Meet MG's Newest Electrified Models: the 2021 MG5 EV and the MG HS PHEV

MG has reached a tipping point in their European expansion. The British carmaker owned by China’s SAIC Motor has announced that they expect 50 percent of their total sales volume in Western Europe to be electrified. Leading the charge, so to speak, are the MG5 EV and MG HS PHEV.

Joining the well-received MG ZS EV, the MG5 EV is a compact wagon that bucks the trend towards SUV-fication. Powering it is a zero emissions 156 horsepower electric motor. Underneath the practical body type is a 52.2 kWh battery enough for about 340 kilometers in range. MG says a full charge (from flat) can be achieved in about eight and a half hours using a fast charger.

Inside, the MG5 EV features a cavernous cargo hold (578 liters with the rear seats up, 1,456 liters with them down), ample leg and headroom, and features such as complete active and passive safety features.

Meanwhile, for those who can’t kick the internal combustion engine just yet, there’s the MG HS PHEV. An ideal car for larger families, it’s their compact SUV slotting above the RX5 in both size and positioning.

The HS PHEV features the largest logo MG has ever fitted to any of their cars, fitting only they’ve given it performance to match. It mates the turbocharged 1.5-liter 4-cylinder from the regular HS with a 122-horsepower electric motor bumping up its output to a combined 258 horsepower—that’s more than a turbocharged Forester. This engine is mated to a 10-speed automatic (6-speed for the conventional engine and 4-speed for the electronic drive unit).

MG says the HS PHEV will accelerate to 100 km/h in about 7 seconds, while still offering up to 51.4 kilometers in all electric range. Using a home-based Type 2 charger, it can be topped up in just 3 hours.

As with all other MG models, both the MG5 EV and the MG HS PHEV are priced very competitively. While it’s still not available for the Philippine market, in the UK, where they will be sold, the zero emissions version of the MG5 tops out at £26,995 (P 1.66 million~) while the priciest MG HS PHEV is at £32,492 (P 2 million~).

Would you want MG Philippines to bring these electrified models locally?

  1. It will be better if MG Philippines will import MG5 EV from Thailand
