mas madaming features oto niyo, we gave up on that part, since pareho lang naman power output(for mux), cash paid mula sipag at tyaga lang kaya naming ipagmalaki, di rin namin kailangan ipakita bank accounts namin, di na kami lalaban. We are just blessed to own a car alone na dati commute commute lang. Godbless and peace to all :)

    1. I'm not insulting anybody. It's just an amusing coincidence that most OFWs love Isuzu, granted there are a lot of better vehicles out there. I guess most of your kind prioritizes seating capacity and cargo space over the performance, comfort and safety of a crossover, eh?

      Delete
    2. Yes, I admit there are lot better car, the problem is we dont have enough budget for that.

The problem with crossover is di sya practical for us, san namin ilalagay mga bagahe tuwing umuuwi parents namin? Also, did you even test drive a mu x? Performance not that bad honestly, di naman kami bumili ng sasakyan para makipagracing, may stability control narin sya para s mga hard turns, and overtaking those trucks in the roads' actually easy. Comfort you say? Comfort for mu x is actually better than current suvs with the same segment. Di sya matagtag, fun to drive :) I've tried driving a crossover once, para lang akong nagdrive ng sedan na pinataas ng kunti.

    3. Anonymous September 8, 2015 at 1:22 PM,

You don't have to force everybody that your beloved CUVs are much better than PPVs. May kanya kanya naman tayo eh, for an OFW nga na laging wala, they'd rather have diesels which are less complicates and would need less maintenance.

  27. Stop hating just keep driving. Hehe pero really, stop comparing ladder frame SUVs like the Mu X to crossovers. They are two different bananas. Its a generally known fact that crossovers are designed for comfort (and paved roads) having a body built around a chassis frame, with a refined and quiet engine (usually gas, since diesels are inherently clattery). Ladder frame SUVs and their body on frame config are built for harsher driving conditions, since by design the ladder frame allows for a degree of twisting and bending. Perfect for hauling loads and going through the lubaks of our provincial roads. Ever heard of the news where a crossover's door suddenly went out of alignment after going through pot holes?

Well at the end of the day its all about needs. Don't bash other people's choices just because your main criteria in vehicle selection is purely comfort. Not saying that ladder frame SUVs like the mu x are uncomfortable by any means and that crossovers can't handle our crappy roads. Just my 2 cents

    1. The problem here is most of the buyers of these 3rd world SUVs live in urban areas. You'd have to wonder why in the hell are they buying those pieces of shit when 99% of the time they will never go through unpaved provincial roads.

    2. LOL, have you been living under the rock during the last years? Baha dito, daang daang potholes doon. Balik ko kaya sayo, I wonder why people buy raised sedans considering how terrrible Philippine road conditions are.

By the way, I find it funny whenever a driver is about to get out of vehicles such as this MU-X, Fortuner, Montero and other 3rd world SUVs. after parking, I always assume that they're fat, dark-skinned, wearing a cap, wearing an ugly sunglasses with orange tint, wears slippers, wears short sleeved collared shirt and cargo shorts, etc. (Basically, a tasteless DOM na biglang yaman). 95% of the time, my assumptions were correct.

  45. The Kramers are not baduy! Chesca is the bomb!

Moving to Isuzu, I can't imagine what's going on in the heads of the people who buy it. Isuzu does not introduce anything new. Model after model, its the same old thing. They'll just put on some fancy (but ricey) accessories and then slap it with a price increase. Look at what they did to the sportivo, put in some body kits, mags, baduy stereo system, leather seats (that do not suit the vehicle) and voila, a top of the line sportivo that costs almost the same as a montero.

This abomination of a vehicle is the same. Look at how bare they packaged the base model. They do that to further highlight that there top of the line have all the bells and whistles. If these additional features they charge a leg for is game changing, then good for them. However, that is not the case, the things they put in are child's play at best. Body kits sourced locally? A sound system that wouldn't even sound close to a 30k audiophile gear? Come on Isuzu buyers, stop buying these "gift wrapped" abominations.
