The Isuzu Concept X Duo Can Eat Tough Terrains for Breakfast

Australia is wild about pick-up trucks. Some race them on the track, while some, well, they go to something more extreme. Meet the Isuzu Concept X—a pair of one-of vehicles based off the D-Max pick-up and its SUV sibling, the mu-X.

Designed around its tires—massive 38-inch (38x15.5R20) Toyo Open Country mud terrain tires, the D-Max and mu-X have been extensively reworked to fit them in. The tires are fitted to Method MR610 Con6 20x12 wheels connected to a custom chassis that give it a 7-inch lift over the standard models. The D-Max also swaps its rear leaf spring suspension for a coil spring one also found in the mu-X.

The result? 370 millimeters of ground clearance and impressive off-road credentials: 49.7-degree approach and 38.5-degree departure (37.3 for the mu-X) angles.

Surprisingly, the brainchild of the Concept X, Australian-based Team D-MAX (known for making the Isuzu pick-up do precision driving tricks) has decided to keep the engine bone stock. It remains powered by the 3.0-liter 4JJ1 engine mated to a 6-speed automatic. Stopping power though has been upgraded with custom TBS Racing 6-piston front and 4-piston rear disc brakes.

Given that the Concept X has an overall height and width extending past 2 meters, there’s almost no chance of seeing these go into production. However, Team D-MAX says there are some easy bolt-on parts out in the market that can create the same effect as the Concept X duo.
