UPDATED: Chevrolet Enters Sub-Compact Crossover Battle with 2016 Trax (w/ Brochure)

UPDATE: Adding the official press release below as well as some event photos (10/20).

After a lengthy preview and striptease (since MIAS actually), Chevrolet is officially throwing their hat into the sub-compact crossover ring with the launch of the 2016 Trax. Designed top-down to take on the urban jungle, the Trax comes with the segment’s first turbocharged engine and is offered at an attractive price that starts below the one-million peso mark.

The 2016 Trax comes loaded with style and substance that starts with its taut and athletic exterior. Upfront, the signature dual-port grille takes center stage flanked by swept-back headlights with daytime running lights. Pronounced wheel flares and wrap-around tail lights add a dose of refinement while an integrated rear roof spoiler provides sleek style and aerodynamics to the rear-end. Automatic headlights, roof rails, and 18-inch alloy wheels further add to that sense of visual drama.

Inside, it has enough space to accommodate five adults comfortably while flexible seating configurations (8 in total) and 15 storage compartments allow the Trax to swallow almost anything you throw at it. Like the Sonic and Spark, it also features a motorcycle-inspired gauge cluster while a leather-trimming steering wheel adds a premium touch. A six-speaker system connected to Chevrolet’s MyLink system allows unparalleled connectivity options including Apple Siri eyes-free technology.

In order to gain an edge in the sub-compact crossover genre, the Trax comes equipped with the segment’s first turbocharged engine: a 1.4-liter ECOTEC 4-cylinder engine that produces 140 horsepower at 4,900 rpm and 200 Nm at 1,850 rpm; figures which are actually comparable to that of a 1.8- or 2.0-liter engine. The sole transmission is a 6-speed automatic.

For worry-free driving, the Trax comes loaded with a full array of safety features including dual SRS airbags, ABS, EBD, brake assist, StabiliTrak Traction Control (TCS), Hill Descent Control (HDC), and a rear parking camera.

The dynamic and athletic 2016 Chevrolet Trax is available in two versions: the P 998,888 LS and the P 1,218,888 LT variants. Both of these engines are differentiated by trim but are both front-wheel drive models powered by the same 1.4-liter turbocharged engine.

The 2016 Chevrolet Trax carries a 5-year, 100,000-kilometer warranty.

    1. yes especially for most dealers. For pms, ask your service adviser to remove the non essentials like rust proofing etc. and the price will be affordable

    4. Uhh not really. I have a cruze. PMS averages around 7-8k. Varies on replaced parts aswell. Plus I think If you do take good care of your car you won't need to repair/replace alot of stuff thus shell out less cash.

  2. Is the Trax the same size as the ASX?

  3. very similar to Mitsubishi ASX!

  4. Uly i need your advise, I'm torn between Ford Ecosport Titanium, Mitsubishi ASX GLS, Honda Jazz VX and Chevy Trax LS. Pretty much all in the same price range. I'm planning to give it to my brother as an early Christmas Gift. Hope that you can respond to my query. Thanks a lot

    1. your choices are mostly crossovers and then you throw in the jazz??? Ask your Mitsubishi agent about the ASX even they dont recommend it for some reason... baka maliit ang margin nila compared to other units but I never heard any agent of theirs praise or position the ASX.

I'm definitely not Ulysses, but consider your brothers needs. Is he more comfortable with a car or can and does he want to drive a taller vehicle? Is he married with kids or does he mostly travel alone? Does he pass through flooded areas frequently? What's his budget for car maintenance? Is he a car guy or couldnt really care less what he is driving?

    2. Thank you for your quick response :) now i have trim down my choices between Ecosport and ASX basically its all about fuel efficiency.

    3. If he's a student, get the Jazz. If he's a family man, get the ASX. Don't bother with the ecosport if it's the automatic transmission because it's a gas guzzler, the dual clutch transmission is jerky and has questionable reliability.

    4. I'd actually go with the Jazz for these reasons: easy service and parts (casa and non-casa; common enough for non-casa mechanics to know how to work with it) with reasonable cost, very good interior space, good on gas, and looks great.

Ecosport - Ford service cost is okay, but service is horrendous (EDSA and Alabang at least). Not sure what the parts market is for this car, but for my previous-gen Escape there's hardly any outside of casa, which is very, very expensive. I truly regret getting a Ford for these reasons. Never again. No matter how beautiful their current crop of vehicles are.

Trax - lots of stories about insanely expensive service.

ASX - I actually like Mitsubishi's and their parts and service market, but if it's not being pushed by salespeople, something must be up.

If you really need a tall car (i.e. your brother goes through floods or rough roads often), then I'd go for the ASX or the HRV.

  5. get the asx, it yield's better fuel economy than the ecosport despite the bigger engine

  6. I love to have a Trax. It's a cleanly designed car.

    1. i think philippine version Trax removed some integral parts that is available in usa version. one is the airbags. philippine version only has two, driver and front passenger which is typical in most cars sold in pinas. in usa, trax has six airbags that covers the entire interior of the car including the side and rear passengers.

    2. according to their ph website standard and six airbags on both variants.

    3. six airbags. almost the same with USA version.

  7. The main issue over the years is that Chevrolet's service sucks and the parts are expensive. Quite true actually. My cousin has a captiva and she said that she'd rather go to a 3rd party shop than go to the casa for repairs and maintenance. Chevrolet better get their act together.

  8. I've read that ASX has gps, does trax also have the gps navigation system?
