The Mitsubishi Engelberg Tourer Impress With Its Tech, Not Its Looks (w/ 9 Photos)

This is the Engelberg Tourer, Mitsubishi’s next-generation crossover which, quite frankly, has styling only its own mother could love. It’s named after the famous ski resort in central Switzerland but sadly, none of the typical Swiss design sensibilities made it to this three-row crossover.

Upfront, there’s the usual Mitsubishi Dynamic Shield front-end which has now been “enhanced for a more active type of lifestyle.” As such, it’s got skid plates, and even LED fog lamps located in front of the auto open/close roof box. Inside, it’s got three-row seating and an interior that puts quality, comfort, and functionality as priorities.

While the Engelberg Tourer doesn’t impressive with its looks, there’s no complaining with what’s underneath: it’s a Twin Motor 4WD Plug-In Hybrid Electric Vehicle. It’s a full-time four-wheel drive with high output, high-efficiency motors driving the front and rear wheels. It’s even got an Active Yaw Control (AYC) system thanks to Mitsubishi’s knowhow with the Lancer Evolution (RIP). Oh, and there’s even a 2.4-liter gasoline engine specially designed for the plug-in hybrid system which can act as a generator to achieve a high regeneration rate for the electric drivetrain.

These components are used together with Mitsubishi’s integrated vehicle behavior control system, Super All-Wheel Control (S-AWC), which improves dynamic performance when accelerating, cornering and stopping by controlling the braking force at each wheel and the front and rear motor output.

All in all, Mitsubishi says that the Engelberg Tourer has an EV cruising range of 70 kilometers while a fully-charged battery and full fuel tank can make it go 700 kilometers.

It’s highly unlikely that the Engelberg Tourer will see production in this wacky form. However, it may preview what’s in store for the next-generation Outlander PHEV SUV or even the all-new Pajero both of which are due for a full model change in the next few years.
