We Know Exactly How Much Each Personalized 2021 Mazda MX-5 Costs

When Mazda Philippines launched its Build Your Personal MX-5 program, they did so to coincide with the global launch of the 2021 MX-5. At the time, the carmaker could only give a price range with the final price dictated by the exact combination of exterior color, interior trim, transmission, and if you’re opting for the soft top, the canvas top color.

With 78 possible combinations, that’s a lot to dig through. However, luckily for those who want to participate in the program, we know exactly how much each combination costs.

Before getting there though, let’s reiterate first what’s new with the 2021 MX-5. It’s mostly carried over from the 2020 model year which means it gets the new corporate key fob design, emblems, and switchgear. In fact, the changes are just down to new exterior colors with Deep Crystal Blue replacing Eternal Blue, a new brake pad material that produces less dust, and high-gloss black 17-inch alloy wheels.

Now that we got that out of the way, let’s see how much the 2021 MX-5 will set you back:
  • Mazda MX-5 M/T Black Top w/ Black Fabric Interior – P 1,980,000
  • Mazda MX-5 M/T Black Top w/ Black Leather Interior – P 2,130,000
  • Mazda MX-5 M/T Red Top w/ Black Leather Interior – P 2,150,000
  • Mazda MX-5 M/T Black Top w/ Red Nappa Interior – P 2,180,000
  • Mazda MX-5 M/T Red Top w/ Red Nappa Interior – P 2,200,000
  • Mazda MX-5 A/T Black Top w/ Black Leather Interior – P 2,190,000
  • Mazda MX-5 A/T Black Top w/ Red Nappa Interior – P 2,230,000
  • Mazda MX-5 A/T Red Top w/ Red Nappa Interior – P 2,250,000
If you prefer the Retractable Fastback or RF model, this is how much they’ll cost:
  • Mazda MX-5 M/T RF w/ Black Leather Interior – P 2,290,000
  • Mazda MX-5 M/T RF w/ Red Nappa Interior – P 2,330,000
  • Mazda MX-5 A/T RF w/ Black Leather Interior – P 2,360,000
  • Mazda MX-5 A/T RF w/ Red Nappa Interior – P 2,390,000
  • Mazda MX-5 A/T Club Edition – P 2,690,000
Take note that these prices are for the standard colors of the MX-5. Opting for Mazda’s special premium colors will add P 16,800 and P 22,400 for Machine Gray and Soul Red Crystal respectively.

Based on this information, it’s clear how much of a premium Mazda charges for each upgrade. Take note that the math is pretty weird.

For the soft-top variants, Leather seats (along with Smart City Brake Support) adds P 150,000—the highest price jump. Going for the Red Top adds P 20,000 from the base Black Top, while going for the Red Nappa adds P 30,000 compared to the base Black Leather. The kicker? Going for both the Red Top and Red Nappa, and the price jumps to P 70,000—and that is with the M/T. Opting for the Red Top with Red Nappa on the A/T though, and the price difference goes down slightly to P 60,000.

It is the same with the MX-5 RF. There is a P 40,000 price difference between the Black Leather and Red Nappa Leather if you prefer stick, but that difference goes down to P 30,000 if you opt for the slush box.

We do not know for sure, but we think that weird price gap is because the MX-5 M/T has a Limited Slip Differential or LSD, while the A/T does not. The MX-5 RF M/T also has standard Bilstein shock absorbers which is omitted on the MX-5 RF A/T.

Regardless of the reason behind the price differences, it is clear that while there’s a degree of personalization involved, certain combinations are still not available; you can’t get the automatic gearbox with a fabric interior, for instance.

This may sound like a disappointment for some, but during the Build Your Personal MX-5 program’s launch, Mazda Philippines president Steven Tan did clear it up that certain configurations just aren’t available for the Philippine market. That said, they’re working closely with their Japanese counterparts to potentially increase the number of options for the Philippine market including the possibility of offering factory-optioned forged RAYS wheels.
