Volkswagen (Kind of) Admits: Stick Shifts Can Double as Anti-Theft Device

It was just going to be a matter of time: manual gearboxes can now be classified as an anti-theft device. Well, at least if you take a gander at this new ad from Volkswagen.

In Volkswagen’s newest ad for its high-performance Jetta GLI (think a sedan version of the Golf GTI), the Pure Gray colored Jetta is seen parked at a curb to which the passenger asks the driver, “Aren’t you going to lock the car?”

The driver then responds: “Nah it’s stick shift.”

Of course, being an ad from the U.S. of A, law suits can ensue, so a few seconds later, a disclaimer (in fine print) pops up: “Legally we have to tell you that you should always lock your car, so you should lock your car.”

Clearly, this new ad is cheeky and perhaps relies on people realizing this as an inside joke. It’s clever and funny, especially for the dying breed of individuals who still prefer to drive stick. However, it also poses a risk for people who may just glance at the ad and just can’t “get it.”

You can view the ad yourself below and see what you think.
