NAIAS 2016: Ford F-150 Raptor SuperCrew is Still Unmatched

You can now bring more friends on your off-road hijinks with the introduction of the F-150 Raptor SuperCrew. Still unmatched in terms of performance, the F-150 Raptor SuperCrew adds two full-sized rear doors and more rear passenger room. The wheelbase is stretched adding 12 inches (304 millimeters) to the already long 133-inch (3,378-millimeter) distance between the front and rear wheels.

Developed with the DNA of a Baja race truck, the F-150 Raptor features a purpose-built engine, chassis, and suspension enabling it to travel fast over challenging desert landscapes or crawl over rocky terrain. It uses advanced materials including high-strength steel and even military-grade aluminum alloy to help it save about 200 kilograms over the previous Raptor. Combined with the new EcoBoost engine, the Raptor power-to-weight ratio has been vastly improved.

The purpose-built fully boxed frame, the strongest in the F-150 line-up, hides a high-output version of the 3.5-liter V6 EcoBoost engine. It’s also paired to a 10-speed automatic transmission. It also has a new transfer case which manages power distribution between the front and rear wheels combining on-demand all-wheel drive with durable mechanical-locking four-wheel drive. The new Terrain Management System also features a unique Baja mode for high-speed desert running.

The F-150 Raptor also comes with FOX Racing Shox with custom internal bypass technology that dampens and stiffens the suspension over rough terrain helping the truck from bottoming out. Front and rear shock canisters have grown from 2.5 inches to 3 inches in diameter for improved performance. The suspension also features more travel than the outgoing model.

The F-150 Raptor SuperCrew is just a part of America’s best-selling vehicle for 34 straight years. It will be built at the Dearborn Truck Plant.
