Porsche is Ready to Restore the Last of the Air-cooled 911s

Your eyes aren’t deceiving you: Porsche just unveiled a unique one-of-one 2018 993-era 911. A restoration project known only as “Project Gold,” it brings a 1998 Porsche 911 Turbo back to life 20 years later.

Upgraded to Turbo S specification, it means it gets a period-correct twin-turbo 3.6-liter air-cooled flat-6 engine making 450 horsepower. Mated to a 6-speed manual, all that power is transferred to the ground via an all-wheel drive system.

What’s even more interesting is that Project Gold got its entire engine and drivetrain sourced from Porsche Classic—no doubt a signal to 993 Porsche owners that the last of the air-cooled 911s has already achieved “classic” status within the German carmaker and that the factory is ready and willing to restore these modern collectibles.

Aside from the mechanicals, the Project Gold 911 gets a unique Golden Yellow Metallic color—the same one found in the 2018 911 Turbo S Exclusive Series. Inside, the Project Gold gets the same loving treatment as the Turbo S Exclusive Series in that the leather seats feature yellow leather beneath the perforations to create yellow racing stripes. The dashboard also has carbon fiber trim and a Porsche Classic stereo head unit with GPS navigation.

All of this love and care in Project Gold 911 means it gets a badge proclaiming its one-of-one nature and a chassis number that comes immediately after the last 993 built in 1998.

Having said that, the Project Gold 911 isn’t street legal, at least in places with stringent emissions standards (we’re pretty sure that doesn’t include the Philippines). Project Gold will undergo the hammer at RM Sotheby’s 70th Anniversary Porsche auction on October 27 for a good cause. All proceeds will go to the Ferry Porsche Foundation which focuses on education, social issues, and youth development.
