You Need Wholesome Thoughts When Using Nissan's New Technology (w/ Video)

Nissan just unveiled a way to help you control your car based on inputs from the driver’s brain. Dubbed Brain-to-Vehicle or B2V technology, it promises to speed up reaction times for the driver and will lead to cars becoming more enjoyable to drive.

Nissan will demonstrate capabilities of this technology at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) 2018 trade show in Las Vegas. B2V is the latest development in Nissan Intelligent Mobility, the company’s vision for transforming how cars are driven, powered and integrated into society.

“When most people think about autonomous driving, they have a very impersonal vision of the future, where humans relinquish control to the machines. Yet B2V technology does the opposite, by using signals from their own brain to make the drive even more exciting and enjoyable,” said Nissan Executive Vice President Daniele Schillaci. “Through Nissan Intelligent Mobility, we are moving people to a better world by delivering more autonomy, more electrification and more connectivity.”

Nissan’s B2V technology is the world’s first system of its kind. The driver wears a device that measures brain wave activity, which is then analyzed by autonomous systems. By anticipating intended movement, the systems can take actions – such as turning the steering wheel or slowing the car – 0.2 to 0.5 seconds faster than the driver, while remaining largely imperceptible.

Although B2V is currently limited to supplementing driver input through prediction (interpreting brain signals trying to initiate movement such as turning of the wheel or pushing on the accelerator) and detection (evaluating discomfort), it could one day change the way people interact with cars and the road network as a whole.
Just make sure to have “wholesome” thoughts when using this technology through. If not, your companions may wonder why you always end up “unintended” at Air Force One when all you wanted was to go to the “nearest 7-Eleven.”
