The All-New 2021 Chevrolet Tahoe and Suburban Can Do More Than 10 km/L

With Chevrolet Philippines confirming the arrival of its big boys—the all-new 2021 Tahoe and Suburban next year—there’s one feature we certainly hope they’ll bring in: the diesel engine. Why? Well, it’s just bagged the title of being the most fuel-efficient full-sized SUV.

When fitted with the 3.0-liter Duramax turbo diesel engine, the rear-wheel drive Tahoe’s official U.S. EPA fuel economy goes up to a combined city/highway figure of 10.20 km/L (24 MPG). In the city, it still manages a respectable 8.92 km/L (21 MPG), while on the highway, it goes all the way up to 11.90 km/L (28 MPG). For those who want four-wheel drive, the figures are 11.05 km/L (26 MPG) highway, 8.50 km/L city (20 MPG), and 9.35 km/L (22 MPG) combined.

Meanwhile, for the Tahoe’s bigger brother, the Suburban, the figures stand at 11.47 km/L (27 MPG) highway, 8.92 km/L (21 MPG) city, and 9.77 km/L (23 MPG) in two-wheel drive models; and 11.05 km/L (26 MPG) combined, 8.50 km/L (20 MPG) city, and 9.35 km/L (22 MPG) combined for four-wheel drive models.

The 3.0-liter Duramax used by the Tahoe and Suburban is the first diesel inline-6 for Chevrolet’s full-sized SUVs. First launched in the Silverado pickup truck it uses technologies to optimize fuel consumption and is integrated into the all-new vehicle architecture. For use in the SUV range, engineers enhanced its noise abatement and installed a new engine control module. The engine makes 277 horsepower and 624 Nm of torque. It’s paired to a 10-speed automatic transmission.

The Duramax diesel engine option joins the base 5.3-liter V8 and 6.2-liter V8 gasoline engines. In terms of pricing, it’s positioned squarely in the middle of the two gasoline engines.
