Mercedes-AMG's F1-Engined Project ONE Heads to Road Testing

Despite the economic slowdown brought upon by the coronavirus pandemic, Mercedes-AMG says its Project ONE hypercar is still a go. Their latest proof is that it has finally entered the next phase of development: dynamic testing.

Several pre-production models are now practicing their fast laps at the company’s own proving ground and technology center at Immendingen, Germany. Testing has thus now largely transferred from the test stands to concentrate more and more on test tracks. For the first time, the project leaders have also authorized testing of the comprehensively electrified and highly complex hybrid power unit with its full output of more than 1,000 horsepower.

Along with the dynamic test program and some refinements to the car’s drivability, development work is also focused on its active aerodynamics.

The Mercedes-AMG Project ONE is unique in that it adapts a complete Formula 1 drive unit for use on the road. It’s also designed to be driven in an all-electric mode which proves to be a tremendous challenge for the engineering team.

According to the German carmaker, the next step in this extensive program of testing and development is already clear: the performance of the Project ONE will shortly also be tested on the north loop of the Nürburgring.
