All-New 2018 Honda Accord is More Dynamic, Sporty (w/ 13 Photos, Specs)

UPDATE: Included are key specifications for the North American market (7/15).

Honda shows off a dynamic new direction for their best-selling executive sedan. With the US market introduction of the all-new, 10th generation Accord, Honda is going for a more stylish, sporty, and premium sedan powered by all-new engines and packed with a host of new technology features.

Riding on a new platform, the all-new 2018 Accord features a wheelbase stretched by 55 millimeters and a width that adds 10 millimeters overall. Yet, thanks to optimized packaging (including reduced overhangs), it’s actually shorter by 10 millimeters and lower by 15 millimeters. Interior space, especially at the back is larger with 50 millimeters more legroom for the rear passengers.

Like the Civic, the all-new Accord gains fastback styling with a sweeping greenhouse positioned farther back. From the front, the upright fascia adds boldness while the signature solid wing grille emphasizes the width. Full LED headlights and fog lights sandwich this grille while a chiseled hood with a raised center adds sportiness. At the back, the Accord has an upswept trunk, LED light-pipe taillights, and integrated dual exhaust ports. Interestingly, the Accord also uses German manufacturing techniques, using a laser brazing process that joins the arching roof line and body side panels. This creates a clean appearance with no garnish over the rain channels.

Inside, Honda’s aim to make the Accord more premium than ever before is achieved by the use of soft-touch materials that improve not just the visual, but the tactile feel of the vehicle. The seats offer optimized padding with variable firmness to improve comfort and lateral support. Heated and cooled functions are available for the first time as is a 12-way power adjustment for the driver.

The Accord also debuts a new HMI (Human Machine Interface) that includes a 7-inch TFT driver’s meter and 8-inch Display Audio touchscreen interface with physical knobs. It also comes with both Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. On higher trim models, a heads-up display is also available.

The biggest news with the 2018 Accord is the removal of the V6 engine option. For 2018, Honda’s executive sedan is solely available with a new line of 4-cylinder engines.

The first is a 1.5-liter direct-injected turbocharged 4-cylinder engine that replaces the current 2.4-liter 4-cylinder. Shared with the Civic RS and CR-V, it produces a healthy 192 horsepower at 5,500 rpm and 260 Nm of torque from 1,500 to 5,000 rpm. This engine is mated to a CVT transmission or a 6-speed manual for the base variant.

Moving up, the V6 is replaced by a 2.0-liter direct-injected turbocharged 4-cylinder engine. Related to the Civic Type R’s mill, it’s been tuned to produce 252 horsepower at 6,500 rpm and 370 Nm of torque from 1,500 to 4,000 rpm. For this application, Honda is introducing its lightweight 10-speed automatic transmission.

For the North American market, the Accord is also available in a hybrid flavor. The gasoline component uses a 2.0-liter Atkinson cycle 4-cylinder together with a compact lithium-ion battery pack.

Together with this new lineup of engines, the Accord uses 29 percent ultra-high-strength steel—the most in any mass-produced Honda vehicle. This brings up the torsional rigidity by 32 percent and bending rigidity by 24 percent while reducing the weight by up to 80 kilograms. It also lowers the center of gravity by 10 millimeters and improves the front-back weight distribution to 60/40.

The lighter body is also mated to a lighter chassis that uses new aluminum control arms mounted to an aluminum front subframe. The rear multi-link suspension has also been redesigned to make it more compact while fluid-filled bushings further improve ride comfort and bump absorption. Also available for the first time is an Adaptive Damper System that provides an even more pliant ride thanks to shock absorbers that adjusts the damping force every 1/500 of a second.

All Accords will come with a Two-Mode Driving with Normal and Sport settings. The system engages with multiple chassis and drivetrain components, including the new dual-pinion variable-ratio electric power steering (EPS), automatic transmission, drive-by-wire throttle, adaptive dampers and Active Sound Control system.

Along with the first application of structural adhesives, cabin quietness is further enhanced by a comprehensive sound-insulating package that includes full underbody covers, which also aid aerodynamics, front and rear fender and engine compartment insulators, alloy wheels with proprietary resonator technology, sound-absorbing carpet, acoustic laminated windshield glass, and a new three-microphone Active Noise Control system.

  2. Still can't defeat the Mazda 6 in terms of providing a luxurious experience and interior design. The exterior looks good but quite overstyled unlike the elegant and sexy Mazda 6. The touchscreen unit on the Accord also looks cheap compared to the 6. Lastly, the Mazda 6 2.2 diesel is more fuel efficient and offers a lot more useful torque.

    1. Mazda 6 has same interior space as the civic and istop makes it unreliable

    2. Accord > Mazda6 or simply put, Honda > Mazda.

    3. The istop doesn't make it unreliable, the battery lasts 18-24 months and you can substitute the local Amaron that costs 4800 and yes it has been tried and proven with no problems for over a year now. If you don't like istop, you can set the aircon at 18 degrees and it automatically disables. Recent Honda exterior and interior designs are ugly af and overpriced as well, so how do you justify Honda>Mazda? The driving experience, tech, features, looks, quality of the Mazda 6 or any Mazda trumps over the Accord or any Honda. That said, the only advantage that Honda generally has is more interior space.

    5. Tsismis lang Yan amaron pwede maski sa product list Nila hindi sila gumagawa ng deep cycle battery para SA istop. Nakalimutan nga palagi ng ksramihang car buyers mag off SA electronic parking brake SA sobrang limit ano pa kaya SA istop. Kung malimutan mo off it will drain your battery quickly

    6. You mean recycle one design across the board like mazda? No wonder the 6 doesn't sell as they look the same as their cheapest car

      Delete
    7. I don't see any problem with the electronic parking brake, just don't forget to switch it on when parking.

It's a wonder how people bash Mazda's similar grill yet after 2 years, Honda is following suit with their solid wing face design. The new city, mobilio, brv, civic, accord and crv have the same faces now. Their front face now also looks the same.

    8. I may have to agree this time, Mazda 6 2.2 diesel > Accord. The Accord's exterior design doesn't cut it. Although in due fairness, it's really spacious inside as compared to Mazda 6.

Mazda 6 diesel is the better buy this time hands down. Free 3 year maintenance plus you get away with the problematic i-stop for the diesel variants. The only downside is, it has the tightest interior space in its class (it's tolerable though) and you have to be careful not to hit your head in the roofliner upon ingress and egress.

    9. If you're going to buy a Mazda 6, better to save the cash and buy the Civic Turbo which has the same if not better interior space and way faster too. The backseat is disappointing for a midsize car and the ride is firm for an executive car.

      Delete
    10. ^ yeah buy the Civic turbo because its faster (sarcastic). Dude, seriously, wala na bang ibang masasabi ang honda kundi space and speed? pati sa executive sedan segment ipagpipilitan mo yang speed ng civic? Lowly box-minded honda fanboys. makatahol lang, tsk.

    11. ^This is an article about a Honda, hence, anybody can say anything about a Honda. The suggestion of the guy above you actually makes sense, the Mazda 6 is the tightest in its class and your head gets to hit the roofliner upon ingress and egress most often than not. We're not even talking about the lack of luxury features in the Mazda 6 as compared to the TOTL Camry and quite a bit on the Accord.

Your Mazda has flaws and negative points too, fanboys.

    12. That's why the Mazda 6 doesn't sell well. It's priced as an executive sedan but has less space than some compact cars

      Delete
    13. That space and Mazda6's subpar reliability. If you read JD Powers' extensive vehicle reliability study, Sonata and Camry are rated 5 stars, Accord 4 stars while the Mazda6 just scores 3 stars

      Delete
    14. By lack of luxury features, you mean the sunshade? Lol. The camry and accord's interior quality is at par with Mazda but the design is far better. How tall are you btw? I'm 5 foot 9 and I did'nt hit my head even once in the 3 or 6, and evem in the two, though they're tighter than the competition.

I haven't hear of a Mazda 6 breaking down except when the owner fails to maintain the battery. The Sonata? Lol. I'll take even the boring Camry over that.

      Delete
    15. LMAO. Do you know all the Mazda6 owners all over the world? JD Powers is a global market information powerhouse that has access to all kinds of data that you can only dream of and not what you read in your pathetic fanboy forums. Too bad the Sonata and Camry is now the gold standard in quality for midsize cars now. Try searching for 2017 Mid-Size Sedans comparison tests and you will see that the 6 comes in a poor third out of six cars. Just as anemic as its quality.

    16. Mazda Fanboy, here are those features im talking about that can be found in the TOTL Camry that's absent in the Mazda 6:

      1. Powered rear windshield sunshade
      2. Manually operated rear passenger sunshade
      3. Powered rear passenger seats (reclinable)
      4. Rear center control (for audio, aircon, sunshade and reclinable rear seats)

Of course i don't expect you to know that, you're just a typical Mazda fanboy.

    17. I heard towing companies make a killing in Mazda due to istop problems especially those who don't use the recommended deep cycle batteries. Me nabasa Siguro sa forums o narinig SA chismis na pwede amaron

    18. I'll take the Camry over the Mazda 6 too, anytime of the day. But I prefer the 6 over accord. Its not true it lacks the luxury of the accord, its at par. Plus, its an unconventional mid-sized sedan, all mazdas are in their own segment. This may be overused but true, mazdas are fun to drive.

    19. I can't fault you if you'll choose the Mazda 6 (2.2 diesel variant) over the current Honda Accord and the upcoming model. It's same sentiment that i have. If ever i'll decide on replacing my aging midsize sedan with a brand new midsize sedan, i'll choose between the upcoming Camry or Mazda 6 diesel.

Honda has been sleeping on the job as the Camry continue to lord it over in terms of features and sales even if it looks dull exterior wise as compared to the Accord.

  3. ^the rear is a merc rip off... up front they have to do away with that chrome bar behind the logo... the looks just doesnt cut it...

  4. RIP accord we own a 2004 and a 2010 model. But this 2018 is like cancer now.. ugh

  5. Midsize sedan market is dead in the ph totally replaced by suv

  6. The Dashboard is identical and same to the 2017 Kia Optima and most of the BMW Cars.

    1. japanese really lost the mojo for design, they just copy and modify designs from competitors. no japanese company has made any break through in the 21st century. sony has been fading fast. for toyota, honda only quality is making them afloat, but if they continue to breed bad designs they will fade quickly too. competitors like hyundai wants to take advantage of this weakness but they arent there yet, so theres still time for japanese to make good adjustments if they can figure it out. they better infuse new thinking not rely on those old traditional japanese strained brains.

  7. Actually when you look at Hyundai Korea. They have plenty of arsenal to compete for the mid size sedan. I dont know why but what happened to hyundai Azera in Philippines? The Azera 2018 model would easily destroy accord and camry 2018 when it comes to design.

    1. Too expensive for ph market. Midsize sedan market is dead here as most prefer suvs due to bad roads and flash floods. Azera is really fast though my ranger couldn't catch up on the highway.

    2. Yeah, these days, most executives prefer buying PPVs and another compact car (for coding).

  8. Brace yourselves, poor people and hateful comments are coming.

  9. What happened to the design? I think Honda has overdone it quite a bit. My choice of replacement for my aging midsize sedan has become harder now with that kind of exterior design.

But in due fairness to Honda, interior looks good and very spacious. I expect the fuel efficiency to improve with the smaller engine plus turbo set up.

  10. That MT though..

  11. Too complex design, even Toyota's design are now better. Honda should learn from Mazda or the German marque's simple yet elegant designs.
