This Plug-In Hybrid Chinese Sportscar Tried Copying a Chevrolet Corvette

No, Tobey, you don’t need new glasses. What you’re looking at isn’t a 1950s Chevrolet Corvette, but rather it’s the Songsan SS Dolphin.

Why it was named after one of the most intelligent creatures on planet earth is anyone’s guess but what’s sure is that Songsan just caused a stir at Auto China even if the automaker found itself displaying their wares outside the main halls.

If you need to see why, well just look at it. Songsan just tried its darnest to create the quintessential American sportscar based off a front-wheel drive platform, so the resulting SS Dolphin is oddly proportioned in many ways. But hey, at least it gets A for effort.

Laughable as the styling is, the SS Dolphin does pack a formidable punch. It crams a BYD-sourced plug-in hybrid powertrain in the engine bay. With that, the turbocharged 1.5-liter and electric motor combo puts out 315 horsepower and a Muscle Car-like 535 Nm of torque. The transmission is a 6-speed dual clutch automatic.

According to Songsan, the SS Dolphin can swim, sorry, sprint to 100 km/h in about 5.9 seconds, while its all electric range stands at an impressive 100 kilometers thanks to a 16-kWh battery pack.

Now, here’s the kicker. Despite being a rolling copyright infringement, the Songsan SS Dolphin ain’t cheap. The boutique carmaker is selling this at nearly P 4.2 million. Shocking.
