Review: 2016 Suzuki Jimny JLX M/T

I strongly wanted to hate the Suzuki Jimny, I really do. The car itself dates back to 1998, making it legal to drink, smoke, and appear in porn videos. It drives like a two-ton truck, rides like a derailed freight train, and is less practical than any sports car (save for the generous ride height). Yet, each time I want to vent out my frustration at the Jimny’s very existence, it gives off this unmistakable charm that prevents me from administering lethal injection.

I’m not saying you should fall in line and buy yourself a Jimny; on the contrary, I’m telling you to avoid it completely. If you have any shred of decency, you should opt for something—anything else. It’s slow, unstable, and not particularly efficient. It makes walking feel more comfortable. Yet dammit, I loved every single minute chugging along in this old-school off-roader. This, I think, is the closest thing I’ll ever get to driving a Land Rover Defender and for what? Chump change.

When other car companies rushed to create ever softening soft-roaders, Suzuki has done the opposite and Frankensteined a small SUV that’s perfect both as a farmer’s tool and bouncy boulevard cruiser. The two main ingredients in this voodoo mix are the ladder frame chassis and dual ratio transfer case. And though I didn’t exactly go mud crawling in it, hardcore off-roaders swear by it. I mean, the spec sheet reads like a wet dream: ground clearance is 190 mm, approach angle is 34 degrees, breakover angle is 31 degrees, and departure angle is 46 degrees—and that’s good enough for me. Plus, I did drive it full speed over the truck lane on C5 and you know what? It happily handles this sort of terrain well. Sure, the front and rear solid axles jiggles the occupants like a mad fat-vibrating machine, but it rides here better than it does on smooth tarmac. That’s not to say it feels solid though. On the contrary, it feels like the cabin has the rigidity of Jell-O bolted onto a stiff Arnold Schwarzenegger-like chassis.

While I loved terminating potholes, the recirculating ball steering system does take some getting used to. I find it handles like a larger car; like a pickup truck from a bygone area (it actually brakes like one too). Massive amounts of turns are needed to negotiate a simple U-Turn. Thankfully, the diminutive body makes it slot into spaces which would otherwise panic the hell out of larger cars. The midget dimensions also help with the sideway swinging tailgate which when fully opened takes about the same amount of space as a typical compact crossover. Climbing aboard requires a good step up and once aboard, the seats are, I find, mounted high. It’s so high that I could see the entire length of the hood, so positioning it with millimeter precision proves easy. In fact, visibility is a strong point of the Jimny though the thick B-pillar does mean a terrible blind spot around to the side (good luck having to negotiate with bicycles and motorcycles).

With a 1.3-liter engine with 81 horses and 110 Nm of torque, it sounds crazy to attempt a long distance drive in this car, but that’s exactly what I did. The result, therefore, isn’t surprising. If you’re into sort of that thing, the Jimny gives a good arm workout. It requires constant correction and can be tiring to drive on the relative smooth pavement of SLEX. Plus, once the speedometer needle goes past 80 km/h, the front tires start to lose what remains of its limited feedback. Playing Grand Turismo using a steering wheel has more feedback. Drivetrain refinement is also pretty much how you’d expect an 18-year old car to feel like: noisy, wheezy, and underpowered.

But instead of hating it, I love wringing it. The engine isn’t particularly rev happy and is pretty asthmatic, but the short gearing does contribute a lot to its fun character. I thank the easy-to-modulate clutch and decent gearbox (long throws though) for this. You’ll actually need to constantly shift gears just to maintain a good pace. Take note though that 100 km/h arrives at a high 3,600 rpm and this heavily penalizes the fuel economy: 14.52 km/L on the highway. It’s also not much better in traffic: 7.01 km/L in heavy (average speed 11 km/h) and 9.05 km/L in light traffic (average speed 18 km/h).

The biggest draw for me is the Jimny’s cutesy exterior. Like a typical Asian, it’s managing to look younger than its age. There has been some work done on its nose, but it’s actually withstanding the ravages of time quite well. That being said, I’m no fan of the faux hood scoop—it’s just out of character on this no-frills micro SUV.

Sadly, the fountain of youth formula only seems to work outside. Inside, it belongs in the same era as the Backstreet Boys. Plain and hard plastics, dated ergonomics, lack of even the most basic safety equipment, no multimedia inputs (even a token aux-in jack)—they are all part of the cabin experience. Again, Suzuki has worked to modernize some touch points (the gauges for one), but overall it’s 18 years old and it shows.

In terms of space, the front passengers won’t feel shortchanged thanks to the large, upright greenhouse and surprisingly supportive seats. However, those in the back would probably feel better if they had no legs, first. Decent rear legroom is only achieved when the front passengers agree to compromise. Otherwise, it’s best reserved for knick-knacks such as handbags. And speaking about luggage space, with the rear seats up, there’s not much to go by: 113 liters. It does grow to 324 liters with the rear seats, but that’s still not a lot. Some flexibility is offered by the 50/50 split-folding seats.

The Suzuki Jimny isn’t for everyone. It isn’t for those who drive on flat pavement all the time. It’s not for those who value practicality. It’s not for those who want the latest and most technologically advanced thing out there. It’s for a super select group of people who’re looking for something with a bit of character. I really cannot see the practicality of owning one as a daily driver, but I understand the appeal of the Jimny. Dare I say it, it’ll likely appeal to the same bunch of people who swear by Land Rover Defenders. And that’s saying a lot.

  1. Wondering why Suzuki for a long time didn't ugrade its low power gas engine.
Sir Uly is right the exterior design is excellent. If Suzuki could mount a turbo diesel on this cute but aggressive offroader, i would certainly prefer it over the gas guzzling FJ Cruiser and Offroad sissy's CX5, Forester, CRV and RAV4!

81 horsepower only? That's for sissies! Real men need power and torque, and that's what the DURAMAX ENGINE in the TRAILBLAZER and COLORADO! 200hp 500nm san ka pa

The same with the VM Motori Duramax Engine.

Apparently, you're one of those old dudes that resists change in technology and cling to their old ways(which includes those who buys the Advie, Crosswind, Jimny)

  5. The author is right about the truck lanes on C5. You can actually "off-road" there and it can really damage the suspension of [modern] cars if the driver is not aware of the broken pavement.

    1. You have a point but the weight of a Honda City with 118hp is around 1.2 tons, while an Everest may have 197hp but weights around 2.5 tons. See the difference, more power is not always better. You get better fuel consumption as well with a small compact engine. Also, I bought a compact car because I mainly drive it in the city, and sometimes the occasional out of town trips in which I was very satisfied with its 2.0L 155hp engine. Fuel economy is even better than the big diesel SUVs.

    4. Anon@10:35 Gas engine can never be more economical than Diesel Suv. I own a Diesel Midsize suv and a gasoline compact car, mas madalas pa dumalaw sa gas station un maliit kesa sa malaking suv at mas mahal ang presyo gasolina. Besides diesel fuel have 30% more energy stored than gasoline.

Tapos sa expressway at provincial roads, kulelat nman lagi cla...
Asan ngayon power to weight ratio sinasabI mo...?

LOL.

      Delete
    6. Maybe your gasoline compact car is an old model. My 2015 Mazda 3 can easily reach 10km/l in the city. But Gasoline is really a bit more expensive than diesel. Besides sedans are not made for hauling people and cargo, they are made for comfort city driving. And SUV's have bigger fuel tanks. Girly crossovers? I don't think so, many people don't like the idea of driving a huge brick in the city, you'll see the difference of using an SUV and a compact car as a daily driven car. Also, compact sedans are faster than your huge brick. Haven't you noticed, there aren't any sports cars that run on diesel? Try to race a 2016 Honda Civic RS and your Everest, you'll see.

      Delete
    7. Volkswagen came out with a diesel Golf GTI called the GTD. Top of mind, that's the only sporty road car that runs on diesel that I know. That said, a lot of race cars run on diesel now.

You are comparing here apples to oranges.

      Delete
    9. kaya mahal ang diesel vehicles kasi compression type sya. kelangan robust yun engine block kaya mabigat pati. yung hi pressure injectors at pumps nya mahal din gawin kaya mahal ang diesel vehicles. yun sinasabi mo na ang diesel habang umiinit ay lalo lumalakas at bumibilis, 1960's pa na pananaw yan. hindi na yan applicable ngayon sa tindi ng technology ng mga makina ngayon. yung montero, everest, fort at tblazer mo, nag ta top out lang yan up to 180kph. even a mirage 1.2 kayang mag 170kph. most 2liter cars kaya mag 200kph hindi lang binibilisan kaya akala mo walang laban. in reality, cars are still faster and more stable than PPVs na sinasabi mo. mis informed ka lang.

    10. Thanks Uly for the knowledge. Why would you ask that stupid question whether I know things about cars or even drive one? You're the first one to compare a compact car and an SUV, not me. There's nothing bad with typing or even speaking in English, I find it more professional and I like to read English rather than Tagalog(I'm not saying Tagalog is bad). You say performance doesn't matter while blabbering how slow compact cars are. Those compact sedans and crossovers might not be pushing it when you saw then in the expressway. Diesel has a lot of torque initially but I hate the sound of a diesel engine and gas engines will be the faster if you will really push it. Diesels are also known as pollutants(Unless you have the European/American/Japanese diesel spec'd cars which passed strict emissions testings). I'll not stoop down your level of insulting. Also, compact sedans are more comfy than your PPV.

And how on earth possible na mas mabilis yan mga compacts kontra sa midsize diesel suv's? Have you driven in SCTEX TPLEX? On the highways? Naging maton ba yan mirage? O nagbubulag bulagan lamang?

      Delete
    14. How on earth is it possible? Subukan mo makipag karera sa seryosong compact sedan nga. Dami mong satsat.

The sad thing about 3rd world SUVs is that they're slow, cumbersome and unrefined. According to autoactiv, the colorado/trailblazer are the fastest 3rd world pickup/SUV here and those pieces of crap achieve 0-100 in 9 seconds. FYI, even measly 1.5L subcompacts can easily do those 0-100km/h in 9 seconds too. Pathetic.

    15. I have never lost on a race with a compact car. Maybe if a drove a previous generation fort, montero or everest. Suvs now may be low on hp but have up to 500nm in torque. I handily beat older forts in my compact car

      Delete
    16. The colorado and trailblazer have 500nm of torque yet they're still slower than most compacts and are equal to most subcompacts when it comes to acceleration.

    17. I have a Santa Fe and you can barely hear engine noise at 150kmh as if its barely awake. With my Civic you can hear a lot of racket everywhere at that speed

    18. Lol...you say 70hp x 100Nm of the Mirage vs 200hp x 480Nm of the Everest and you're sayin the everest lost the race??? Who will believe u?

      Delete
    19. The Santa Fe has better NVH due to it being a more expensive car in a higher class than a compact car. Try a midsize executive sedan vs a compact crossover. And the mirage weights less than a ton. And by compact car I don't mean A segment or B segment cars, I'm talking about the C segment cars. Btw, I'm not the previous anonymous'

      Delete
    20. Its not just the nvh you can see from the tach that the civic is getting stressed at more than 100kmh while the sta fe is barely past 2k rpm at 150kmh

      Delete
    21. You are right. For Sedans, Compacts and Crossovers that can reach the speed of 180kph the RPM gauge has already encroached the red line which limits the allowed revolution per minute of the engine crankshaft. Flooring the gas pedal will not yield any increase in speed because the power and torque curve has already reached their limit and remains flat. One can only hear the sound of the engine roaring strangely and if the rpm continue longer to stay on the redline at any moment engine damage will occur. This true for cars with outputs of about 160Hp and 250Nm engine outputs.

For Diesel Suv's with above 180Hp and 450Nm engine outputs, 180kph to 200kph is achieved with lower rpm of about 2500 which is way below the 3600-4500 red line zone. Pressing the accelarator to increase the rpm above 2500 will proportionally increase the speed above 180kph without causing further internal stresses to the engine parts. The power and torque curve of the engine will peak at an incredible 180Hp and 450Nm intersection. At this point, the engine propels the vehicle with a tremendous speed with these Suv's reaching their maximum velocity above 200kph !

Another point is that at above 180kph, Suv's NVH levels is very low, its like you're travelling only at 120kph. Whereas for sedans, compacts and crossovers at 180kph, mararamdaman "nanginginig at magalaw na" meaning occupants safety is already in peril due to instability.

For small cars designed for racing or performance in a controlled environment like inside the racing circuit, that's a different story!

      Delete
    22. I don't think a brick like an SUV or a pickup will achieve 200km/h. They have poor aerodynamics and the diesel engine will also be strained if pushed like a gasoline engine. Not all compact sedans or crossovers are unstable at high speeds, due to their handling and aerodynamics as compare to a brick SUV or pickup that pushes itself against the air at high speeds. You forgot one thing, aerodynamics.

      Delete
    23. The effect of Drag to a car running at 100kph is that 8 to 10hp is needed or lost to overcome air resistance. This applies to boxy vehicles with Drag coefficient of 0.40 like suv's and pickups. With a 200HP engine you still got say 180 net horse power running with air resistance eliminated. Besides a net 450Nm Torque turning the wheels. Therefore, compared to smaller cars with 120-160hp outputs the effect of aerodynamics have no significance even assuming these cars have zero drag. Practically, There is no way small engine cars beat cars with bigger engine displacements.

Logically or interrelated to the saying "There is no replacement for displacement".

      Delete
    24. One more thing, yon sinasabing 'power to weight ratio' wala rin sagsay yan unless you're inside the racing arena. Kung nasubukan nyo, sa highway man o provincial roads kahit kotse o suv ang dala mo hindi mo aabutan ang mga walang kargang 10 to 16 wheeler trucks.
You need more power and press hard your accelerator para ma-overtake mo sila...These are everyday normal driving happenings and experiences.

      Delete
    25. You have a point but I still beg to disagree in some other matters. See how the new Civic's 1.5L turbocharged engines outputs around 170hp and 220nm of torque? Thats comparable to a 2.5 naturally aspirated, but personally, I would still chose the naturally aspirated for long term use. About power to weight ratio, have you driven a fully loaded car or even an suv with max passengers and cargo? You will really feel the added weight when driving as compared to a car with just you or 1 passenger in it.

      Delete
    26. It's true the weight could be felt. But the loaded Suv can still overpower and overtake the compacts or crossovers.

      Delete

      Delete
    28. ^I'm talking about the importance of weight reduction in cars. A compact car with 2.0L engine at just 1.2tons and a SUV with a more powerful engine at more than 2 tons. ,My point is that power to weight ratio matters.

      Delete

    5. The guy defending the Jimny is like my dad, they're both old fashioned and believes in outdated technology. They have a point though that things designed and built in the past lasts longer, but we need to modernize and look forward to the future. Modern cars are improved versions of past cars. From the design, power, fuel efficiency, safety, etc.

      Delete
    6. It depends on the need. If the other guy needed it for offroad and farm road use, the Jimny is unbeatable for its price. If you had him drive a soft roader, it wouldn't last a year in that environment.

  20. The Jimny was designed for off-road use and some trips on road. If you spent 90% of your time on the road you will be disappointed. Maybe this review should be done like that. Its like if you took the Civic or the 3 was done off-road it would have been a disaster for both cars.

    1. That's exactly what I said in the review.

But for 90 percent of us who don't exactly off-road and treat the Jimny as a cutesy car, then it shows its failings.

Again, to each his own. There's no denying the abilities of the Jimny as a 4x4.

  22. ive been driving a borrowed conservatively lifted jimny for a month now. everything you said is true! its hard to drive around the city, it has seriously bad turning radius, for such a small car, it's hard to maneuver in tight spaces, it's bouncy and the seats are bad. but you're right, it has character and that's enough to win me over. the jimny is like the sir for off roading. it's one of those cars that you'd hate for a daily but is nice own and to be used occassionally. it looks like a toy coz honestly, it is. as you've pointed out, it probably is the short geared tranny that makes it nimble.

its amusing that a lot of commenters still bash this and bash people who appreciate the jimny.

oh and for all those people who would call me stupid for buying an old car and who does not know the new cars, i own an sir and a land cruiser so dont lecture me about new cars=better old car=bad.

a real car enthusiat cares about the car and its personality, not its age.

  23. I enjoyed reading this article, Mr. Ang. You can be quite the bitch! You should be like this more often. As for the Jimny, my take is why buy a such a tiny thing when it could probably be easier to park a Fortuner?

    2. Atsaka ung jimny hindi po pang racing. Atska anung masama sa old car. 2016 old car. New kaya un. Hahahaha. Mahilig lang talaga sila sa classic. Kc puro nag eevolve na ngaun. Masarap mag balik tanaw. Kaso ung tao hindi matibay kaya sila duguan. Pero ung jimny gas gas lang. Hahahaha joke. Kc masyado kau mainit sa jimny ah. Ngaun nga ang daming may jimny ngaun eh. Left and right sa kalsada front an back may jimny.

  29. Car nerds.

The 4th generation Jimny is about to be released within 2 years!

Ang Jimny naman, despite its 'outdated-ness,' is a highly respected 4x4 worldwide especially in Japan, Europe, & Australia! Even Jeep, Land Cruiser, & Land Rover folks respect this little trucklet. Sayang walang Jimny sa US as Suzuki Auto stopped operations few years ago.

I simply adore the Jimny simply because of its size for NCR driving, even if its a clumsy machine to operate.

In most cases, being old school is a good thing! Kasi medyo na-spoil na tayo sa mga need-less tech of current cars of today. Hence reducing our drivers involvement on certain vehicles, and sometimes vehicles like the Jimny is a breath of fresh air!

  32. For me jimny is for people who lives in places where asphalt is absent. Its a great deal, one classic pocket off roader.

    1. So far, it looks very promising. Sayang Suzuki kept the Jimny Kei (660cc version) in Japan.

But I have a saying that: "Never buy a 1st or 2nd year model vehicles." I rather wait for Suzuki to sort out potential gremlins when it does come.

I will own a 2018 Jimny model soon, I know...laitin niyo ako for buying a vehicle from the stone-age. Pero this 3rd-generation model has proven itself on the Global scale, hence it's a very reliable and robust rig! Plus most newer vehicles these days lacks personality, I do also own a 2015 Forester XT sa US. I love cars that rewards you and returns the favor.
