Honda Abandons Cutesy Designs for Its Newest All-Electric SUV

Honda seems to be eschewing the cutesy and retro-inspired styling of its previous two EV concepts for its newest EV concept, the Honda SUV e:concept.

Shown to the public at Auto China, the Honda SUV e:concept is purely a design concept for now (i.e. it’s lacking in any mechanical details), but it is indicative of a future mass-production all-electric SUV destined for the world’s biggest car market.

Compared to Honda’s previous efforts, the Urban EV Concept (which spawned the Honda e) and the Sports EV Concept, the Honda SUV e:concept is decidedly more angular and angry. There are hints of Tesla here with its grille-less look though Honda’s trademark solid wing is present, though reduced to a mere chrome strip. The two-door body style is surely a flight of fancy at this point, but do expect Honda to at least offer hidden or flushed door handles similar to its HR-V and Honda e.

While light on mechanical specifics, the Honda SUV e:concept will debut the Japanese’s carmaker’s newest generation Honda SENSING technology. This time they say it’s omnidirectional which should offer a full 360-degree protection for the driver and passengers. Better yet, the technology might debut earlier.

The omnidirectional form of Honda SENSING has been achieved using a wider angle front camera and a 360-degree radar which enables the system to detect vehicles in the peripheral environment more accurately. Moreover, the system will provide driver assist in more complex driving situations.

Are you a fan of Honda’s new SUV concept?
