Hyundai Builds Their First Hot Hatch: Meet the i30 N (w/ Specs, 11 Photos)

UPDATE: Key specifications are now included (7/16).

Inspired by Hyundai Motorsport’s experience in the World Rally Championship (WRC), Hyundai Motor shows off the i30 N hot hatch—the brand’s first high-performance car under the N lineup. Built atop the standard i30, it’s been tweaked and massaged from the ground up to deliver maximum driving fun in both everyday situations as well as on the track.

As its name suggests, it was born at Hyundai’s R&D center in Namyang, Korea and honed at the Nürburgring. And with a logo reminiscent of a chicane, the i30 N is Hyundai’s answer to an emerging customer preference towards technology-driven performance.

Under the hood, the i30 N packs a 2.0-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder engine with 275 horsepower and 353 Nm of torque. Guaranteeing a more emotional sound track, the i30 N features a variable exhaust valve system while an over boost function can raise torque by 8 percent (acceleration improves by 6 to 7 percent). Power is routed through the front wheels courtesy of a 6-speed manual transmission with a rev matching function.

Tuned at the Nürburgring Nordschleife, the i30 N features enhanced cornering response and stability thanks to a rack-mounted motor-driven power steering system, lowered ride height, and grippy 18- or 19-inch high-performance tires. The chassis’ rigidity has been boosted, particularly at the back, with a thicker sway bar. It also has an Electronic Controlled Suspension (ECS) that allows the driver to adjust the dampers from something comfort-oriented to something more track-focused.

Surprisingly, Hyundai has exercised restraint with the i30 N’s looks. It’s more mature and sophisticated despite the unique front and rear bumpers and new spoiler. Overall, it’s definitely more Golf GTI or 208 GTi than Civic Type R or WRX. The same level of restraint is showed inside where the i30 N’s driver-centric cabin is simple and straightforward. A new instrument cluster shows key performance parameters as does the 8-inch floating infotainment screen.

Guaranteeing attainable performance, the i30 N comes with a slew of customizable driving systems that change the character of the car outright. This includes not just the engine, rev matching, and dampers, but even the Electronic Stability Control (ESC) and Electronic Limited Slip Differential. The i30 N even comes with a Launch Control system.

The i30 N has undergone 10,000 kilometers of development work on the Nürburgring Nordschleife including participating twice at the ADAC 24-hour Nürburgring Challenge. Currently, the i30 N is slated for sale only in European markets with deliveries to start by the end of 2017. Though that severely limits the chance of seeing the i30 N being sold in the Philippines, the i30’s platform twin, the next-generation Veloster, is rumored to be getting the N treatment as well. And since the Veloster is sold as part of Hyundai Philippines’ lineup that could potentially make it here soon.
