Tough Has a New Attitude: Isuzu Philippines Launches 2017 D-Max (w/ Complete Specs)

Isuzu Philippines Corporation (IPC) is steadily gaining ground in the hotly contested pickup truck segment with the launch of the new 2017 D-Max. Currently the country’s most fuel-efficient vehicle, based on the Department of Energy Fuel Economy Run, the 2017 D-Max packs a series of upgrades that make it more athletic while building on Isuzu’s core values of reliability, durability, dependability, and value for money.

“For many of our customers around the world, the Isuzu D-Max has become their trustworthy companion for both family and business use.  After all, the D-Max is stylish, and yet it is also very tough. But look again, because ‘Tough’ just got a new look and a new attitude. Yes, it is tough, but it doesn’t lose its chill,” said Mr. Hajime Koso, President of Isuzu Philippines Corporation.

The 2017 D-Max features a stronger, more emotional design with a tweaked front-end made bolder by the re-designed hood and six-hole radiator grille. Further emphasizing the more powerful presence is the new projector-type headlights with LED daytime running lights and front fog lamps. Matching the strong fascia, the D-Max’s rear has also been refreshed with a re-sculpted tailgate that now incorporates a spoiler shape design that improves the aerodynamics and styling. LED tail lamps also offer heightened visibility at night. Beefing up the D-Max’s stance are newly-designed 18-inch alloy wheels fitted with 255/60R18 tires at each corner. Suited for both street and light off-road use, this upgraded wheel-and tire-package not only improves the looks, but also gives better traction and driving dynamics.

The 2017 D-Max interior likewise receives a slew of updates. First up, the electroluminescent instrument cluster has been re-designed with clearer and sportier graphics. All models receive a colored multi-function display sandwiched by the tachometer and speedometer. But for models equipped with a manual transmission, a built-in gear indicator with shift light display provides timely information on when to shift up or down to maximize fuel economy. Next, the premium character has been heighted by new luxury features such as the power-adjustable driver’s seat, leather seating, automatic climate control, and a passive entry system with a push-button engine start/stop. Finally, the 7-inch touchscreen infotainment system has been updated with built-in navigation and can even be equipped with a Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS).

The 2017 D-Max gets the tried-and-tested Isuzu 4JJ1-TC (HI) diesel engine. Equipped with a Variable Geometry System (VGS) turbocharger and intercooler, this 4-cylinder engine generates 163 horsepower at 3,200 rpm and 380 Nm of torque at 1,800-2,200 rpm from its 3.0-liter displacement. This engine can be mated to either a 5-speed automatic with sequential shift or a 5-speed manual transmission.

On models equipped with 4WD, the D-Max has the Terrain Command Select Dial that allows drivers to shift from two- to four-wheel drive with a simple twist of a knob at speeds up to 100 km/h. But whether in 4x4 or 4x2 guise, the 2017 D-Max comes with a new driver-assist package as standard. This package includes Electronic Stability Control (ESC), Traction Control System (TCS), and Hill Start Assist (HSA). Other standard safety features include dual SRS airbags, anti-lock brakes with EBD and brake assist, and rear parking sensors with camera.

Coinciding with the launch of the new D-Max, IPC has also announced a new campaign dubbed, “Tough Enough for Anything”. Along with the new campaign, IPC has chosen a new brand ambassador that embodies the athletic, family-oriented, and handsome qualities of Isuzu’s venerable pickup: the accomplished sportsman, actor, model, and host Derek Ramsay.

“Like the 2017 Isuzu D-MAX, Mr. Derek Ramsay is tough, and appears capable of handling anything that life may throw at him. We at Isuzu Philippines Corporation are extremely proud to have him as part of our family,” said Mr. Koso. “An accomplished Frisbee player who competes internationally, as well as a soccer enthusiast, Mr. Ramsay also has a tender soul as evidenced by his closeness to his family, and by his involvement in various civic and charitable activities.”

The 2017 Isuzu D-MAX 3.0L LS is available in Venetian Red, Cosmic Black, Titanium Silver, Splash White, and new Obsidian Gray paint colors. It comes with a 3-year/100,000-kilometer warranty (whichever comes first). Prices are pegged at P1,520,000 for the D-MAX 3.0L LS 4x4 A/T; P1,450,000 for the D-MAX 3.0L LS 4x4 M/T; P1,210,000 for the D-MAX 3.0L LS 4x2 A/T; and P1,140,000 for the D-MAX 3.0L LS 4x2 M/T.

    1. Yup. Euro 2 confirmed by Isuzu Philippines.

    2. I thought euro 2 engines are prohibited already? How come this is still offered?

      Delete
    3. Because there's a gradual phase out process approved by the Philippine government for companies that assemble non-compliant (i.e. below Euro-4) vehicles. If memory serves right, IPC has until 2018 to phase out non-Euro-4 vehicle in their line-up.

    4. So another update of the D-Max is coming.

Why couldn't they just make it Euro-4 now? So to people who wants to buy a D-Max now, there will be another update soon.

This is quite a long time why dont the new DENR & DOH secretaries look into this? Be it brand-new or surplus, Isuzu and Mitsu engines are major sources of pollutants in the metro!

    6. Ulysses Ang, I am sure new launches in 2016 onwards must be EURO 4 complaint & IPC Philippines acknowledges this regulation before and are now violating it.

"In 2010 the government mandated that all new passenger and light-duty motor vehicles to be introduced in the market should comply with Euro 4 emission limits, subject to Euro 4 fuel availability, beginning January 1, 2016."

"Vice President of Isuzu Philippines Corp. (IPC) Joseph Bautista earlier disclosed that Philippine automotive companies are ready to comply with the January 2016 Euro 4 emission standards for brand-new vehicles and 2018 for the old vehicles."

The main reason IPC launches MU-X & D-Max with 3.0 4JJ1-TC (HI) EURO 2 engine in October 2015 to avoid the 2016 deadline compulsory to launch of EURO 4 complaint engine from January 1, 2016

    7. I guess not a good choice for now.....its almost 2017 now, meaning those who will own this euro 2 engine has only more than a year to use legally on the road, after that time i dont know what will happen. i would think many many times before buying this truck now :(

    1. The strada says hi.

      Delete
    2. That's subjective. The new Strada's look can't decide whether it's going to look like a Car or not.
The new Ford Ranger looks like a Warthhog with HUGE Black nose. Plus, it's Lemon Show Pony that only looks good on paper. Reliability WAY DOWN low.

      Delete
    3. But I'll still pick Nissan or Toyota pickup compared above stated.

  3. The only more reliable option I have owned aside from an Isuzu is a Toyota.

  6. Considering our gov't regulators' mental capacity is questionable we might wake up one day hearing they would ban euro 2 and older engines. So, put that in mind before buying cars with still euro 2 engines.

  7. Not so interesting.

Many are waiting for the coming of "Isda", the baby pickup conceived from Isuzu-Mazda bigamous love affair. Can it go head to head againts the Wildtrak?

    2. The Ranger best dual-cab diesel pickup you can buy that Ford sells all over the world. Too bad Ford service sucks.

    3. Ford produces better cars but bad service reputation really makes buyer look away. Just like Hyundai.

  8. Nice exterior and interior. However durablity of the car in question and the bad servicings that i've received was indeed memorable. Maybe terms and conditions must be read before purchasing this "affordable" ,Fuel efficient and travel more miles truck? Can we really believe what was advertised and written? Erm....

  10. Pick-up crazy Thailand has this as its best selling model in the category narrowly edging the Hilux. Too bad no blue power, but the 3L 4JJ is bulletproof. There's also the welcome addition of ESC, Traction Control, HSA, Brake Assist. Only other pick-up that has the added kit in the segment is the Ranger.

    1. I've seen 3.0L 4JJ1's run up to 400,000+ km with nothing else done but an oil change every six months. Isuzu 4JJ1's are really reliable.

  11. On the safety kit, referring to the 4x2 segment btw.

  12. No 1.9 liter engine? The new one on thailand? This truck spells yuck!!!

  13. Then next year, they'll update it again. Really, it's getting updated almost yearly. First, they "upgraded" the old 3.0 to the 2.5 VGS. Then, they "upgraded" to 3.0 w/ VGT. Now this. WTF

    ReplyDelete

    1. Yeah. WTF. What kind of upgrade is Euro 2?
Next yr the Euro 4? Then the 1.9L? That should give them the excuse to raise prices.

  14. Mazda and Izusu pickup trucks are dying.
Cosmetics wont help its old and aging engine...its 163Hp x 380Nm weak output rightly earns the title "Slowest Pickup in the Philippines". While the second and third slowest's Betty-50 & Estrada only attracts the girlish mainly because of their feminine designs!

PS. I'm sure "Mr 'gonna' will again reply with the words "Crap and Retarded". But he cannot even put up a good argument on why he choose his beloved Kia Celerio.

Have a nice day to all!

    1. I'm not one to respond to trolls but the slowest is the Hilux 2.8L according to real world testing by caradvice Australia. The D-Max with its meager 380Nm matches the Colorado with 500Nm. Paper specs aren't everything.

"Indeed, we did our own performance testing (without a load on board), and found the Ford was easily the fastest from 0-100km/h, with an 11.1-second sprint. Next was the Navara (11.3sec), D-Max and Colorado (11.8sec), Amarok (12.2sec), Triton and BT-50 (12.4sec) and the slowest – by some measure – was the HiLux (13.5sec)."

    2. Specs are not published for nothing.
Remember what happened to Volkswagen cheating their fuel mileage? And now Mitsubishi? Both of them were fined and loss millions of dollars as penalty for providing false data to the buying public.

Before a vehicle model goes for production and out to the dealerships,
it undergoes numerous test....like No Load Run, Full Load Run, 72 hours continues engine run, more than a year testing on different terrains and climate...they gather and collect the results and publish the data...like power, torque, max speed, fuel consumption etc. Then they publish to the public in the specs. Remember cheating the specs is a case of "Swindling or Estafa". In conclusion, the vehicle Specifications speaks for itself!

  15. Was really wowwed when i saw the new D-max 2017 here in Philippines till i saw the antenna. Always been and always will be an Isuzu D-max fan but its so stupid that they sell the New 2017 D-max without the Shark Fin Antenna, 6 speed auto and not the DDI Blue power engine. hayyyyz, might as well wait again.

    1. Hi.

With regards to the phase out, that's what the guys at Isuzu told me. I'm sure there's a loophole that enabled them to sell the 2016 D-Max with a Euro 2 engine.

      Delete
  19. Loophole or not, the market has spoken and truck buyers have been going for the Hilux and Ranger in droves, leaving the D-Max in the dust. That so-called "reliability" card Isuzu diehards insist on passing around doesn't work anymore. The public is already aware that Isuzu's engines are dated and now we know it's still arrogant enough to dump its junk in the Philippine market. Perhaps it's time for Isuzu to stick to commercial vehicles, since it's obvious that the public can no longer be fooled.

  20. This vehicle, having just 2 airbags would miserably fail the NCAP crash test.

  21. Almost everybody are complaining about this smoke-belcher truck, bakit may portable emmission tester ba kayo? Are you really digging about itd emmission figures? I dont think being SO VERY CONCERNED about the environment is the main reason why you hate the truck's engine but other engine versioj foreign countries have. Do you really care? Bakit hindi na lang ninyo sabihin 'gusto namin ng Blue Power 1.9' ng nasa Thailand. Tama na yan, there a lots of jeepneys out there na sobra ang usok. What you people need is to do carpool. You cars a waste of space in streets of Manila....

May time table po ba kung kelan pwede mag expire ang mga newly purchased euro 2 engine? Baka hindi na kami makapasa sa emission test pag nag renew na kami ng euro 2 engine vehicle. Any inputs mga sir?
