The Big One: Mitsubishi Motors Philippines Launches All-New Montero Sport (w/ Brochure, Video)

The long wait is over as Mitsubishi Motors Philippines Corporation (MMPC) officially unveils the all-new Montero Sport for the Philippine market. After seven years, this best-selling mid-sized SUV finally gets a full redesign and now boasts of even better performance, comfort, and safety features.

As the fourth country to receive the all-new Montero Sport, it’s now available at all Mitsubishi dealerships in four variants: the GT 4WD (which we drove in Japan), GLS 4WD 6MT, GLS Premium A/T, and the GLS 2WD A/T.

The entire range is powered by the world’s first clean diesel engine equipped with MIVEC valve timing technology. Dubbed the 4N15, this 2.4-liter 4-cylinder is Euro 4 emissions compliant. Compared to other diesel engines, the Montero Sport’s powerplant features a lower compression ratio thereby reducing fuel consumption, smoke, and carbon dioxide emissions, while a Variable Geometry Turbo (VGT) system ensures a powerful drive. The 4N15 features 181 horsepower at 3,500 rpm and 430 Nm of torque from as low as 2,500 rpm. Mated to this engine is the segment’s first 8-speed automatic transmission with Sports mode. This ensures a sporty, pleasurable, and relaxed drive even at long distances. The single M/T variant features a 6-speed manual.

4WD models benefit from the sure-footedness of the Dakar-honed Super-Select II 4WD system which features a dial-type selector. This is complimented by the new Off-Road Mode (the first for a Mitsubishi model) which adds even more all-terrain performance and stability.

Outside, the Montero Sport wears the new Dynamic Shield front fascia giving it a bold and sophisticated look. All variants apart from the base GLS model come equipped with LED-type headlights with daytime running lights. Tube-type LED rear combination lamps give it an unmistakable presence at night. The GT variant is equipped with a power tilt and sliding sunroof as well. All variants are equipped with 18-inch rims with the GT variant benefiting from a two-tone finish.

Inside, luxurious black leather is standard for all but the GLS 2WD variant (where it gets black fabric seats). The front thrones feature multi-layer cushioning for improved comfort, especially on long distances while rounded shoulder supports add more upper body support.

The monotone dashboard is further complimented with silver accents and dark woodgrain paneling. The high console design adds sportiness while making sure that all the controls are laid out in an easy to understand manner. A new Multimedia Entertainment System adds a full array of entertainment options including a DVD and MP3 player, USB, Apple iPod, and even smart phone mirroring.

In terms of safety, the all-new Montero Sport is rated with a top-notch crash rating in both the Australasian New Car Assessment Program (ANCAP) and also the Latin NCAP. This is further enforced by the 7-airbag system on the GLS 4WD M/T and GT 4WD. The GT, GLS 4WD M/T, and GLS Premium variants all get Hill Start Assist while the GT 4WD also gets Forward Collision Mitigation, Blind Spot Warning, and Hill Descent Control.

As always, Mitsubishi is pegging the all-new Montero Sport to be unbeatable in terms of value and they come with the following prices:
  • GLS 2WD 8 A/T – P 1,500,000
  • GLS 2WD Premium 8 A/T – P 1,685,000
  • GLS 4WD 6 M/T – P 1,785,000
  • GT 4WD 8 A/T – P 1,998,000

    1. Yeah, the wood accent is a bit too overdone. But I like the layout, it looks better with the piano black accents.

    2. But not me, the wood accent is just right and it looks the best than that boring piano black accents.

  8. That wooden accent on the dash is so tacky and cheap looking, reminds me of the 1996 pajero, (that SUV was awesome though)
wooden accents are nice in the 90's, but now silver or aluminium trim is the thing now.

    3. ^I second that. This retarded weeaboo trash shouldn't be here. On a side note, the Montero is bigger, slightly more powerful and now has a fancy 8 speed automatic. Good of Mitsu to make big improvements. Toyota should be flogged for not making such advances with the Fortuner.

    4. Yup. Look at the guy's facebook. Clearly retarded. Why isn't he being controlled by his parents? Come on, stop treating this child like he's normal. They must still be in denial.

    5. There is a chance that the child is a drug addict.

  9. What's up with the exterior? May as well be a honda vehicle.

  10. I got my GT 1st week of January. All along I thought the features were similar to the previous post on this site and on the video posted on Youtube. I am referring to UMS or Ultrasonic misaccelaration Mitigation System and MAMS or Multi Around Monitoring System. If I've know that the Philippine version does not have these features, I'd most likely cancelled my reservations and bought a Ford Everest.

    1. In fairness to MMPC and myself, I did mention early on that the UMS won't be available for the Philippine market. That said, the around monitoring system is indeed a bummer. MMPC said it will be available with a parking camera--I assumed it was going to be the 360-degree camera. It's basically a standard backup camera.

    2. And you may keep your Everest that could catch fire! I will buy the Montero Sport GT!

  11. We'd tried last weekend test driving the new Montero sports and it's cool. I'd also heard that outlander will make a comeback soon. That will increase Mitsubishi's product line-up

  12. Toyota Fortuner 2016 best for me...
