Mazda Gives Sneak Peek of 2018 Mazda3

With an exhibit centered around “Celebrate Driving”, Mazda is showcasing two new concepts at the 2017 Tokyo Motor Show. One concept heralds the company’s next-generation products while the other embodies the design direction of the company.

The first is a compact hatchback that’s believed to be the all-new Mazda3. Considered as a production concept, the compact hatchback adopts Mazda’s Skyactiv-Vehicle Architecture. Likely an improvement over the current Skyactiv-Body, Skyactiv-Vehicle architecture applies “human-centered design philosophy for optimal functionality.” Additionally, it’s powered by the new Skyactiv-X engine, the world’s first commercial gasoline engine to use compression ignition. And as always, Mazda promises dynamic performance that’s been dramatically refined and “condensed to create Mazda’s ideal compact hatchback.”

Meanwhile, the design vision model defines the next-generation of Mazda design. Believed to be an updated version of the RX-Vision Concept which wowed Tokyo Motor Show goers in 2015, Mazda says it’s a “more profound expression of KODO.” From the single teaser sketch shown, this new concept features flying buttresses ala MX-5 RF and four doors.

Aside from these two concept cars, Mazda will also be showcasing the three-row CX-8 crossover as well as a new version of the MX-5 roadster that features the RF’s auburn Nappa leather upholstery and a new dark cherry red canvas roof.

  1. Looks good! The tail lights has a resemblance of those in the CX5.

    1. Yeah it might look good but it's not something we haven't seen. Mazda needs to step up its design. Nakakasuka na.

    2. We shall see. But from the looks of it, it looks like a minor redesign similar to the CX5. And it still looks cramped.

    3. Mazda models have a similar front grille, because it's their corporate identity? Something that makes people recognize that it's a Mazda. Other manufacturers are also on the same path, Audi, BMW, Honda, etc.

Btw @Anonymous @7:40 AM, how's your Honda Civic RS Turbo?

    4. ^ i've already made my reservation and im in line to get mine by December. I have the option to move to my original plan (early next year) if the Excise Tax law implementation won't push through on January 1, 2018.

    5. I drove and sat on the backseat of my friend's Civic RS turbo and I found it quicker once the turbo spooled up and the cabin is more spacious, the dash is somewhat futuristic but I don't know why it failed to capture my heart. The mazda 3 did, despite my brain's urging to go for the Civic. 10 months and counting, still as satisfied and happy as if it's the 1st day. Just sharing.

    6. I haven't tried being a passenger yet but when i test droved it, it's quite fast. I actually think that i'll be needing a brake upgrade most especially if i decide to have my ECU tuned.

I can't blame you for that, we have individual preferences. The Mazda 3 is drop dead gorgeous after all, you won't get tired looking at it. We live with the pros and cons of our decisions.

    7. Mazda looks good but its design is ubiquitous as f***. Boring na. Paulit ulit na lang. Corporate face nga but I've experienced a scenario where non car enthusiasts can't differentiate models because they look extremely similar, it was a mazda 2 and 3 sedan. I myself know the difference between them but I have a hard time telling them apart too when looked at a distance.

  3. This new generation would look and perform better than even premium German brands at a non premium price. However, while the interior design would most probably be at par or even surpass those German brands, I cannot deny the thickness and solidity of the materials used on those premium German brands.

    1. This^. I had the option to buy the 2016 Mazda 2 or the Jetta (1.6 Diesel, MT), at the same price of 850K. I opted the Mazda 2 since natakot ako sa maintenance ng Jetta. I have no regrets sa Mazda 2 pero nanghihinayang parin ako sa Jetta, kitang maganda ang mga materials. Not to mention it's a segment higher than the Mazda 2.

    3. It's a driver's car. Most suitable for those driving alone or w/ a special someone, using the backseat for the occasional passengers.

  4. This would probably be in our market by 2019. And excise tax would have applied as well
