Mazda Philippines Enhances Mazda2 Sedan and Hatchback (w/ 11 Photos, Specs)

Mazda Philippines just updated the diminutive Mazda2 subcompact hatchback/sedan boosting not only its driving dynamics, but its safety and aesthetics as well.

Coming in strong as Car of the Year in both its home country of Japan (2014-2015) and the Philippines (2015), the 2017 Mazda2 continues to cement itself as the most driver-centric subcompact choice by gaining G-Vectoring Control in all but the base S variant.

The pioneering technology under the Skyactiv-Vehicle Dynamics umbrella, G-Vectoring Control is the first system in the world that uses the engine to enhance the chassis behavior. Using the steering input, G-Vectoring Control varies engine torque to optimize the vertical load on each wheel.

Apart from G-Vectoring Control, the new Mazda2 also gains some new exterior and interior enhancements. All models receive a chrome fog light bezel with models V+ and up receiving LED fog lights. The side mirror is also new with a horizontally-arranged LED signal indicator. It’s the R model that gets even more changes with new headlights (LED instead of HID) and alloy wheels (two-tone gunmetal-and-silver instead of high-gloss black and silver).

Inside, the refreshed models benefit from a new three-spoke steering wheel plucked straight from the Mazda3, seat fabrics, and dash inserts. Again, it’s the R model that benefits the most from this refresh getting dark chocolate brown inserts on the dashboard and knee bolsters as well as leather/suede combination material for the seats. Meanwhile, enhancing the 2017 Mazda2’s safety is the Active Driving Display (heads-up display) and 6 airbags (front driver and passenger, side-impact, and curtain) for the R model.

A surprising bit is that all these enhancements don’t come at any extra cost with the Mazda2 managing to keep its pricing the same as before. The 2017 Mazda2 IPM (as Mazda calls this enhanced model) is available in the following variants and prices:  S 4-door M/T (P 748,000); V+ 5-door A/T (P 865,000); V+ 4-door A/T (P 895,000); and R 4-door A/T (P 975,000). The new Premium Series will arrive by August.

  1. Dang I just got mine half a year ago. If only I knew of these updates that has no added cost when I was still buying.

  2. I dropped by the zoom fest and experienced sitting and inspecting the quality of all the Mazda models there. To share my experience with the new Mazda 2, when I first sat in it, it feels like a luxury car already minus the thickness of the steering wheel and leather inserts of the luxury brands. Nothing in the class even comes close in terms of providing you with a feeling of luxury and the best part is the drive. I even don't know why the hell people buying a subcompact will choose another vehicle aside from the Mazda 2, maybe the lack of knowledge perhaps? The suede and leather seats are awesome to the look and touch. You really feel that the materials are high quality, coupled with the interior layout. And before any troll there tells me about Mazda's low resale value, tightness and lack of parts, Mazda's resale value is steadily improving due to the gradual awareness of buyers since the 1st skyactiv models were launched. While Mazda parts are still slightly expensive and not as available as Toyotas, it's not an issue because how often does a vehicle change parts? And Mazda's target market are not the same with Toyota's. The tightness is a drawback but it is a compromise which is acceptable if you look at the positive side, the driving experience, the exterior design, the interior layout and quality.

    1. I forgot to mention the Yojin 3 free PMS wherein in some dealers, there is a loyalty program that will extend the 3 years free PMS to 5 years.

    2. Space is paramount today unless you don't take in any passengers. We never ride my barkada's 2 because everybody complains of the backseat space

    3. Is the MT still being offered? Hope they keep on doing so. Wait for me MT!

I'm really liking it and want it for my next car, but I guess for the rest of us what we need (i.e. space for the wife and kids, and yayas and grandparents) counts more than what we want - I think that's the reason why many stick to run-of-the-mill offerings of other brands.

I'm working on mine though, by repeatedly saying to my wife that I want a Mazda every time we see one on the road. Hopefully in a few years time she'll have no objection.

    4. With the number of passengers you have to accomodate get an suv or van. Kids yayas grannies in the backseat is not a good recipe

  3. Now tell me why if this is not the best subcompact in the Philippines right now.

  4. Way overpriced and overrated at 900k-1M. The similarly priced Fiesta with its Ecoboost is clearly the better buy. It can easily zoom past 150kph. The zoom of this Mazda is just pathetic.

    1. Overrated? You haven't even drove one. Experience it and you'll change your stance. The Fiesta is a good car, but it cannot offer what the Mazda 2 offers regarding to the overall experience. Btw, the Mazda 2 can easily zoom past 150km/h.

    2. Mazda will get there but it will take forever. The engine is buzzes like hell in the high speed making it tiring to drive on the highway. Pedals and steering vibrates at high speed too. It can get past 100 but it isn't comfortable to drive. Strictly a city car

    3. I have driven a Mazda 3 2017 2.0 on the highway and yes it is noisy but that adds to the fun. But the seating position and the seats themselves are very comfortable, I never felt tired in that 3 hour drive. What mazda did you drive? The pedal is organ type which lessens fatigue on the driver and it has cruise control well at least for the Mazda 3 2017. Everything felt solid, so don't troll here because nobody will believe your trolling. The engine likes to rev and that adds to the sporty driving experience. The Mazda 2 1.5 engine is very peppy and engaging btw.

    4. Akala ko Mazda 2 ang article bakit Mazda 3 2.0 na? Its like comparing a Brio and a Civic.

    6. LOL! The Ford Fiesta Ecoboost will decimate its competition, Mazda fanboys think they stand a chance. The only problem is the DCT tranny is prone to breakdown (TCM problems).

      Looks - Mazda 2
      Overall Practicality - Honday City
      Speed - Ford Fiesta Ecoboost

    7. Gusto mo mabilis try accent hb crdi. Lakas ng hataw mt pa naman. Sobrang tipid pa

    8. I think the early dct problems have been resolved by software updates much like last year's Fortuner had problems with the transmission. I happened to drive a fiesta and its transmission was very good

    9. Revision to your categorization:
      Looks - Mazda 2
Fun of Driving - Mazda 2
      Space - Honday City
      Speed - Ford Fiesta Ecoboost

Mazda 2 owner here. Mabilis talaga ang Fiesta, walang sinabi yung M2 ko. hehehe

Pero yung complian sa tunog ng engine ng M2, that was the fun part, kaya sya tinawag na zoom zoom.

    10. Since mas gusto ko ang driving experience over speed, if it were me I'm getting the Mazda 2. Kung speed ang gusto ng iba, I recommend the fiesta, no doubt about that.

      Delete
    11. Ok sana kung ang zoom zoom me ibubuga naman sa speed e wala naman. You have to trash it real hard to get decent acceleration. Where's the fun in driving when you are staring at the smoke of a 6 wheeler truck or bus?

      Delete
    12. Hi Sir. You might be confusing speed and driving experience. Hindi po sila pareho. Speed is speed, driving experience is the combination of handling, nimbleness, agility, comfort, speed (sports mode), even the sound of normally aspirated engines that produce, and many many more that you find in the M2. Speed is not the equivalent of fun in driving.

On the other note, the M2 does not lack in speed, switch it to Sport Mode and there you go. I have no problem overtaking trucks and buses on the high and twisting roads of Nueva Viscaya (look up for the pictures of that road).

    13. I don't know where they got the idea that Mazda vehicles are slow. They are not the fastest in the segment, but they aren't the slowest either. The turbo charged cars in the segment are the fastest but they don't offer the driving experience of a Mazda. You'll only understand what I'm saying if you ever drove one. Not everything is all about speed. The 0-100 of every Mazda vehicle are nkt the fastest but they are among the fastest in fact.

    14. Please do not call the Mazda2 an M2. Its just wrong

    15. are we seriously talking about speed on a econo cars? lmao

Justifiable din ang price point @ 748k

    3. hi uly
I spoke with one of the sales rep in one of the malls near our place about the 2, he informed me that there is a base unit m/t hatchback with the mzd connect. Is this true? I've checked the website and no such thing is coming up on the specs sheet. Maybe the sales rep is trying to pull a fast one on me thinking that I'm not familiar with their products. thanks

      Delete
    4. There is a base MT, yes. But no, it doesn't have the MZD Connect. It has a simpler audio system.

  7. Just got my V+ 3 mos ago. lol :D
Good thing is that there isn't much aesthetic changes.
Can live without the G-Vectoring feature.

  8. the best just got better.. Mazda 2 owner here.. people who are complaining about speed just search OVT ph and see what it does to the mazda 2. =)

    ReplyDelete
  9. Mazda 2 is a good car but not as sporty as they claim. You have to thrash the engine hard at high rpm past 100kph which will shorten engine life. Stuff like OVT may give engines a boost sacrificing fuel economy and durability. Its also noisy and strained past 100kph which is not that fast to ask for in a car with sporty pretensions.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Thrashing it is the best part. The designed it to be trashed but it can keep up to 100km/h @ 2krpm. It's a subcompact, what would you expect, but yes NVH is a weak point in Mazda vehicles. But if you compare it to the competition, it is among the sportiest.

      Delete
    2. Hindi naman ganyan kabilis ang 100 para strained yung engine. It looks sporty but doesn't hold a candle to the true sporty beasts like the fiesta and crdi accent. Its sporty like a vios

      Delete
    3. ^Says the guy who doesn't even own any of the above cars. Have you ever driven a Mazda 2 at 100km/h? The fiesta is one of the sportiest in the segment but Ford reliability sucks, while the Accent is quick and fuel efficient, it is devoid of equipment for the price and has an unreliable chassis as well.

      Delete
    4. How do you think I know the 2 is noisy past 100? Ka level lang sila ng Vios at 2 but it looks ricey though. Accent is much cheaper by more than 100_200k. It's like an ek civic you can customize. Ford reliability is actually higher than mazda per jd powers global ratings

      Delete
    5. Through reading? I've driven and ridden both the Vios and the Mazda 2 and I would pick the Mazda 2 anytime. The vios is roomier at the back though, and yes the white Mazda 2 with red bodykits look a bit ricey but it looks good. The accent's diesel engine is a gem but everything else is mediocre. You would spend time and money to get up to the Mazda 2 or the City's level of equipment and not everything can be bought aftermarket. In real life, there are countless stories of Ford horror stories and even Americans prefer Toyotas over Ford. Though I like Ford's offerings, I wouldn't buy one due to their reputation of being unreliable.
