The 2021 Mazda CX-5 Diesel Now Has 200 Horsepower

Last August, Mazda updated its CX-5 for the North American market. The refresh primarily centers around its infotainment system with the compact SUV now benefitting from the second-generation Mazda Connect (also seen in the CX-30 and Mazda3). Now, Japan gets the very same updates but adds powertrain improvements to the mix as well.

Like its North American counterpart, the Japanese domestic model 2021 CX-5 now gets a 10.25-inch “floating” infotainment screen fitted with the Mazda Connect 2, an upgrade from the current 8-inch system.

Aside from that though, Mazda has also decided to upgrade its flagship Skyactiv-D 2.2-liter diesel. Tweaks and further refinement mean it now boasts of an even 200 horsepower (up 10 horsepower) at 4,000 rpm, with torque remaining the same. Apart from the added power, engineers have also tweaked the throttle pedal response making for better controllability.

Power outputs of the gasoline engines remain the same, but regardless of powertrain, Mazda has also refined the 6-speed Skyactiv-Drive automatic. Thanks to improved transmission control technology, the carmaker says it feels lighter and more responsive.

With the Philippines sourcing the CX-5 from neighboring Malaysia, it’ll probably take a while longer for these changes/upgrades to appear for local models. Regardless, it’s something the region can probably expect in the middle or late 2021.
