The All-New Land Rover Defender Has Arrived and You (Sadly) Have to Pay a Bit More to Get One

The wait is now over. After a seven-month pre-selling tease, Land Rover Philippines has announced the arrival of the all-new Defender. An icon re-imagined for the 21st century, the Defender is built for adventurous hearts and curious minds.

“For the Land Rover brand here in the Philippines, the new Defender is like the glue which cements the whole line up again and reinforces the brand image amongst the other 4x4 competitors. The Defender has such a strong following with a vibrant and very active Land Rover Club of the Philippines which has been operating for over 20 years. This is true testament to the strength of the Defender,” says Chris Ward, President of Coventry Motors Corporation, the exclusive distributor of Land Rover in the Philippines.

The purposeful design of the 2020 Defender is familiar, yet new. The new luxury 4x4 features an upright stance, Alpine light roof windows, side-hinged tailgate, and rear-mounted spare tire—design elements all found in the original.

Inside, structural elements and fixing usually hidden from view have been exposed. Innovative features include a dash-mounted gear shifter to accommodate an optional central front ‘jump seat’ just like early Land Rovers. User-friendly features include rubberized floor that’s easy to brush or wipe clean, an optional full-length folding fabric roof, and a 1,075-liter cargo space (2,380 liters with the second row folded).

Underpinning the 2020 Defender is Land Rover’s new D7x architecture. The aluminum monocoque construction is the stiffest body structure the brand has ever done—three times stiffer than traditional body-on-frame designs. It also has permanent all-wheel drive with a two-speed transfer box and a open-diff rear axle as standard. An Electronic Active Differential is an available option.

The new body architecture also provides ground clearance of 291 mm and world-class off-road geometry, giving the Defender 110 approach, breakover and departure angles of 38, 28 and 40 degrees (in Off Road height) respectively. Its maximum wading depth of 900 mm is supported by a new Wade program in the Terrain Response system, which ensures drivers can ford deep water with complete confidence.

Powering the Defender 110 P400 is a 3.0-liter 6-cylinder gasoline engine with a twin scroll turbocharger and a mild hybrid (MHEV) system. All in all, this engine makes 400 horsepower at 5,500-6,500 rpm and 550 Nm of torque at 2,000 rpm. The sole transmission is an 8-speed automatic.

Buyers will be able to personalize the new Defender in more ways than any previous Land Rover with four Editions. The Explorer, Adventure, Country, and Urban Editions give Defender a distinct character with a specially selected range of enhancements. The exclusive First Edition model features a unique specification and will be available throughout the first year of production.

Customers will also be able to opt for a new Satin Protective Film to make the exterior paintwork even more durable. The sustainable, solvent-free, and completely recyclable wrap helps protect against everything from car park scratches to bramble rash and will be available as a factory-fit option with Indus Silver, Gondwana Stone and Pangea Green colors, providing a unique contemporary finish as it protects the paintwork.

In addition to the Editions, the new Defender is available with the widest choice of individual accessories ever assembled for a new Land Rover, with everything from a Remote Control Electric Winch, Rooftop Tent, and Inflatable Waterproof Awnings to more conventional tow bar systems and roof racks.

The 2021 Land Rover Defender 110 is now available at the following prices. For reference, these are P 100,000 more than their original pre-selling price.
