The Aston Martin Valkyrie is Simple, Mad Genius

Aston Martin is revealing more details about the Valkyrie including the latest evolution to its styling and the first glimpse of its cockpit. The most hardcore hyper car ever, Aston Martin and partner Red Bull Advanced Technologies have been working extensively to bring what’s essentially a Formula One car for the road.

The latest photos show off subtle revisions compared to when it was first shown in 2016. The changes were made in the pursuit of aerodynamic efficiency and downforce.

One of the biggest changes is found at the front where the openings in the body surface between the cockpit and front wheel arches led to significant gains in front downforce. In addition, Aston Martin stripped things to the bare essentials, celebrating the engineering rather than concealing it behind cladding. This is found in the headlights, which are attached to an exposed anodized aluminum frame as well as a chemical etched aluminum ‘wings’ badge nicknamed ‘lace wing’ that’s 30 percent thinner than a human hair. Further detail innovation can be found at the rear of the car, with the world’s smallest third brake lamp that runs down spine of the Valkyrie’s airbox and rear bodywork.

Interestingly, the Valkyrie will not have traditional side or rear-view mirrors. Instead, it’ll have two discreetly mounted rear facing cameras in each of the flanks. In turn, they feed the two displays which are positioned at the base of each A-pillar to mimic the view provided by conventional door mirrors.

With Aston Martin reckoning that the styling is around 95 percent completed, the British supercar maker has finally shown what’s inside the teardrop-shaped cockpit. The ultra-minimalist interior features seats which are mounted directly to the tub with its occupants adopting a reclined ‘feet up’ position similar to today’s Formula One and Le Mans Prototype race cars. Safety is provided by standard four-point harnesses with six-point ones as an option. All of the switchgear is then located on the steering wheel with all of the car’s instrumentation shown on a single OLED display screen. The steering wheel itself is detachable aiding ingress/egress as well as serving as a theft deterrent device.

The Aston Martin Valkyrie will be powered by a 1,130-horsepower 6.5-liter Cosworth V12 engine with a planned release date sometime in 2018.
