2020 Mitsubishi Montero Sport Embraces Futuristic Design with New Tech, Features

The current Mitsubishi Montero Sport is renowned primarily for its futuristic, out-of-this-world design. With the arrival of the refreshed 2020 model, Mitsubishi isn’t just fully embracing it design-wise, but is now adding cutting-edge tech to match the looks as well.

Making its market debut in Thailand, the new Montero Sport (Pajero Sport in Thailand) dons a stronger front-end design. While the makeover isn’t as visually dramatic as the Strada’s, it does gain some of the new familial themes seen of late.

Front and center is the Dynamic Shield grille, made more pronounced and angular than ever before thanks to a higher hood. The headlights retain their traditional positioning, but feature new lighting elements sandwiching a stronger front grille design. The front fog lamps and signal lamps are the ones that migrate from the trailing edge to the middle of the bumper, akin to the Strada. At the back, the divisive “red tear” LED taillights have been retained, but have been re-shaped, cut, and given a smoked hue to visually improve the flow. A more aggressive-looking rear spoiler, reworked license plate garnish, and new designs for the 18-inch alloy wheels complete the changes.

At first glance, the 2020 Montero Sport looks to remain largely unchanged. However, it’s managed to embrace its futuristic styling by employing an 8-inch TFT LCD instrument cluster. Replacing the traditional gauges, this multi-function display not only adds a strong high-tech vibe, but puts the Montero Sport as the first in its class to offer such a feature. Apart from this, it will offer a larger infotainment screen and for that, it necessitated a re-do of the center console; including new climate control buttons. It also has new soft-padded interior door trim and an AC outlet integrated in the second row.

In terms of convenience, the 2020 Montero Sport gets a power tailgate and the Mitsubishi Remote Control. Using a smartphone app, this will enable the vehicle to send notifications to the owner’s phone and can open and lock the car and tailgate for as long as the mobile phone is within Bluetooth range.

Underneath, the refreshed Montero Sport retains the 2.4-liter MIVEC diesel engine. While its outputs remain changed (181 horsepower and 430 Nm of torque), work has been done to improve its overall refinement. Mated to this engine is an 8-speed automatic. It also retains the Super Select 4WD-II system.

Already a safety leader in the mid-sized SUV segment, the Montero Sport now adds Lane Change Assist (LCA) and Rear Cross Traffic Alert (RCTA) to its multitude of driver assist features.

  1. Wow. Probably the only perfect SUV. The looks, specs, value for money (hopefully, as Misu vehicles are known for). This will catapult the Montero back to number 1 suv in the country.

    1. I believe the Fortuner will still be the number 1 SUV in the country due to infact the Montero Sport was already involved in a SUA issue and fewer people were buying it, most of them were already avoiding the nameplate as they better prefer the Fortuner, mu-X, Everest, Terra, and Trailblazer.

    2. People associate the SUA to the older model though the newer model did suffer at the start but sales quickly picked up after a year that currently hit as the #2 SUV bestseller. If priced right I don't see why it can't regain the #1 place.

  2. MMPC should seriously consider a 2WD GT trim, for those who want all the safety tech without needing the 4wd. I for one would be interested. The GLS Premium I feel is too lacking.

    1. I think they should add more features in the existing GLS Premium variant with the all safety tech of the GT variant rather than introducing a newer variant.

  7. The new MonteroSport is the new king of SUV. We had a new 2018Fortuner and still the worst ride comfort compared to MonteroSport.
